A few weeks ago my wife complained that her Vista desktop was not responding to her typing or mouse clicks. Given the importance of the customer, I immediately sat down at the system to troubleshoot. It wasn’t completely hung, but extremely sluggish. For example, the mouse moved and when I clicked on the start button the start menu opened after about 30 seconds. I suspected that something was hogging the CPU and likely could have resolved the problem simply by logging off or rebooting, but knew that if I didn’t determine the root cause and address it, she’d likely be calling on my technical support services again in the near future. In any case, stooping to that kind of troubleshooting hack is beneath my dignity. I therefore set out to investigate.
My first step was to run Process Explorer to see which process was using the CPU.

Microsoft .NET 3.0 setup

Hogy a keze törjön le annak, aki a Microsoft Update-et összeállítja.
Szegény, öreg, sokak által emlegetett mamája!

Úgy adódott, hogy egy program kipróbálásához az XPSP2 EN gépemre fel kellett rakni a tárgyban szereplő dolgot (leánykori nevén WinFX-et).

A MU elég szűkszavúan megjegyezte:

A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed

Hosszas egerészés után a semmitmondó log file-ból arra következtettem, hogy valami WIC pampog és azért nem tud feltelepülni a dolog. Így találtam meg, hogy a következő file-t kell letöltenem és telepítenem. (érdekes, hogy ez a WinFX egy korabeli változatában van benne és a MU problémájára adott egyes szakértő tippekben van olyan workaround is, hogy uninstalláljuk valamennyi korábbi változatot, a bétákat is, erre még egy kassa programot is írtak).

wic_x86_enu.exe

ezek után a tárgy szépen(?) fel is ment a gépre. Megjegyzésem csupán annyi, hogy kb fél képernyőnyi semmitmondó setup frame mellett sokszor parancssoros ablakok kavarnak be, továbbá a végén megjegyzi a program írója, hogy a telepítés után célszerű a MU-t mégegyszer lefuttatni, hátha van vmi javítás. Hát volt.

Miért nem lehet az XP MU esetére úgy összeállítani a letöltendőket, hogy:

benne legyen a WIC
benne legyen a .NET 3.0
benne legyen a .NET 3.0 update-je

Mindössze 2 órámba került (120-150 euro/órával tartozik nekem a koma, aki felelős ezért a trehanciáért).

Végezetül egy kis russzicizmus a komának : "Igyi náhuj" (a kevés russzicizmus közül az egyik, ahol a hangsúly a második szó első szótagján van)!

Its GPL'd, built on .NET 2.0, does not require SQL Server 2005, works in a medium trust enviroment (that means that you hosted types can use it!) and has many other features which are listed here. The only two things that you'll need are:

IIS5 (or better) with .NET 2.0 installed.
One write enabled directory in the root of the wiki

If you need to see it in action, check out the .NET Tiers website. The guys over at .NET Tiers are also using this for their site.
This is definately something that can come in handy in the corporate world when you don't have something like SharePoint installed (which offers built in Wiki support).

Today we integrated Sapphire project (as well as a lot of other new features) into the Visual Studio Orcas mainline. Sapphire project goal was to replace old, IE-based designer by a new one that is based on FrontPage technologies. It is the same set of components that Microsoft Expression Web is based on.

Hogy egy ilyen apró "csicsa" elvigye a letöltések 11%-át, hihetetlen. Mi lehet a helyzet a nagyobb "csicsákkal"?

Turns out my icon was 70k, as I made it a wonderful high-quality "Vista" icon in an attempt to make things pleasant and everything for folks. Of course, I didn't noticed when it was taking up over 11% of my monthly bandwidth.

Java 6 Released

Microsoft Best Practices Analyzer Tools

Sometimes I think we get too caught up in "best practices" to remember that the folks that set "best practices" are sitting on a committee and not building and running servers for small businesses.

It'd be nice if there was some project inside (or outside) Microsoft to unify all "Best Practices" knowledge under one tool. Perhaps one of these tools is the beginning of that?
Two years ago, Microsoft released the well-thought-of SQL Server Best Practices Analzyer, in June the BizTalk Server Best Practices Analyzer, and in July one for Exchange.
Now it looks like the "Best Practices Engine" is being abstract into this project at CodePlex called the Microsoft Best Practice Analyzer (BPA) and I think it's just a fantastic idea. It appears to be a clean up of the ASP.NET Analyzer from June.

I really hope that this is the beginning of an integration into an "Enterprise Application Best Practices Analyzer," perhaps headed up by the Patterns and Practices team? I'd like one tool I can point to a system and say "is this cool?"

After a couple weeks of fixing all the issues our developer community has so diligently reported in the issue tracker, we are happy to announce the official release of Google Web Toolkit 1.2 today. As we mentioned when we released the 1.2 Release Candidate, you can now develop and debug with GWT on Mac OS X in addition to Linux and Windows. We are pretty proud of this particular feature because GWT is now about as "platform independent" as you can get: develop on Windows, Linux or Mac OS X and deploy to IE, Firefox, Safari and Opera on any platform, without any special cases in your code. (If you want a bit more detail about our implementation of Mac OS X support, our release nomenclature and other tidbits, this recent InfoQ interview may interest you.) We also have already talked about how much faster the 1.2 hosted mode debugging environment is. And it is. If you've ever found yourself dropping to the command line using only the GWT compiler because hosted mode was too slow, you really should check out 1.2. Refreshes in hosted mode are almost instantaneous, and hosted mode lets you actually debug your code, which is nice. And of course, there were a few (dozen) bug fixes in 1.2 RC and a few more in the 1.2 release. Good riddance. Since Ubuntu 6.10 was released less than a month ago, Windows Vista went RTM and dates for new Ubuntu 7.4 were announced today, I thought I’ll post a tutorial on how to create a single boot screen triple boot system with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Ubuntu Edgy Eft.

A triple boot system isn’t that much different from a dual boot, but since Windows Vista is using a new boot loader called winload it screws up with your typical GRUB installation. And it is pretty annoying going up and down through several boot menus to select your desired operating system. The key is the sequence in which you install the OSes. To give you a rough idea, check the screenshot.

ShinyPower - Really useful PowerShell help application

Ez jó.

When you get started with PowerShell you get overwelmed by the new command to learn. PowerShell has a built-in help command that gives you an overview of all available commands, and per command you can get help on it's exact syntax. You get something like:

But it is difficult to get a direct overview of what commands are there, and what they exactly do.
Tonight I stumbled into a great little tool on CodePlex that does give you the same help information in a simple Windows application: ShinyPower.

The good thing is that it reads its help information from PowerShell itself, so if you add new command-lets, they automatically show up in ShinyPower.
