Windows Mobile 5.0 Presentation Now Available for Download

My presentation from last night's Club Pocket PC - Boston meeting, entitled "Windows Mobile 5.0 - What's New for Developers and Administrators", is now available for download at the BostonPocketPC.com web site. This Adobe Acrobat file contains the slides from the presentation.

For those who could not attend the meeting, I wish that there was a quick and easy way of capturing what is not in the slide deck. We did spend a lot of time browsing the object libraries in the new WindowsMobile namespace within the .NET Compact Framework 2.0. We also had a lot of really great questions and discussions, for which I should thank last night's attendees.

FYI - The Microsoft.WindowsMobile namespaces are compatible with .NET CF 1.0 too (but they do require Windows Mobile 5.0)

Robert,

Thanks for pointing this out. I think I was focused on the WM 5.0 aspect, and may have left this point out as a result.

Daniel,

Unlike traditional desktop PCs, the Windows Mobile OS is only made available through the hardware vendor that manufactured the device. The reason for this relates to the process of delivering a Windows Mobile device.

Once the "base OS" is delivered to a device manufacturer, the manufacturer provides customizations to the OS per device based upon device features and functionality. This can include special drivers, applications, etc. Once these customizations have been performed and tested, then the OS is approved by the hardware manufacturer for end-user delivery.

What does this all mean? In the end, it will be up to the manufacturer of your device to determine whether or not an upgrade to Windows Mobile 5.0 will be available. Thus far, the following manufacturers have announced upgrade plans:

- Dell, with their X50 and X50v series;
- HP, with the 3700 and 4700 series;
- Fujitsu-Siemens, with the LOOX 720 (I believe the model number is correct here).

Your best bet is always to check with the manufacturer.

Hope this helps clarify,
Don

from an HP engineer via HP Instant Support Professional Edition - active chat - discussing the 6300 series.

I'm am afraid as the iPAQ h6300 series has Pocket PC Phone Edition installed in it, it cannot be upgraded to Windows Mobile 5.0. HP will offer Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrades for the HP iPAQ hx2100, hx2400, hx2700 and hx4700 series of handhelds. These software upgrades are expected to be available this summer and can be purchased directly from HP. For further information please refer the link below:

http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/newsroom/press/2005/050510b.html

The 4700 series only supports wifi
2100 bluetooth, 2700 wifi, 2400 wifi and bluetooth

So how on earth is exchange SP2 going to send an SMS kill command to these devices?

Tony,

The sad answer is "it's not" :-( It becomes another in a long history of "Pocket PC/Windows Mobile ODM x not supporting an OS upgrade to y". Unfortunately, I am guessing that the eventual answer from HP in this case will be to upgrade to newer hardware.

The response that the 6300 series not being upgradeable because it already has the Phone Edition OS isn't entirely true. Using that line of logic, there would never be such a thing as an upgrade now, would there ;-) I am more inclined to believe that the 6300 series may not meet some of the requirements for WM 5, among them the minimum ROM.

Chris,

There is no way to simply download a copy of Windows Mobile 5.0 and install it on your device. If an upgrade does become available, it would only happen through the carrier or (less likely in this case) directly from the manufacturer.

I might suggest reading a post that I made here almost one year ago entitled ""Why No Windows Mobile Upgrade: A Complex Answer to a Simple Question" (http://msmvps.com/donscf/archive/2004/09/14/13512.aspx). This should help provide a bit more detail on the subject.
