The United States generates more malicious computer activity than any other country, and sophisticated hackers worldwide are banding together in highly efficient crime rings, according to a new report. Researchers at Cupertino-based Symantec Corp. also found that fierce competition in the criminal underworld is driving down prices for stolen financial information. Criminals may purchase verified credit card numbers for as little as $1, and they can buy a complete identity _ a date of birth and U.S....(read more)

Tools to scan for missing patches and insecure versions
One of the important tasks to help protect our computers from exploits and bugs is to update the applications. An up-to-date antivirus and anti-spyware will not always protect a user from attacks and infection if the system is not fully patched.
Even antivirus vendors recommend to user to always keep a patched systems and applications.

In its TechNet documents, Microsoft recommends the repeated use of SkipRearm. How many times is "multiple times"? My testing revealed that the answer is, well, indefinite.
• On a copy of Vista Ultimate that Microsoft released in New York City on Jan. 29, I found that changing SkipRearm from 0 to 1 allowed the command slmgr -rearm to postpone Vista's activation deadline eight separate times. After that, changing the 0 to 1 had no effect, preventing slmgr -rearm from moving the deadline. The use of slmgr -rearm 3 times, plus using SkipRearm 8 times would eliminate Vista's activation nag screens for about one year (12 periods of 30 days).
• On a copy of the upgrade version of Vista Home Premium that I bought in a retail store on Jan. 30, slmgr -rearm also worked 3 times and SkipRearm worked 8 times before losing their effect. This combination would, as with Vista Ultimate, permit a one-year use of Vista without nag screens appearing.
• On a copy of the full version of Vista Home Premium that I bought in a retail store on Mar. 14, SkipRearm had no effect on extending the use of slmgr -rearm at all. This suggests that Microsoft has slipstreamed a new version into stores, eliminating the SkipRearm feature in Vista Home. That could mean that changing the key from 0 to 1 will now work only in the business editions of Vista — Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate — so corporations can use the loophole.

“Delays in updating browsers can leave users vulnerable to attack.
But, in updating browsers–especially when a zero-day attack was in progress–Microsoft trailed Apple, Mozilla and Opera in providing fixes. On average, IE patches appeared ten days after the flaw was reported, while Opera, Mozilla and Safari browsers were patched, on average, in two, three, and five days, respectively.”

The rare no-patch Tuesday caught some security analysts and professionals trying to figure out how to spend their free time. "Relax, take a breath," suggested Minoo Hamilton, senior security researcher with patch management vendor nCircle Network Security Inc.

Its GPL'd, built on .NET 2.0, does not require SQL Server 2005, works in a medium trust enviroment (that means that you hosted types can use it!) and has many other features which are listed here. The only two things that you'll need are:
- IIS5 (or better) with .NET 2.0 installed.
- One write enabled directory in the root of the wiki
If you need to see it in action, check out the .NET Tiers website. The guys over at .NET Tiers are also using this for their site.
This is definately something that can come in handy in the corporate world when you don't have something like SharePoint installed (which offers built in Wiki support).

fireballrus writes with news of the release of ReactOS 0.3.1 — press release, changelog, download packages. ReactOS is "an open source effort to develop a quality operating system that is compatible with applications and drivers written for the Microsoft Windows NT family of operating systems (NT4, 2000, XP, 2003)." The press release notes: "Please don't forget this is an alpha-stage operating system, which means it is not suitable to replace your main OS. Also, this release is aimed to be run mostly in virtualizers / emulators (like QEmu, VMWare, Parallels, etc): because of the big amount of changes, our development team was not able to test/fix all problems which arise when running ReactOS on real hardware."

Fueled by the rapid expansion of broadband connectivity and increasing interest in online multimedia-rich applications, the growth of digital multimedia content has skyrocketed. Numerous applications related to entertainment, e-commerce, digital photos, music download, distance learning and mobile media are now widely used by businesses and consumers. This growth is driving new forms of interaction with images, speech, video, text and other forms of unstructured information. It is also compounding the need for more effective methods for searching, categorizing and organizing this information. Unfortunately, manual processing is costly, time consuming and inadequate, leading to incomplete and inconsistent results and poor performance. New technologies are clearly needed for creating new value by exploiting the growing archives of digital media assets and managing the high costs associated with cataloging digital media content.

A Calendar of Updates postja hívta fel a figyelmem erre a fontos, leginkább TS környezetben használható service update-re:
The User Profile Hive Cleanup service helps to ensure user sessions are completely terminated when a user logs off. System processes and applications occasionally maintain connections to registry keys in the user profile after a user logs off. In those cases the user session is prevented from completely ending. This can result in problems when using Roaming User Profiles in a server environment or when using locked profiles as implemented through the Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP.
On Windows 2000 you can benefit from this service if the application event log shows event id 1000 where the message text indicates that the profile is not unloading and that the error is "Access is denied". On Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 either event ids 1517 and 1524 indicate the same profile unload problem.
To accomplish this the service monitors for logged off users that still have registry hives loaded. When that happens the service determines which application have handles opened to the hives and releases them. It logs the application name and what registry keys were left open. After this the system finishes unloading the profile.

A while after the release of the new Jetstress 2007 (08.01.0038), Microsoft made a minor update to this storage performance testing tool, in order to correct some issues, as described in Hyungmin Lee blog: Jetstress 08.01.0075 has fixed a list of issues. Here are the links to download the new version (v.08.01.0075):
Overview
Use Jetstress to verify the performance and stability of a disk subsystem prior to putting an Exchange server into production. Jetstress helps verify disk performance by simulating Exchange disk Input/Output (I/O) load. Specifically, Jetstress simulates the Exchange database and log file loads produced by a specific number of users. You use Performance Monitor, Event Viewer, and ESEUTIL in conjunction with Jetstress to verify that your disk subsystem meets or exceeds the performance criteria you establish. After a successful completion of the Jetstress Disk Performance and Stress Tests in a non-production environment, you will have ensured that your Exchange disk subsystem is adequately sized (in terms of performance criteria you establish) for the user count and user profiles you have established. It is highly recommended that the Jetstress user read through the tool documentation before using the tool.
Note Jetstress is only supported when running with Exchange 2000, Exchange 2003, Exchange 2007 or newer versions of ESE.DLL. Also, due to this support limitation, Jetstress is only supported on Windows 2000 Server, Windows Server 2003, Advanced Server, Datacenter and newer Windows OS platforms (Windows NT 4.0 and older builds are not supported).

Alchemi - Plug & Play Desktop Grid Computing Alchemi is an open source software framework that allows you to painlessly aggregate the computing power of networked machines into a virtual supercomputer (desktop grid) and to develop applications to run on the grid. It has been designed with the primary goal of being easy to use without sacrificing power and flexibility. Alchemi includes: * The runtime machinery (Windows executables) to construct computational grids. * A .NET API and tools to develop .NET grid applications and grid-enable legacy applications.
