How many of you have copied contents from File Shares only to find that you can still not find anything just not find it faster?

I will show with a few simple steps how to implement automatic tagging or in place tagging so you don’t have to wait for your next migration or force management to use s spreadsheet to identify every document by using Boolean search not just synonyms as part of your Term Set.

If you choose to only use the Enterprise Keyword Settings on every document library I will give you a script to enable this feature on every document library. If you choose to use your own site columns I will provide a script that will make your Content Type the primary and apply it to every document library, then show how to modify the search result refiners so that you can drill through your search results. After we've got our cheat-sheet to help us out, and think that some of those buzz words are actually business worthy, where do we go? We know that we can't continue running "business as usual" when times are changing by the second. One of the new enterprise platform solutions from Microsoft to help address these concerns is SharePoint 2010.

• Organizational Readiness
• IT Readiness
• End User Readiness
• Training Readiness

SharePoint Governance: Lessons from the Trenches

Jill Hannemann

Over the years, SharePoint has garnered something of a reputation for growing fast and virally throughout numerous organizations. This can be useful for some enterprise initiatives, yet popularity and fast growth can yield unpleasant surprises and long-term problems as well. We will cover the basic business reasons of why a development team may choose this approach, such as enterprise commodity offerings that provide sandboxed solutions but business requirements necessitate a need to:

· Make remote calls outside of the sandbox
· Work outside of the site collection
· Access the Page object

Cool Solutions with InfoPath 2010

Steven Mann

Steve demonstrates several solutions with InfoPath 2010 both with and without code-behind. Sub-topics include:
- Leveraging and Using Picture Buttons
- Populating Repeating Tables from SharePoint Lists
- Tracking Changes

Building a Solution Brick By Brick

Becky Isserman

In this session we will build site columns, content types, and list instances that we can deploy to a content type hub. We will then build an InfoPath Form and publish it to one of the content types that we create. We will then go into a Site Collection using this content type hub and automate the process using SharePoint Designer Workflows. Throughout the session we will discuss the various caveats and design options available when building this type of solution. By the end of the session users will be able to build their own solutions using the methods and the technologies discussed.

SharePoint for ASP.Net Developers

That's great and all, but where do I put my code?

Greg Hurlman

The market share for SharePoint has grown in leaps and bounds over the last few years, leading to many developers being told that they are now SharePoint developers. Developing for SharePoint is a strange new world; we will cover what’s new, what’s the same, the top things that every SharePoint developer should know, and a few things to make every new developer’s life easier.

For new SharePoint developers, it can be hard to know where all the hooks are for your code to run. Web parts are obvious enough, and layouts and master pages are familiar from regular ol' ASP.Net. But what about behind the scenes? What's possible? What's not? Where are the hidden gotchas?

Memory Management in SharePoint Development

Matthew Vignau

How to identify and minimize the impact of memory leaks. Further discussion on the design considerations necessary with SharePoint development.

Guys: Please provide a little more of a description

Agile, SCRUM and SharePoint

Michele Eichhorn

SharePoint is a great out of the box application. But, as we all know, our clients can come up with a multitude of functionality that they want that just isn't there. This leads to inevitable development projects; the number of which are only limited by their imagination.

Using an Agile Framework provides multiple opportunities to gauge the direction of a project and reassess your position through an iterative and incremental approach. While agile methodologies abound (Crystal Clear., Extreme Programming, Feature Driven Development, DSDM,etc.) our discussion will concentrate on the SCRUM Methodology. This methodology is characterized by short "sprints" where definitive acceptance criteria are captured. Most importantly, the project can be readjusted based on end of sprint feedback.

Professional SharePoint Dev: Cross Cutting Concerns

David Mann

TBD

Application Lifecycle Management in SharePoint 2010

Jeremy Thake

Jeremy Thake, Enterprise Architect at AvePoint Inc and SharePoint MVP, will explain the principles of Application Lifecycle Management in SharePoint 2010. The session will suit SharePoint Developers, Team Leaders, Architects and Development Managers to understand how to approach ALM with SharePoint.

The NothingButSharePoint.com Project ALM approach will be discussed in detail as a case study, which involves global distributed development teams and designers. The pros and cons of this approach will be compared to the others. Common problems with promoting from Dev to Staging to Production will be discussed in detail.

Setting up a SharePoint 2010 Continuous Integration process

Tony Testa

Continuous Integration (CI), in a nutshell, is a software practice where members of a team check in their work frequently resulting in multiple builds over the course of the day allowing for integration errors to be reported frequently. Although commonplace in most organizations today it has taken quite a while to make its way to SharePoint projects. With the development improvements in SharePoint/Visual Studio 2010 setting up CI for your SharePoint projects has never been easier. In this session I will briefly cover CI fundamentals/benefits and demonstrate how to setup a CI process for a SharePoint 2010 project using one of the many available toolsets.

Search Deep Dive: In the Movies

Bill Wolff

Enterprise and FAST Search are explored in detail. We start with installation and configuration of search service applications. Content sources, crawl rules, and schedules are defined. The crawled properties are explored and associated with managed properties that drive refiners and index queries. We investigate the search query language syntax using some free third party tools. Search centers are created and customized using built-in web parts.

Architecture: Fast Search Server 2010 for SharePoint

Carlos Valcarcel

With the new release of SharePoint comes a plethora of new features: linear scalability, support for more languages, better relevancy, and support for 100 million documents in total per farm just to name a few. Yet, Microsoft’s acquisition of Fast Search and Transfer in 2007 has changed where SharePoint enterprise search is going. After a brief overview of SharePoint 2010 we will look at Fast Search Server 2010, what its feature set looks like and the reasons for using it over SharePoint search.

Keys to Success with SharePoint Search

Mike Oryszak

Help users find what they are looking for! This session will provide an overview of the core features that make up the SharePoint Search stack along with best practices for configuring and maintaining search in your environment. By following the Keys to Success you will provide users maximum value and increase their productivity.

Migrating from 2007 to SharePoint 2010 - How to do it "Search First"

Natalya Voskresenskaya & Paul Olenick

Most of us have heard about the enhancements and power offered by SharePoint 2010 Enterprise Search, but many do not realize they can take advantage of it before upgrading their 2007/MOSS environment. In this session we will cover how to leverage Search for SharePoint 2010 and FAST Search for SharePoint today as part of your organizations roadmap to 2010. We'll demonstrate the integration of SharePoint 2007 and SharePoint Search 2010 from the end-user perspective and discuss the many benefits “Search First” offers to an organization and their users.

Happy Holiday’s

-Ivan

Technorati Tags: SharePoint Saturdays,#SPSPhilly

Don’t Miss the Future SharePoint Saturday Events

We are happy to announce that SharePoint Saturday is expanding and has 6 more events. Power View reports now support multiple views per report. The report pictured below contains a total of five views that you can see previews of to the left of the canvas. http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=28145

PowerPivot Gallery Preview Images - Power View now produces preview images in the PowerPivot Gallery, just like Excel workbooks. They are supported in all views of the PowerPivot Gallery (gallery, theater and carousel).

Export to Microsoft PowerPoint - Along with the ability to create reports with multiple views, you can also export your report to PowerPoint. These are not just static images. Power View reports inside PowerPoint are fully interactive

In addition, now that Power View reports support multiple views in a single report, when you click on a specific view of the report, Power View will launch with that view as the active view.

Storyboard - When you are presenting reports with multiple views in them, there is way to navigate the views in a report called storyboard. Just hover to preview any of the views and select the one you want to display.

Sorting - We are certain you saw this one coming, but Power View now supports sorting on all data regions. On tables and matrices, all you have to do is click on the column headers to sort. For charts, there is an area above the chart that we call the “floatie” that allows you to choose to sort the chart by a measure or its categories.

For charts that are displayed as multiples, you can sort those too. For multiples, sorting sorts the charts themselves by a subtotal, and of course, it’s just a click away via the floatie as well.

More Chart Features - Power View has added more functionality to charts. In particular, charts now support

• more than 20 series,
• multiple measures,
• and color (series) in scatter and bubble charts.

The chart below shows multiple measures in action, depicting the average win percentage of major league baseball both at home and on the road over a set of years.

In the next chart, you can see colors assigned on the scatterplot.

Of course, the feature works with legend highlighting as well. Select a market size from the legend and all of the points associated with that entry will be highlighted in the chart.

Chart Highlighting Enhancements - There is also significant change to the highlighting feature with charts. When your column and bar charts contain non additive data, Power View will now display the highlighted values with a thinner column that is overlaid on top of the previous values. This is done to make it possible to see the previous values, regardless of the highlighted values.

It also makes it possible to see cases where the selected item from another visual has no representation in the chart. For example, in the chart below, not only can we see how ExpressJet compares against the average of all carriers for flights delayed by carrier, but we also can see that ExpressJet did not operate any routes greater than 1,500 miles.

Number Formatting for Tables and Matrix - Power View now supports number formatting on both tables and matrix

Slicers Cross Filter Other Slicers - When you have multiple slicers on a view now, if you select an entry in one slicer, the other slicers in the view are filtered by it.

Per Data Region Filtering - Filtering improvements are available in RC0. Power View now supports filters on each data region. The picture below shows the chart region filter selected in the filter pane. If you want to switch to filtering the entire view, just hover over the grey “view” text and select it and you’ll be on your way to filtering the entire view

Measure Filters and Filter Restatement - There are two other new features in the filter pane depicted above as well. The filter pane now supports measure filters and will also restate your filters even when a specific filter is in its collapsed

Search in Filters - But we’re not done yet. Have a long list of categories that you don’t want to wade through, use the search feature.

Drag Your Data to the Canvas - You can now drag fields directly to the canvas from the model explorer. If you hover the field over the canvas, it will create a new table. If you hover the field over an existing visualization, it will add that field to the next logical location in the visualization.

Print it! - You can now print your current view. Print is “what you see is what you get”.

Support for DirectQuery mode - DirectQuery mode for Analysis Services tabular models allows you to keep your data in a SQL Server relational database and still get the benefits of interactive reporting with Power View. You can read all about direct query mode here.

Database Image Support - Power View now supports database images stored directly in the model.

Show Items with No Data - Often referred to as “outer join”, Power View now supports the ability to display items with no data. The table below shows this feature in action.

And just like everything else in Power View, this feature is just a click away in the field well.

Measures as Non-Measures - PowerView also supports the ability to treat measures as non-measures (i.e. as categories). To do this, you just go to the field well and choose the option on the field to “Do Not Summarize” as shown below.

Below is an example of a report showing the count of airline flights by minutes late. Minutes late is a measure in the table on the left. The table on the right is the same table with the “Do Not Summarize” feature turned on.

All New Canvas Look - We’ve changed the overall look of the canvas and many of the items that you can place on the canvas.
