Senior Software Engineer – Product Infrastructure Team

Description

VMware’s Product Infrastructure Team (PIT) is looking for a strong software engineer to help design and implement features and infrastructure for use in packaging VMware’s Desktop products. The PIT-Package team is responsible for the installers, packaging, and OS integration for VMware's Desktop product lines as well as providing frameworks that are used by teams across the entire company to solve complex installer and packaging problems.

PIT is a group of engineers that work with a broad variety of technologies, programming languages and OS platforms to solve the problems faced by all of VMware's Desktop products. People on the team are very passionate about their work and are looking for similarly motivated and flexible software engineers.

Responsibilities

Invent, design, and implement novel features and enhancements for VMware's Desktop product installers.
Design and own key components of our infrastructure.
Support VMware product releases by maintaining packaging software on Windows, OS X, and Linux.
Develop flexible, reusable code that can be shared in multiple components across several operating systems.
Interact with other product teams, customer support organization and the release team.

Requirements

BS or MS in Engineering or CS and 5+ years of commercial software product development experience, or equivalent experience
Strong coding skills in C/C++.
Experience in a variety of technical areas.
Familiarity with Windows application programming (COM/Win32/MFC/ATL) or Linux application programming (gtk2).
Familiarity with packaging/installation technology (MSI for Windows, RPM/tar/apt for Linux).
Cross-platform (Linux, OS X, and Windows) experience desirable.
Experience with desktop integration (Windows shell or KDE/Gnome desktop) a plus.
Experience with scripting languages (vbscript/Perl/Python/shell) a plus.
Must be motivated, detail-oriented, have the ability to thrive in a team environment.
Very strong analytical skills, good judgment, passion for your work.
Good design skills and insight about usability.
Good teamwork and communication skills.
Ability to work under deadlines.

Senior Software Development Engineer (Installer)

Position Description
The Senior Software Engineer will develop installation modules for a complex J2EE-based product using an embedded Oracle database. Responsibilities include designing, developing and maintaining Installers in Windows and in various flavors of UNIX and will be involved in the design and analysis of other programs and systems that affect the installers, such as system configuration and the system build process. This position involves interacting with other engineers, communicating technical concepts and challenges and soliciting input from other development groups, as well as members of the Quality Assurance and Build teams, Product Management and other Engineering groups. Estimate resources required (time, equipment, other engineers) for own project tasks. Assist development manager in scheduling tasks for most effective project completion and resource usage.

Qualifications

A minimum of 2 years work experience in product installation using InstallShield Developer is required.
Good programming expertise in Java is required.
Experience in the installation and basic configuration of Oracle, SunOne, and Active Directory-based solutions is highly desirable
Familiarity with Windows & UNIX system administration, as it impacts installer tasks, is required.
Scripting skills in shell or Perl is required.
Skills in setup, administration and use of application servers such as Websphere or Weblogic is highly desirable
Bachelor’s degree required.
3-5 years experience with Installshield or Install Anywhere and Java.

Software Engineer/Senior Engineer– Installer

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Design and implement enhancements to the Installers for the Softricity's SoftGrid product set including the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server, the SoftGrid Client and the SoftGrid Sequencer.

· Author functional and design specifications describing Installer functionality and design.

· Design, implement and maintain Installers using InstallShield, MSI, C++ and scripting tools.

Apply expertise in the Installation of Enterprise Scale Applications to deliver installers for new products, product upgrades and product patches. Help address support for automated distribution of SoftGrid components.
Work with Product Design/Product Management to ensure that the Installer and other features supports key end-user product requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

· Expert knowledge using recent versions InstallShield and MSI to build product installers for enterprise software.

· Extensive knowledge in packaging of commercial software using InstallShield and InstallShield patch designer. Extensive knowledge in building and using InstallShield custom actions. Good knowledge of package distribution technologies on the market (e.g. SMS, Active Directory, Tivoli).

· Solid knowledge of software engineering processes for building enterprise scale, commercial applications is required.

· Strong knowledge of Windows 2000/Windows XP based development and Win32 API is required.

· Strong C++ knowledge is required.

· Exposure to Active Directory and SQL Server is strongly desired.

· Ability to work exceptionally effectively in a team environment is required.

· Good written and excellent verbal communication skills are required.

Education and Experience:

· At least two years of experience in software engineering, with significant experience in building installation programs is required.

· At least one year of experience in a software product development environment.

· BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent knowledge and experience is required.
