I cannot open Help files that require the Windows Help (WinHlp32.exe) program.

On computers that are running Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2008 R2, you may be unable to open Help files that require the Windows Help (WinHlp32.exe) program. This article contains information about a download that helps you fix this problem.

Microsoft stopped including the 32-bit Help file viewer in Windows releases beginning with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. To support customers who still rely on legacy .hlp files, the Microsoft Download Center provides WinHlp32.exe downloads for Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2008 R2.

Special note for Help content providers who ship .hlp files

Starting with the release of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, third-party software developers are no longer authorized to redistribute WinHlp32.exe with their programs. For more information, see the "More information for Help content providers who are shipping .hlp files" section.

Before joining Microsoft, Kennedy worked for Oracle Corp. for 17 years, holding various positions within Alliances and Channels, Field Sales, On Demand, and Enterprise Support.  Most recently, Kennedy was Oracle’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Alliances and Channels.  In this role, he reported to Oracle’s President, Charles Phillips, and led the organization that was responsible for the ongoing development and education of Oracle’s Alliances and Channel strategies and programs, partner revenue-generating initiatives, Oracle’s PartnerNetwork program, and the models for managing all of Oracle’s 20,000-plus Alliance and Channel partners.  Kennedy also held technical and sales positions at IBM Corp., where he worked before joining Oracle.

In a previous post I talked about the Disk2VHD file conversion tool. Here is an "Oh Golly Gee Darn" moment.

(This blog is G rated however the rediscovery rates stronger wording.)

Analysis:

There were really two problems with the disk I created. Both problems were fixable.

1. The VHD file was too large for use with Virtual PC 2007 which has an IDE drive size limit of 127 GB.

2. In creating the file I copied all of the partitions from the previous XP box. However in installing Windows 7, I only reformatted the OS drive and installed Windows 7 v64. Therefore, the XP VHD contained all of the Data partitions as well as the OS partition. The actual hardware had the orginal data partitions as well as the new OS partition. When I attempted to mount the VHD in Windows 7 using the native support for VHD the drive signatures were the same and created a signature collision. However I could mount the VHD on different hardware without a problem.

Discussion:

The tool give no warning about the 127 GB file size limit Vrtual PC has for files. This is a big problem if you intend to boot from the created file. Big problem if you just used the tool to create your Virtual PC XPmode before going to Windows 7 64bit. So what can you do?

What to do if you created a VHD file larger than 127 GB as a backup of your PC before reformating.

First, I empathize with the situation and it is an easy trap to fall in to. You say to yourself, it worked for smaller sized drives so there was no reason to doubt it would work with larger drives. The example on the Disk2VHD page even uses a larger native drive but has less used space than 127 GB. So one day the example file will stop working if it grows beyond 127 GB. That is a pretty lame problem.

So what can you do? Hyper-V can use larger VHD files. And so can Windows 7. In part the solution is that you can mount your VHD file in Windows 7 and then rerun the tool to copy out individual drives to individual files. My post on Native support for VHD files will come in handy for you on this.

What to do if your VHD has "signature collision" with the "host computer" when trying to mount drives using native support for VHDs in Windows 7 or Windows 2008 R2.

It is important to understand what is happenning in order ot understand how to solve the problem. In my case I had created a perfect copy of the drives on the physical computer using Disk2vhd. Then I deleted only one of the disk partitions (The OS Disk). When I reinstalled the OS in the partition I reformatted I now had a new OS with the old partitions. I also had the VHD which included the old OS partition as well as an exact copy of the physical partiitions I had on the host OS.

So when I went to mount the partitions in the VHD file, the OS recognized the the disk signatures as being identical in the VHD as on the host system.

The fix: Mount the VHD on another Windows 7 box as read only and run Disk2VHD again breaking out the partitions as individual files.

So you want to run a quick check to see if your hardware has the best requirements to be used for Virtualization?

The Hardware-assisted virtualization (HAV) detection tool checks if the computer processor supports HAV and if this setting is enabled.

Supported Operating Systems

The HAV detection tool ONLY supports the following operating systems and editions/versions:

Windows Vista Service Pack 1, 2 (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, Ultimate)

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (Professional), Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Professional)

Windows 7 (Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise, Ultimate).

Collecting Data

With your *explicit approval*, system configuration data collected by the HAV detection tool will be sent to Microsoft.

Command line options

Copy havdetectiontool.exe to a local folder (say c:\HAVTool)
From an elevated command prompt, run the following command to extract the files:
c:\havtool\havdetectiontool.exe /x

This displays a prompt to choose the directory for the extracting the files.

Choose to extract the files to c:\HAVTool
Help Options:
To display the errorlevels returned by this tool, run one of the following commands from an elevated command prompt based on your OS architecture (from the extracted folder as described above):

c:\HAVTool\sources\i386\havtool.exe?

or

c:\HAVTool\sources\amd64\havtool.exe /?

Quiet Mode:

Create a script which executes the tool in quite mode - a snippet is shown below:

64 bit:

In a previous post I described what is popularly know as Windows 7 Godmode. Some administrators like to find shortcuts that make their life easier and so leveraging the functions of "GodMode" this post talks about how to create shortcuts to common administrative tasks.

In this example I will show you how to create a shortcut to the "View Network Connections" windows, a commonly used administrative folder which has been isolated a bit in Windows 7.

1. Create a folder any where on your computer named :
   JeffLoucksAdministrativeFolder.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
   
2. Open the folder you just created.
3. In the search dialog in Windows Explorer type "View Network Connections"
   
4. Right click on the view network connections and click create shortcut.
5. A shortcut to the View network connections window will be created on your desktop.

When you double click on the View Network Connections Shortcut, the window opens directly. You can now use this technique for any of wizards you want to shortcut.

Over the years I have created a number of presentations and performed a number of architectural engagements where we have used various tools to track and establish performance baselines, determine constant expectations and build out formulas for scaling. Microsoft has new tools which help in the process.

The Windows Performance Analyzer (WPA) is a set of performance monitoring tools which can establish in-depth performance profiles of Microsoft Windows operating systems and applications. Although these tools cannot discover, quantify or otherwise adapt to your essential hardware flaws, they do allow you to understand the limits within a classification of hardware. This has always made it difficult to predict how your application will work on different hardware when scaling.

When using WPA, the xperf.exe program is primarily used for the following operations:

• Control tracing. You start and stop tracing sessions and specify the events that should be logged.
• Trace merging and enhancement. A kernel trace must be ”merged” on the machine on which it was taken before it can be processed by the tools or viewed on another machine. The merge operation adds meta-information from the target machine to the trace. Additionally, the merge operation can combine multiple traces.
• Trace processing. Xperf supports many dedicated analyzers, called actions. Actions produce reports about specific parts of the trace. For more information on actions please see the Actions section of this document.

IIS 7.5 has a new feature which many SMB and Hosting providers will recognize and appreciate. It really has universal appeal and some of you will have already found ways to improve responsiveness, The initial lag time it takes to spin up worker processes and application pools makes CRM, SharePoint, and a number of other Dynamics and office server products appear slow if they have been inactive usually 30 minutes. This is because the application pool recycles and sits in wait for the next request before it turns itself back on.

There have been a number of tools over the years specifically directed at fixing this lag for specific applications. CRM had one of these tools and it was adapted to SharePoint. However it took until now for the a solution to be built into the IIS environment. Since it is a part of the environment it will soon replace the custom tools we have seen for other applications.

FTP for IIS 7.0 removes the need to create Windows user accounts on the server to enable FTP publishing by allowing authentication using IIS Manager users and .NET Membership. FTP for IIS 7.0 also provides enhanced logging that records all FTP traffic to help track FTP activity and diagnose potential issues.
