PSI: Personal Software Inspector

One more thing I should mention is this. Last week I found a very useful tool to keep your compter up-to-date with the latest patches and updates. Secunia has a free program which scans your computer for vulnerabilities in programs. It will tell you that you need to update a program. It's called: "PSI: Personal Software Inspector". It can be downloaded from the Secunia website.

There's also a version called CSI: Corporate Software Inspector for the corporate world. Or, if you want to do it the online way then you can use the OSI: Online Software Inspector. Unfortunately, for this you need Java installed.

New portal for Microsoft Malware Protection Center

Today Microsoft has a new portal for the Malware Protection Center. Looks very good. Shows you were to get updates for several products like OneCare, Defender and the latest product Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE). You can submit a virus example. Information about the MMPC. And important, you can learn about malware too.

Kaspersky Anti-virus boot CD

Kaspersky released a new Boot CD. If your computer is infected by a, or more virus(es) and you want to boot the computer from CD, then download the 120MB ISO-file from Kaspersky.
The Boot-CD is based on Gentoo Linux and will download the latest anti-virus updates.

You can download the rescue disk at the Kaspersky site.

Microsoft Security Advisory: Video ActiveX control could allow remote code execution

Microsoft has released a Microsoft security advisory about this issue for IT professionals. The security advisory contains additional security-related information. To view the security advisory, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

A workaround is available in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 972890.

Affected software are versions of Windows server 2003 and Windows XP, incl. the XP Pro x64 Edition.

Microsoft Security Essentials Beta available for download

If you’re interested in the Beta of Microsoft Security Essentials and you want to download it, then go to their web site MSE Beta. Better hurry because it seems it’s topped at 75,000 downloads.

Mary-Jo Foley had a chat with Alan Parker, General Manager of Microsoft’s Anti-Malware team, and based on that conversation it seems that MSE/Morro will be released as Beta on June 23rd. WGA validation seems to be required.

It's a bit quiet here, but it has a good reason. My wife and I are moving from Almere, Netherlands to Washington (State) in the USA. The last couple of weeks we were very busy with all the paperwork, red-tape and packing. Not that much though. Many (big) things were just given away to family or friends. Yesterday my wife left for the US and soon I hope to join her there. Then I have to look for a job on the other side of the pond...

In the meanwhile... be sure to check at least the Windows Update web site to check for the latest patches and updates. Check, check and double check. I'll be back shortly... and from the USA...

OneCare discontinued; new security solution at no costs June 2009

That’s some news from the Windows Live OneCare Team Blog, OneCare will be discontinued and a new security solution will be released at no costs in June 2009. Don’t know how the new product will look like, but OneCare has been running on all my PC’s and I really did like it.

“The new solution will deliver the same core protection against malware but will not include many of additional non-security features found in many other consumer security suites”, according the press release of yesterday.

Yesterday, at the Microsoft PDC 2008, Ray Ozzie announced in his keynote a new operating environment: Windows Azure, Microsoft’s “Windows in the cloud”. A new service based operating environment.

At the Windows Azure website it’s described as follows:

The Azure™ Services Platform (Azure) is an internet-scale cloud services platform hosted in Microsoft data centers, which provides an operating system and a set of developer services that can be used individually or together.

Azure reduces the need for up-front technology purchases, and it enables developers to quickly and easily create applications running in the cloud by using their existing skills with the Microsoft Visual Studio development environment and the Microsoft .NET Framework. In addition to managed code languages supported by .NET, Azure will support more programming languages and development environments in the near future.

October: National Cyber Security Awareness Month

Okay, I'm here in Holland. So, we don't really have a "national cyber security awareness month". But still... wherever you are, there should always be cyber security awareness and not only this month. There are always some basic steps to take like keep that firewall running, keep the Windows software updated and run only updated antivirus and spyware software.

"Scareware..."

We all know what software is, we have heard of "spyware", we have heard of "malware". But ever heard of "scareware"? Well, I didn't until I saw this article "Fighting the scourge of scareware" at the BBC News web site. You know... sometimes you get those pop-ups saying: "you're system is corrupt... buy our software...", while your computer is perfectly okay and the problem doesn't even exists. It's just a trick to get you to buy their products, their software.

The good new is that Microsoft, together with the Washington State's Attorney General, is doing something about it. They already filed a lawsuit against a company in Texas which tries to trick you to get you their Registry Cleaner XP software.

Together with this, according to the news article, Microsoft also filed five other lawsuits for programs like "Scan & Repair", "Antivirus 2009", "MalwareCore", "WinDefender", "XPDefender" and "WinSpywareProtect".

On August 12 Microsoft plans to release 12 security updates, which affect Microsoft Windows as well as Microsoft Office software. There will be 7 "critical" and 5 "important" updates.

Windows Search on Windows Update

Good news from the Windows Search team. In late July Windows Search 4.0 will be available on the Windows Update. For XP users available as "Optional" update and Windows Vista users will see it as a "Recommended" update.

Me, myself and I really do like this tool. Searches the hard drive and network drives pretty fast and within documents too.
