My first introduction to InstallShield was in the summer of 1997 on InstallShield 3 which was then Stirling Software. I spent about 6 months teaching myself InstallScript while working on rewriting DoD install in IS 5.0.

I think my IS class was around Jan 1997. Robert Dickau was my instructor and yes, I still have my InstallShield Certified coffee cup. :-)

When you check for updates, follow the link to "InstallSHield Premier Files and Utilities". There you can find tools like the Repackager etc. and also the stand alone build engine which has been updated to SP1.

I'm sorry, but I'm only familiar with the InstallShield side of the history. I don't know much about the other companies that Macrovision acquired before InstallShield.

BTW I do know that there was a history before InstallShield Software Corp. but I didn't want to go too far back in time.

The fineprint that has been added to the bottom of Acresso's web pages probably gives the reason for the name change:

"Acresso Software and its products are not associated with Agresso software, the Agresso organization, or Unit 4 Agresso."

This company seems to change it's name as often as it releases product updates. Someone should open an online pool guessing when the next name change will be.

What's in a name?

InstallShield-That made sense, as it described the product.

Macrovision-Sort of made sense, it was a well established brand name that carried some clout.

Acresso-Made no sense, the word didn't seem to mean anything at all (and the logo did nothing to clarify the issue.

Flexera-Maybe we are now in the ERA or FLEXability (or something). I wonder if the new company will have the Flex or if their end-users will have to be able to flex (like bending forward)?

As of this writing, www.flexera.com is not on-line, but Acresso has purchased that domain name.

There is a second workaround in Advanced Installer: using Enhanced UI, an external UI implementation we provide to solve this exact kind of issues and to provide additional and updated controls to MSI installers.

We'll probably add a prompt for user to automatically turn on EUI when attempting to use hyperlinks. Stephan's duplicate dialog solution may be too cumbersome.

A WI5.0 launch condition would restrict the package for Windows 7 or higher. While at this point I doubt many developers want that, it could be a better solution in the future if W7 gains traction or WI5 gets redistributables for older platforms.

On the off chance that Microsoft ever actually downlevels this capability it would be nice if we could get them to announce a possible future property to establish a contract. Something like

VersionMsi >= "5.00" Or MsiHyperLinkSupport

What a mess. MSI should have had a hyperlink control since v1.0. The internet only became a big thing some 5 years before MSI was shipped.

Microsoft is shipping too few features far too late to be useful. Just go to an external UI and move on IMO.
