Tech-Ed Summary

Everyone is talking about their Tech-Ed experiences so I thought I would rant in. I must say that my first Tech-Ed experience was awesome. A few highlights come to mind.

  • Managed to get to a couple of VSTS sessions which were great.
  • Networking with people who I had never met, rarely see and see all the time!
  • Watching the Devgarten flourish and deliver.
  • Presenting with Mitch.
  • Tech-Ed Party, Croatian restaurants and everything in-between!

All in all, it was a great experience and I am looking forward to the Gold Coast next year for Tech-Ed ‘07.

Professional Team System

Speaking of Jean Luc, get your hands on his (and co) Professional Team System book when you get a chance. Thouroghly recommended. It has been out for a while now and I know some of you out there were at the launch and had it signed and such. Grab it. It’s a good read.

I was lucky enough to contribute to this fine publication which was a great experience and seeing my name in a published tech book is a little weird and cool at the same time!

Nice work guys.

VSTS Content at Tech-Ed Oz 2006

As everyone pretty much knows, Tech-Ed is happening next week in Sydney and being my first TE (and presenting), I’m pretty excited! I am especially looking forward to the VSTS and TFS related content and as such, I thought I would collate it right here. Check it out.

DEV202:
Introducing Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Database ProfessionalsMichael Leworthy

DEV303:
Concurrent Development with Branching in Team Foundation Server
Mitch Denny

DEV306:
Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server: Step-by-Step Migration and Adoption PlanningEric Lee & David Lemphers

DEV309:
Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server - Applying Version Control, Work Item Tracking and Team Build to Your Software Development Project – Joe Sango &
Mitch Denny

DEV316:
Extending Team Foundation Server
Mitch Denny

DEV411:
VSTS Performance Tools
Nick Weinholt

WEB310:
ASP.NET: Creating High-Performance, Enterprise-Scale Web Applications Using Visual Studio 2005 Team System – Keith Smith

There will undoubtedly be more mentions through other presentations as it’s such a wide and diverse product, not to mention lots of cabana sessions centered around VSTS and TFS, so it should be a good VSTSFest.

March VSTSUG

Just a reminder to everyone that the March VSTSUG meeting is just under a fortnight away. Please register your attendance by dropping me a line and check out the VSTSUG website for more info.

We also now have confirmation on Jeff's session. Here are the details:

Title
Team Foundation Server Overview:
Abstract:
With the upcoming RTM release of Team Foundation Server, we have managed to bring in the Program Manager that was in charge of shipping this product-Jeff Beehler.  Jeff's hour long presentation will cover the features that make Team Foundation Server unique in the industry for doing team development such as it's integrated version control, work items/lists, collaboration, notifications, reporting and an automated build process but since Jeff real passion is in team dynamics we have asked him to also cover what where the processes and methods he employed to ship this product.

And just in case you you have missed Jeff's bio:

I’ve been the Lead Program Manager for VSTS for the past 2 ½ years. In this role, I coordinate the release activities for all of Team System including our upcoming release of Team Foundation Server. As a result I’m involved with each of the teams shipping VSTS, but most directly the team building the Team Foundation since this is the integration point for all of Team System. It’s exciting to see the excitement VSTS is generating both within Microsoft as well as the .NET development community. Before working on VSTS, I was a founding member of the Visual C++ team way back in the early 90’s (and even QuickC for Windows before that). I took some time off between working on VC++ and VSTS (a little over 7 years) to start a family, consult with ISVs on how to ship software, work for an Internet start up and teach 6th grade. I returned to Microsoft because I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be on the team that helped expand Visual Studio beyond ‘just’ writing code. It's been a great experience.

Big thanks go out to Chuck for organising Jeff's availability. Thanks Chuck!!!

Thanks all and I hope to see you on the 23rd.

I am very happy to announce that Jeff Beehler, lead program manager of VSTS will be one of our speakers for the evening. Exact content is being finalised so I will let everyone know when I have the details. Whatever it is, Jeff's the man so you know it's gonna be cool!

February VSTSUG Wrap

We had our Feb meeting earlier tonight and unfortunately our speaker Karl had to cancel his presentation at the last minute. The session rolled on quite well with the die hard VSTS community coming along and we had a good yak about all things Team Foundation Server RC, extensibility and I gave away most of my goodies!

Huge thanks to everyone who came tonight. You guys rock! I will do some follow up posts with the information we talked about regarding extensibility and power tools for VSTS.

I will also have details of our March meeting coming up shortly and it's going to be a biggin'!!!
