Resourcefulness is the great divider between excellence and mediocrity.

FTD Sucks

I normally don't use this blog as a means of public banter against any other person or organization, but Saturday FTD really put the screws to me, so I feel obliged to return the favor.

As many of you know, I divorced last year and my daughters (who I speak with every night) live in Nashville with their mother. So, I thought it would be nice to send them roses for Valentine's Day. Being very busy lately, I figured that I'd just use FTD.COM instead of having to research to find a local florist in Nashville to deliver the bouquet today.

Here's a copy of the email I received on Friday, confirming my order:

Order Number: FNB505XXX
Order Date: Friday 02/11/2005
Delivery On: Monday 02/14/2005
Delivery To: Daddy's Girls
  Residence
  2213 XXXXXX RD
  XXXXXXXXXX, TN 37XXX-XXXX
  USA
  615XXXXXX

Gift Message: From the first man that ever loved you. Happy
  Valentine's Day.  Love, Daddy.

12 Favrit Red/Wht w/Vase $48.99
F731

Service Charges: $11.99
---------------- ---------
Subtotal $60.98

Total Charge: $60.98
Credit Card Type:      VISA

Now, I get a call Saturday stating that the florist they sent the order to will not fulfill the order for that price - even though they are an FTD florist and I purchased the flowers from FTD.COM. What gives here? I felt like I was in the middle of a 'last minute shake down'. Since when is $60 not enough for a dozen MEDIUM stem (not even long stem) roses? How can local florists decide their own pricing when they join a network that advertises products at a set price?

Needless to say, I wasn't happy. Thankfully, my ever-resourceful mother came through and gave me the name and owner's name of a local florist in Nashville that took care of me and confirmed that FTD isn't worth the bother. Thank you mom and Garden Delights. I'm sure my little girls will be happy now.

Real Florists (local) all over North America apologize for the error in FTD's ways. It is always worth taking the time to find a local Real Florist, and in most cases it will even save you some cash.

yea.. I got burned hard by FTD. Not only was the delivery not on time, they had to sub for something I didn't order.. I might be a little less forgiving if they had at least given what I had ordered 1 day late.. but nope.. they were late AND subbed. FTD is rotten to the core. They didn't respond to ANY of my emails, and I was on hold for a total of 6 hours (in three calls) waiting to talk to a 'representative'. What a bunch of BS, I wish I had known to go local... it would've been worth the leg work.

Maybe I should start a defamation campaign against FTD.

Please visit the following web site: http://www.floristdetective.com/
It will provide you with info that can save you money when ordering flowers.
The main point is to always order flowers by contacting the florist directly, DO NOT USE, a corporate run web site, don't need to mention the names, we all know who they are.
please forward this on to as many people as you can, we need to educate the public, and put the money in the florist's pockets, the people who deserve it.

My wife's father passed away on March 30 in Nebraska and the funeral was April 2. My wife and one of her sisters were unable to attend. I ordered about $150 of flowers for the funeral. After the funeral had started, FTD called me and told me that they could not fulfill the order. It was real nice of them to screw up my father-in-law's funeral.

FTD has in the last 6 years never let me down and occasionally managed to
save me. Everyone has bad experiences with people, it happens.
THat would be similar to going to another operating system when windos crashed for he umpteenth time
now woulnd't it?

Everyone has their opinions on companies, and here is mine. People tend to not tell the stories about
what ftd gives out to the community, or how perhaps their sheer volume makes you a part of the
unfortunate minority.

Just a thought

I order lots of flowers, usually directly from local florists and have never had a delivery problem. But my sister's dog died suddenly so I sent her flowers the same day from FTD. They delivered a bouquet of dead or dying flowers. How ghastly to recognize the death of her beloved pet with dead flowers! My sister didn't want to hurt my feelings so she didn't tell me about the dead flowers but a month later my brother told me. I immediately contacted FTD who said that they could not refund my money, send a replacement bouquet or even give me their standard 15% of next order (as if there will be a next order) for complaints because I had waited too long to contact them. I explained the situation and they still did not do anything to make good on their "satisfaction guaranteed" promise. I will never use FTD again!

I am a florist and just wanted to let you know that not only do the national order gathering company's like FTD and 1-800FLowers rip-off the person ordering the flowers they also rip off the local shop they call to arrange and deliver the flowers. In addition to the $10 "processing fee" they skim 27% off the top. Leaving the local florist with all the work and only 73% of the cash. So many florist are now refusing to fill their orders that they have resorted to sending unarranged flowers though the mail. These flowers are often nearly dead by the time they get to their destination.

I am a proud FTD.Com employee, and I would just like to share a few words with you all. FTD has substitution policies in effect for certain holidays such as valentines day, and mothers day. It's not our fault that the customer does not pay attention to this online when they are ordering , or when a CSR explains the policy over the telephone order customers. We let the customer know at time of order that we are on an open order policy for the holiday, and the customer has the option at that point to go through with the order, or to cancel. We serve thousands of satisfied customers per year, and of course there are some unhappy customers as there are with all large companies. People need to remember that FTD.Com is a flower wiring service, we take the order and send it to a local FTD florist in the recipients area. (WE DO NOT FILL THE ORDER, OR DELIVER THE FLOWERS!) It's the responsability of our member florists to do that. If a customer is unhappy with the flowers, the fault is of nobody else but the florist. We are in the process of terminating the memeber florists that are jeapordizing our reputable name. To all of you customers that hate us because a negative experience with an FTD florist- I do apologize, we do statnd by our Guarantee as long as the problem is brought to out attention within a resonable amount of time. Once again, I am a proud employee of FTD and I stand by our Excellent reputaion!

You are NOT always better off by using a local florist. TOWNE FLORIST IN LUMBERTON NC SUCKS!!! I went to my local florist who contacted a FTD florist in the town of the funeral. My friend died on 5-30. I went to my local florist the next day and they placed a order with Towne Florist in Lumberton NC at 12:48 pm on the 31st. The memorial service was 6-2. There were no flowers at the church. I was invited back to the house, there were no flowers at the home. I contacted my local florist who in turn contacted Towne Florist who claimed the family didn't want flowers at the church. Needless to say the church as full of flowers. We had a memorial service 2 weeks later at my business for my friend. The sister of the widow, said that when she went back to the church, my flowers had been delivered. Towne Florist is sticking by their story and I know my story is right. FTD has such a big name, but they evidently don't do anything to DISHONEST FLORIST! Called the FTD sight and was told I would have to go back to the thief that stole my money. WHAT A JOKE!

lduncan,

You are always better off using a florist, even if you have a bad experience, at least it's a personal bad experience. FTD doesn't really know who you are or what you want, they are only a broker of flowers and only in it for the $$. The florist will always treat you better!

Friend of an FTD Victim said:

So my friend from work just ordered flowers for her mom for Mother's Day.  FTD messed up the order (or the florist that is used by FTD) and did not put the apartment number on the order.  SO, on Mother's Day, the order didn't arrive. When my friend called to check why the order hadn't been delivered FTD said they would deliver them on Monday, but they would be a different kind of bouquet.  Fine. Well they weren't delivered on Monday either.  The apartment number was again not added to the order.  They only offered her 40% off of the flowers.  She is trying to mend her relationship with her mother and this is devastating.  It sure didn't help the situation.  I know that FTD is ONLY a WIRING service, however they take the chance of having membered florists not be so reliable.  FTD is the one offering the service to the customers ordering. THIS IS WHY THEY SHOULD TAKE IT UP WITH THE ACTUAL FLORIST to get any money back or resolve a complaint.  Not refer the customer to the florist to get a refund.  FTD is offering a flower delivery service. They need to be sure the flowers are delivered when they say they will be delivered.  They have a 100% guarantee. They need to live up to that.   Not a 100% guarantee to whatever we feel like doing...and nothing more.  It really is the one offering the services responsibility to fix the problem. If a caterer uses a vendor to provide a certain food.  It is the caterers responsibility to know if it tastes good before offering to a customer, right? So FTD should up it's standards with which florists they use.   I think that they should give my friend a FULL refund, deliver a new set of flowers WITH an apology for the customer service and give her a coupon for use on a bouquet in the future.  If they want the money back from the florist, then they should fight that fight...NOT THE CUSTOMER!

All florist as in all business, they are in it for the money. Reading about how FTD rips off florists, FTD charges an amount of money for the arrangement plus a service fee. The service fee goes to FTD the rest of it goes to the florist. i can not see how this is ripping off florists. I have ordered many flowers from FTD and because I am able to read I have had no problem using their service and will continue to do so in the future. If you look up FTD on the BBB you will notice that anything that they have been submitted for the BBB has found in favor of FTD. There is obviously a reason why they have been around since the 1910.

I am a florist that has been in the industry for over 18 years and now have my own store.  The sad truth is that most people are now ordering so many flowers online instead of through a "real florist".  Instead it is easier to go to what we refer to as "order gathering companies."  FTD was designed as a resource for florists to use where we could join (an organization) to give us accessability to other florists to help get orders where they need to go.  Instead they decided to take the orders themselves and then the florists have to pay them a percentage to get the orders.  So really we're all getting screwed.  That is of course except for FTD, Teleflora and 1800 FLOWERS, (which is the abosolute worst.)  Your best bet is to look up a florist online and call them directly.  We can tell you exactly what we have, what we can get, and offer other options.  It is also cheaper because "order gathering" companies also charge high service fees that lead you to believe it is the delivery charge when in reality the delivery charge is figured into the price on the website.  These websites are great to see what an arrangment may look like or to give you ideas.  Write down the item number of what you like and then call a florist directly and we can also look up that item number.   I hope your next experience is a better one.  Good luck.

Pissed Rep said:

Hey, I am also a rep at an FTD Call center (however, due to some papers we had to sign saying we wouldnt do this, I had to leave the location out). I have been there for a while and at first it wasnt bad really and truly. What happened was a guy by the name of Michael Dorion came to power as the companies VP of operations and since then the company has gone to hell in a handbasket. Its all about the number and great lengths have been taken to ensure customer service is slowly disappearing. The requirement for a representative at this point in time is to have (by the end of the month) an average call time when taking an order of 7 minutes or less. This really isnt that hard considering the information needed. What sucks is that the same requirement when dealing with customer service issues is 5 minutes and 15 seconds. Pretty stupid huh? To anyone who orders from FTD.com, I agree with the girl Melissa, just ask for a supervisor right off, it’ll help you AND the rep better, cause if the rep is trying to help you as best as they can, and have to check with supervisors and such to get permission to do certain things they will help you but they get in trouble for taking too long. When you ask for the supervisor, they can send you over to the person in charge who has more rights to anything and everything more than the rep does, and it wont hurt thier times either so everyone wins (you can get more out of a supervisor is the point im making in the case of the consumer) To respond about the FTD in California, here is something I know that the girl may not have. The Arkansas center and the Oregon center have a program FTD runs called “Flowers All Hours” which they provide an answering service for the florist. Also keep in mind when florists are part of FTD (and Teleflora’s) services, they most of the time have some sort of designation that they are a part of that. If you combine the fact that is all they show, then you get this answering machine (which is suppose to act like they are from the shop’s location, ie Sacramento, California, etc) that might do it too as far as sounding like tey are in a call center in california. For those who feel a little more malicious when you have to deal with us, get the supervisors name (first and last, if you can) thier emails are all the same format and you can bug them all you want, for example if the persons name is John Smith, then the email is jsmith@ftdi.com, just use the first initial and last name. It would be so much fun for all of our supervisors to get harassing emails from spoofed emails and stuff, make our IT work on something for a change (laughing). Hope this helps guys!

After horrible experiences with FTD (flowers sent to my mother on mother's day arrived dead) I resolved to only use local florists in the future. When I went to my hometown florist's web site I noticed they are a member of the Teleflora network. I also found out the fabulous florist who did my wedding is also a member. Teleflora uses only local florists (they have members in every state) and in most instances will get your order delivered the very day you request it. If you don't know a local florist you can place an order at Teleflora.com and they will contact the florist. All flowers are delivered in vases, no boxes (the worst!) I have not been disappointed since.
