I installed IIS on my Windows XP Professional laptop this morning to begin code development for an upcoming project and received the error message “Unexpected error 0x8ffe2740 occurred” when I attempted to start the web services. After looking up the error code, I found KB article 816944 that states this is due to a conflict on the default web server port 80. After thinking for a moment, I recalled that Skype allows for making connections over port 80 as a fallback to the default port of 47781. Unckecking the option to use port 80 and restarting Skype fixed the IIS error when starting the web services.
So, now Skype has conflicted with Total Recorder and IIS. What next? Perhaps this application wasn't worthy of it's Top 5 award.

My chili recipe took the first place award today at the RiverLodge Chili Cook-Off. My trophy was a silver Bombay Company goblet thing. It's nice, but winning the cook-off was awarding enough. If you haven't tried the recipe, you really should. It's very good, if I do say so myself. :)

To Rinie Huijgen, the maker of Mobile Net Switch, thank you for producing a very exciting and helpful application! This is certainly going to be a nominee for my Best Software Picks of 2005! (See the 2004 list here)
Being a consultant who travels all the time - connecting to various customer, hotel and conference networks, there is no end to the frustration that I face with configuring my laptop system for connecting to these various networks. One network I have this printer, another I this one. What about proxy settings? What about IP protocols? The list goes on and on. How ever, with Mobile Net Switch, all these headaches go away with the click of a single button! How easy is that?!
The power and managability of this application is best experienced by downloading and installing the FREE, fully-functional, & non-expiring trial version. However, if you just want a glimpse of what it can do, visit the vendor's website to check out the screenshots . I'm sure you'll quickly see how simple this can make switching between various networks.

An accurate analysis of the performance and sizing of the hardware systems that support Microsoft® Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 is critical to the successful implementation of MOM 2005. This technical paper shares some of the knowledge gained from the performance and sizing testing for MOM 2005, and is presented in various scenarios.
The test results presented in this paper do not represent nor are they meant to define an absolute system configuration for any number of managed computers. Rather, use the findings in this paper and the MOM 2005 Management Sizer as a starting point to help you to determine the appropriate performance and sizing considerations for MOM 2005 in your specific environment.

OK, I had already commented that the footprint of this watch is larger than I'd like but today when I tried to button the cuffs to my oxford and realized that the watch was preventing the button to meet the hole - well, that decided it for me... TOO BULKY. As such, I'm going to put this puppy on eBay unless I can return it to the Microsoft Company Store for a refund.
So, I have a dual time zone face loaded on my watch. The neat thing about this is one or both time zones can be configured to 'Auto-set by the Network' - much like most cellular phones today. So, I have the larger dial set to auto-update and the smaller configured for my home time zone (GMT -6:00).

OK, so I got my new Smart Watch today and had it up and configured within 30 minutes or so. I've got the Fossil FX3001. Not quite a nice as the newer FX3005, but hey I got it for free using my MS Company Store dollars awarded with my MVP. So, I can't complain.
Initially, I have to say that I hate the strap and the face is a bit too bulky for me. However, I do love the service. After a quick activation (requires the activation code programmed into the watch and an a Microsoft Passport account), I was easily able to customize my watch with local news, weather, stock quotes, MSN Messenger, Outlook calendaring and more.
Already today this watch has reminded me of an important meeting with my VP of Professional Services and giving me my weather forecast when I needed it.
I'll post more as I discover new things with this exciting technology.
As part of the monthly security bulletin release cycle, Microsoft provides advance notification to our customers on the number of security updates being released and the products affected. This is intended to help our customers plan for the deployment of these security updates more effectively.
On 11 January 2005 the Microsoft Security Response Center is planning to release:
- 3 Microsoft Security Bulletins affecting Microsoft Windows. The greatest maximum severity rating for these security updates is Critical. These security updates may require a restart.
Although we do not anticipate any changes, the number of bulletins, products affected, restart information and severities are subject to change until released.
At this time no additional information on these bulletins such as details regarding severity or details regarding the vulnerability will be made available until 11 January 2005.

Now, upon first read you may say “so what!”, but think about it for a second... imagine after turning of your alarm clock in the morning - it automatically started downloading your local weather forecast, news items and horoscope. THEN, based on Microsoft text-to-speech technology it started reading you the recently downloaded content! That is cool stuff.
By the way, if Microsoft is reading this I'm filing the patent as I type. :)
