Maybe because I've already delivered 2 presentations and my expectations from learning "professional" stuff are overrated a bit.

What I expected to see on this course are:

different type of your behaviour depending on audience number - to deliver presentation to 10 and 1000 people;
the correct behaviour when you don't know the answer on question from audience;
analysing the most common mistakes;
the tricks which differs the best ever presenter from moderate one

Unfortunately, I hardly get answer to one of these questions. All what this course gives your is about HOW to prepare presentation - the steps of preparations. But there are nothing about reading it.

I'd recommend this AIM course for those who makes the first steps in *creating" presentation, not delivering it.

So, I suppose there must be another course "how to deliver presentation PROFESSIONALY" :)

Teddy Bear factor IS a "paradigm shift"

"The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them" (c) Albert Einstein

Discussing the recent post about "Teddy Bear factor" with my mate Basil, I realized that Teddy Bear factor reflects the Einstein idea.

We need the "paradigm shift" to solve our problem and "paradigm shift" applied when we try explain our code verbally to whoever stay next to us. As part of .NET 3.0, WF ships with Windows Vista and also runs on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP.
WF allows developers to create dynamic, transparent applications with true object reuse and composition. WF provides the tools and services .NET developers need to add rich workflow capabilities to their ASP.NET and Smart Client applications as well as Web and Windows services. With the ability to fully involve business users and IT Pros in the use and monitoring of an application, WF stands to single-handedly change the way .NET programs are written in the future. This course provides fast-paced exposure to WF to get you started today, and is also provides information on using WF with the Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) to build transparent services and smart clients tomorrow.
18-21 February 2008
Time:
9:00am - 5:00pm
Location:
Upper Ground, Cliftons,
440 Collins St, Melbourne
Investment:
$3100 +GST early bird rate applies for bookings received by 21 Dec 07. Experience programming in C# using Visual Studio .NET is required.
This course will not only help you understand the architecture and design principles underlying WF, but also teach you the most practical aspects of beginning to use WF today. You’ll learn how to use WF to create rich Human Workflow applications that truly involve the business user as well as how to create transparent, maintainable application code. Coverage will include how to create workflows using sequence and State-machine workflow models as well as how to extend WF with custom activities and services. This "something else" is rather tiny thing which may be missed easily.
If you look back to development or lead role your will see that the "product delivery" was the major area of responsibility. In consulting - it's absolutely the same, plus new "keeping the client happy" role :)
What does it mean for you?
Just forget about your technical readiness. No matter how you are good technically - it means nothing for client :) You need step above delivery into "meet client's expectations" position. It brings your to number communication between client's business holders to understand their needs and client's "massaging" (Chris I suppose it's your copyright) to rule the project into right direction. You are becoming responsible to deliver your promises on time and control that everything is done.
There is a number of other items which mostly depends on your charisma and communication skills helping your being proactive with client. Your need to be heard by the client, bringing the clear understanding of what's going on. Heroic silent coding is the thing you must never do as a consulter on-site.
mirror: Wining the client

"Crouch" start in SharePoint

Recently I was parked into the SharePoint 2007 project, which is overly customized. Luckily, it relates to WSS then to MOSS. After the first week spent in this project I understood that the SharePoint is the only application when you need to read the RTFM before starting it :) Because, despite how you good as developer it doesn't make any sense with gettin' into the SharePoint. All that specific stuff relates to understanding the SharePoint structure and how it works. Without this knowledge you will fail even with the simplest task.

So, the SharePoint architecture is the vital thing you need to know when you start in this area, but where to start from first? I've scrutinized the resources and found the next book very useful for SharePoints newbies

Amazon.com: Inside Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (Pro Developer) (Pro Developer): Books: Ted Pattison,Daniel Larson

ISBN: 0735623201
ISBN-13: 9780735623200

Book is really good, and describes all necessary aspects which are required for the quick start in SharePoint

Mirror: Crouch start in SharePoint

Moving to Canberra

The consulting position implies a lot of traveling. But sometimes your are required to be in other city for a long time, as it just happened to me. From October I will be parked with client in Canberra for the next 3 months.

Can't say that I'm very exited or very disappointed. There are several pros and cons.

From one side, I have never been there before and would like to live there for a short period of time to understand how city looks like. But, from other side, I really fed up with traveling. I can't remember that I stayed somewhere more than 2 weeks from the beginning of June. I'm moving each 2 weeks either between cities or between countries. It doesn't make me comfortable and happy, and what's worse - I start feeling myself a bit shitty after 4 months on road.

But, if to put away all that traveling crap, the engagement in Canberra is really interesting from the development perspective and really challengeable - all the latest MS technologies in a big web-based solution and that was a key fact which tended me to accept this :) (Damn, I start hating myself for this, because I noted that very often the techny side of me prevails over the reasonableness)

So, Canberra in on the way :)

WCF & WF Classes in Australia

Just want to make announces about forthcoming WCF & WF classes in Australia (Sydney/Melbourne) which will be hosted at Readify.

Juval Lowy’s Windows Communication Foundation MasterClass– Registrations close 21 September

Juval Lowy is returning to Australia by popular demand to deliver his best-of-breed WCF Master Class from 15-19 October 2007 in Sydney.
