&lt;p&gt;The above link is to all those scared to death of uninstalling norton. I suggest unintalling it if you are having issues, TURN ON Window Firewall since norton turns it &amp;#39;off&amp;#39; supposedly c.c. After you have windows firewall on for SOME protection (either that or disable the internet for a bit)USE the Norton Removal Tool. IF YOU GET the damaged device showing up in Device manager than read the posts at the link ABOVE, it provides some nice working out of this issue. Seems if you &amp;#39;damage&amp;#39; this device by uninstalling NIS you can repair it.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;and to think all this started when i was trying to find a way to make my Freelancer game work on windows vista. I guess some internet protocols are preventing me from connecting to servers online. Who woulda thought a MICROSOFT game would have issues... and no patches...&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Open Device Manager of Vista and see if Microsoft Tunnel Interface Driver &amp;nbsp;device driver is damaged/missing. If so, you'll see a yellow icon for Microsoft Tunnel Interface Driver.&lt;/p&gt;
