Bridging gaps, and finding my role

Warning: this post won't teach you anything technical. It's about how I see myself. That may be of interest to you, or it may not. If not, feel free to skip it knowing you're not missing anything else. One of the great problems of the world...

Refactris

This post is in lieu of writing a proper one, either on the generic maths operators which Marc Gravell has been hard at work on, or on C# 4 which I have a number of opinions about (no surprise there). I will write about both of those topics, but I really...

LINQ to Silliness: Generating a Mandelbrot with parallel potential

I've been writing about LINQ recently, and in particular I've written a small amount about Parallel LINQ . (Don't get excited - it's only about a page, just to mention it as a sort of "meta-provider" for LINQ.) I was wondering...

Yeehaa! Framework source code, here we come!

It's just been announced on Scott Guthrie's blog that Visual Studio 2008 will allow debugging into the source code for the .NET framework - at least for some areas. I've wanted this to happen for a long time, and blogged about it before now...

Announcement: Partnership with Iterative Training

I'm delighted to announce my association with Iterative Training , a new .NET training company in the UK. It's been founded by a colleague of mine and his girlfriend, and ran its first course earlier in the year - a WCF Master Class taught by...

Writing user interfaces

Some of you may know that I don't do a lot of user interface work. Well, in the last couple of weeks I've been doing little but user interface work. I thought it might be time to share a few reflections. Designers The designer in VS 2005 is actually...

Why hasn't Microsoft bought JetBrains yet?

For those of you who aren't aware, JetBrains is the company behind IntelliJ IDEA, the Java IDE which I've heard amazing things about (I've tried it a couple of times but never got into it - I think I need an expert sitting beside me to point...

New blog, new project

I've started a new blog, which I'll be sharing with a couple of colleagues. In brief, the idea is to try to do a "hobby" project as well as possible, the whole purpose being the learning experience. Rather than waffle on about it here, I'll just refer...

Unit tests rock, I suck, news at 11

I've just started looking at my Miscellaneous Utility Library again, after quite a while. I'm currently running Vista on my laptop, which means I can't run Visual Studio 2003 - so it's about time I updated the library to use generics and all that goodness...

PowerShell in Action

Every so often, I review books for publishers at various times before they hit the streets (anything from initial proposal to final review). The book I've been reviewing most recently is PowerShell in Action . (For those of you who didn't see the news...

Pedantry - how much is too much?

I'm a pedant, there's no doubt about it. I'm particularly pedantic when it comes to terminology in computing discussions - at least where I see value in being precise about what is meant. So, when discussing static constructors in a mailing list thread...

Visual Studio vs Eclipse

I often see people in newsgroups saying how wonderful Visual Studio is, and they often claim it's the "best IDE in the world". Strangely enough, most go silent when I ask how many other IDEs they've used for a significant amount of time. I'm not going...

Code formatter online

I've finally got round to doing it... the code I use for posting code for articles etc has now been transformed into a small ASP.NET app . It's based on a VB.NET article . I converted it from VB.NET to C# using Instant C# (which worked very well - just...
