re: Microsoft updated Sasser Worm Removal Tool (KB841720)
This is what the log will look like (if the system is clean) after running Microsoft Sasser Removal tool:
Microsoft Sasser removal tool (build 1.159) started on Thu May 13 12:56:31 2004
Checking 40 processes.
Checking startup registry keys for current user.
Checking keys for 7 other users
Checking known Sasser filenames.
**** No Sasser infection found ****
Microsoft Sasser removal tool stopped on Thu May 13 12:56:32 2004
The log file is named sasscln.log and located in %WINDIR%\debug folder
I hope majority of the computers are clean :-)

re: Another security tool? Anti-phishing tool
There are two I know.
One is SpoofStick from US (
http://www.corestreet.com/spoofstick/
), and the other is IpGuardian from Australia (
http://www.soft-trek.com.au/prjIpGuardian.asp
). Both are IE plugins, but IpGuardian seemed to be more configurable and has more features (like guard against ads as well,a simple/strict mode, etc). Both are free to try.
Hope this helps
P/S SpoofStick also supports FireFox now.

re: W32.Blackmal.B@mm - Category 2 level threat
Hi sameer,
Have you tried using the W32.Blackmal.B@mm removal tool created by Symantec? It's located in
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blackmal.b@mm.removal.tool.html
Symantec noted the following in using the removal tool:
The fixtool needs to be run within about 1.5 minutes of the worm's execution. If it is not, the worm will lock the keyboard and mouse.
If this happens, restart the computer and immediately run the tool. This applies only in the case of stand-alone systems. The behavior has not been tested for the remote deployment of tools.
If you are running Windows Me or Windows XP, it is recommended to disable System Restore.
Note: The removal procedure may not be successful if Windows Me/XP System Restore is not disabled, because Windows prevents outside programs from modifying System Restore.

re: W32.Blackmal.B@mm - Category 2 level threat
Sameer,
If the Symantecs' W32.Blackmal.B@mm removal tool can't get rid of this worm, try this running the removal tool in Safe mode or manually end the processes prior running the removal by opening Task Manager>Process tab.

re: Cyber-loafing boss sacks office spyware detective
There seems to be some very important details omitted from your story. First
of all, any employee utilizing DOT computers, according to computer usage
policy, consent to potential monitoring and have no right to personal
privacy. Secondly, Mr. Blake had administrator privileges with a
responsibility to "confirm and document the misuse of computer resources."
Just wanted to set the record straight.

re: Cyber-loafing boss sacks office spyware detective
In this case, Mr. Blake was not only doing his job as a Network Administrator, he was following Alabama Governor Riley’s edict to make Alabama “the most accountable, most cost-effective and most efficient state government in the nation.” Mr. Blake should be rewarded for trying to make this a successful reality. Governor Riley should be supporting Mr. Blake, if indeed he spoke truthfully about his plan for Alabama. And, to further show his serious intent to make Alabama more accountable, he should hire Mr. Blake to head up a “Waste Finder Task Force” for Alabama. The money that people like George Dobbs cost the taxpayers of Alabama could easily pay for such a department and still save Alabamians money.

re: Two Vulnerabilities in Mozilla may lead to remote compromise
Allow me to say more: the person reporting this bug seems to believe that all Firefox profile directories, for all users, are named "default.nop". In fact, the ".nop" suffix is randomized "salt". So the blind attacker can't know the path to an arbitrary user's cache files.
There are other flaws in the bug report that undermine the claim, but this will do for now.

re: Two Vulnerabilities in Mozilla may lead to remote compromise
Hi Brendan,
http://seclists.org/lists/bugtraq/2004/Jul/0127.html
Reading the bugtraq discussions seems that the #2 is confirmed that there's a bug and Mr. Dan Veditz (Mozilla Security Group) wrote it will be fixed.
BTW, you wrote "Please don't spread falsehoods." - that's not intended for me right? I hope so because am not spreading falsehoods or no one is spreading. Even the person who discovered a bug doesn't deserve this words since s/he is only reporting what he found. What matters only is the way s/he reported it. The proper way (AFAIK) is notify the vendor before spreading the word. I'm simply posting what was reported which I usually do with all other vulnerabilities reports that I will find. Link to source is provided so it doesn't make sense to write "Please don't spread falsehoods." over here.
Anyway, thanks for the feedback. Looks like the reported vulnerabilities or bug is being handled already by a member of Mozilla Security Group which is good because I'm also using Firefox, Mozilla & Thunderbird in addition to my Opera & IE.

re: Two Vulnerabilities in Mozilla may lead to remote compromise
Update: New reports have stated that the Mozilla Browser is not vulnerable to the first issue as it uses random names for cache directories. This issue does however affect Firefox. It is also reported that an attacker does not have to use a file extension for the second vulnerability as long as a NULL byte is placed after the file name. Arbitrary extensions may be applied as well.

re: Microsoft to enforce Sender ID checks
One problem from my viewpoint. hotmail.com, msn.com and microsoft.com don't yet have the SPF TXT records setup in their own DNS.

For example, mine, much simpler than Microsofts of course, are at

re: Microsoft updated Sasser Worm Removal Tool (KB841720)
The Supported Operating Systems to run the above tool are Windows 2000, & Windows XP.
If you are using an Operating System other than the above-mentioed OS, try using Symantec's removal tool (follow the instructions provided by Symantec on how to use the tool) -
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sasser.removal.tool.html
But before you begin:
If you are running Windows 2000 or XP, and have not yet done so, you must patch for the vulnerability described in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-011. If you do not, it is likely that your computer will continue to be reinfected. -
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS04-011.mspx
Read full details on how to remove Sasser Worm -

re: Microsoft to enforce Sender ID checks
It's like microsoft is imposing its own standard on the industry that wont help the industry to tackel with the problem.Whats the need of such a clone standard of SPF. Meng Wong, whats about the SPF clients, u did'nt take care of them while giving backward compatibilty in Sender ID for SPF. This issue need to be resolved first.

Hi Mr Dzung,
If the removal tools didn't help, try to disinfect the your system manually. Follow the manual removal in
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sasser.worm.html
You will need to end the malicious process, disable System Restore, run a scan using your up-to-date antivirus program or go for online scan using Housecall (
http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
), delete the registry entry (see Symantec link for the registry information).

re: W32.Lovgate.R@mm - Category 2 level threat
Hi,
Use the W32.HLLW.Lovgate Removal Tool. You can get it from
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.hllw.lovgate.removal.tool.html
After using the tool, reboot the system. Scan the system using the removal tool again or run an online scan using Housecall -
http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
Once the system is clean and if you are using Windows ME or XP, DO NOT use System Restore or else you will be restoring the infected file. You can disable System Restore if you want to trash any infected file.
To disable System Restore in Windows ME
Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
Double-click the System icon. If the System icon is not visible, click "View all Control Panel options" to display it.
On the Performance tab click File System.
Click the Troubleshooting tab, and then check Disable System Restore as shown in this illustration.
Click OK. Click Yes, when you are prompted to restart Windows.
To disable System Restore in Windows XP
Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box.
Click Apply. Click Yes, when you are prompted if you want to turn off System Restore. Click OK. Restart the computer
Reboot when done. Confirm your work by running another scan.
Enable System Restore again.
You can buy Norton Internet Security (with Norton Antivirus as bundled) to continue using it. Or use a freeware antivirus that offers real-time protection. Choose any of these:
Antivir -
http://www.free-av.com/
AVG -
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php
Avast -

re: Spamologist using different tactic in fighting spam.
Yes, the Confirmation System is not new. It's being used by Kaspersky AV (if not mistaken), other e-commerce (ordering) online, even board software and others online services is using confirmation system before one can register but I find this cool that "it is with an anti-spam program" this time. Not bad feature in addition to filter (on/offline).
I haven't try Spamologist myself but I find as another cool tactic in fighting spam.

re: Browser Hijackers Ruining Lives
I would like to send you some links to publications about my
criminal case. I worked for Mitsubishi Electric Automation in Vernon Hills, IL, USA.
My case are getting public attention now as an example of miscarriage
of justice. I could not defend myself, because I did not have enough
money for computer expert.
I was forced to confess for possession of child porn. I got browser
hijackers while browsing the web. I was redirected to illigal sites
against my will. Some illigal pictures were found on my hard drive only after
recovering in unallocated clusters, without dates of files
creation/download.
I do not know how can courts press widely on people to convict them,
while whole Internet is a mess.
This is my story in inquisition21.com. There is all information about case written by Irish writer Brian Rothery.

The same case overturned:
http://www.mnsun.com/story.asp?city=apple_valley&story=139174
The problem for me now is to find lawyer, who can review the case. When I pleaded guilty, there were no any publications, like in wired news. This article was posted on hundreds sites, published in newspapers, discussed on many boards, and translated to many languages.
I think the problem with my confession was prosecutors pushed case to trial without any thoughts about computer experts. Judge answered NO for any requests. Prosecutor promised couple years in prison. My lawyer came to me and said 'You must answer in next 5 minutes, after that they call jurors for trial'. 100% you will get conviction, no doubt.
100% to get conviction, and go to prison for couple years. This was opinion of very experienced lawyer. Going to prison with child sex conviction, there were possibilities to get raped, bitten, or even killed. These were real, very real.
So it was pressing like criminals pressing on victim. I am political refugee from Soviet Union, and in my understanding, there are no difference between prosecution, court, police and criminals. I got another prove of this.
So I need to find lawyer who wants to make a nose. If you know this kind lawyer, please let me know. People are silent in this country because charging with any crime is very easy, but defence costs huge money. Most people do not have $15,000 for lawyer, but this is not enough. I think $200,000 is not enough to defend yourself. So police and and procecution enjoy abusing of power, like masters with slaves.
I just tryed to explain why there was plea agreement. Some people do not understand this. They asking questions like why admitted something you are not guilty of. Josef Stalin victims admitted to any crime just to exchance for easy death. Also you probably read Orwell '1984'
Fima.

re: Destructive Mac virus spies on Apple users
Does it bother anyone in the press that none of the sensationalized articles about this have actually gotten the facts right?
The malware is NOT a virus, nor a trojan, nor a worm. It is a program, the program documentation clearly indicates what the program does and if you run it, it will in fact do what it says it does - how is this any different from say... Microsoft Word aside from the fact that while Word claims to be a word-processor, the script in question claims to be a rootkit. (And to my knowledge, both are exactly what they claim to be, with the possible exception of Word.)

re: Microsoft Threat Modeling Tool updated
Mr Swiderski,
I've just started working with your threat modeling
tool and have found it to be quite useful. However,
I'm missing a rather important detail.
When I'm performing a threat analysis of a system
I'll discover security functionality that needs to
be implemented by the system itself, i.e. Security
Enforcing Functions.
The only way to document these in your tool seems to
be as "Assumptions on implementation". I see these
"Security Enforcing Functions" as mitigations but
the tool does not allow me to do that. What is the
purpose of not being able to let the implementation
be a mitigating factor?
Or, am I possibly using the tool in a way I'm not supposed to?

NORTON ANTIVIRUS/INTERNET SECURITY 2004
Had this product since 2001 and each year added upgrade versions. Had minor problems over those years that, one way or the other, were able to resolved in a "reasonable" period of time. That is UNTIL THIS YEAR. For no particular reason, though I suspected a corrupted .exe or shared DLL file somewhere, the NIS (Norton Internet Security)feature would not enable. I went through their site procedures for tech assist, etc. and their customer store also and was referred back and forth to the point of abject frustration. I came upon a Catch22 situation wherein they had NOT changed my email address of record and whenever I tried to enter my current valid one (which I had notified them of previously) the page upon reloading would revert to the former invalid one. Their suggestions for dealing with the problem, utilizing their own step-by-step, interminally involved/complicated method was followed accurately and failed to resolve the problem. They then reccomended a file-by-file search and manual deletion to correct the problem. When this also failed they sent me a sorry letter and referred me back up on to their CUSTOMER SUPPORT MERRY_GO_ROUND!! It's at this point that one finds out that there is no way to contact them, when all else fails, unless you agree to pay AN EXHORBITANT SERVICE CHARGE.
BOTTOM LINE>>>Symantec is obviously another company that has gotten too big for it's corporate britches. They fail to realize that when you provide a paid for service to the public there is an inherent responsibility to provide an ADEQUATE AND EFFECTIVE FREE customer service base as a foundation.
RECCOMENDATION>>>Research many smaller antivirus providers by utilizing and working with free 'trial editions' of the
product..I did this with 4, 3 of which I had never heard of before, and settled on Sophos Antivirus, which once configured, appears to run quietly in the background with only minimal and necessary advice windows popping up. In this day and age it's NUTS to surf the 'net w/o an excellent antivirus/firewall setup on your PC. Simply enter "free antivirus trial editions" in the GOOGLE search box and you're on your way. Good Luck, Bob

re: Computer Security Scandal at America Online. With AOL, Hackers Operate Freely
Hi,
Try using the following:
Ad-aware SE -
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
Spybot-Search & Destroy -
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=mirrors
Update the programs prior running a scan.
Reboot after using the programs.
Next, download CWShredder from
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html
After installing it, run CWShredder.exe and let if fix what it finds.
Reboot when done.
If still have problem, run an online scan using Housecall -

If still not OK, download HijackThis from
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe
Where to put and how to use HijackThis:
It is important that you will run HijackThis.exe in its own folder so the backup files that HijackThis file will create will not be accidentally deleted.
Open 'My Computer', then double-click to open C:\ (or the drive letter that your Windows is installed)
In the menu bar, click File-->New-->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ or C:\HijackThis\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there, and double click to run it.
Click 'Scan' button. Click 'Save log' button. Save the 'hijackthis.log' in your desktop. Copy and paste the content of 'hijackthis.log' and post it in any forums that offer HijackThis analysis. You can find these forums at

re: WhenU Enters the Anti-Spyware Market; Aluria Software Gone Bad
It got worse today.
http://www.boston.com/business/technology/articles/2004/11/06/spyware_killer_displays_its_own_ads/
"In addition, WhenU will start distributing a free advertising-supported version of the Aluria software later this month. The program will wipe out other spyware programs but display its own advertisements. Aluria will receive a portion of the revenues WhenU receives for displaying the ads."
That's especially intersting because the eWeek article on Nov. 1 said this:
"Rich Mogull, a research director at analyst firm Gartner, expressed skepticism about the agreement as well, noting that the real concern would be whether money exchanged hands as part of the deal.
"Absolutely not," Aluria's Carlson said when asked if there was a financial agreement in place. "That would tear apart the core of our business."
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1706660,00.asp
So, Carlson is contradicting himself.
Then the icing on the cake:
"Software entrepreneur Rick Carlson thinks consumers will welcome free software for purging their computers of annoying "spyware" advertisements -- even if the free software includes ads of its own."
I posted about this on Aluria's forum.

I have a two part question?
Question 1.
I un-installed the my previous version of Lavasoft through add/remove programs. When I go into my Programs I still remains of lavasoft? Should I have remove the program with the unwise removal tool that lavasoft provides with their software.
Question 2.
Have you heard of or experienced any conflicts with Norton and this new version of Lavasoft's Ad-aware SE Personal? The reason I ask is because of a previous article I read elsewhere.
Thanks G.

Removing using Add/Remove Programs or its' own uninstaller should remove the entry in the list of Programs. If not, try installing the Ad-aware SE which should remove the old version.

Lycos download site seems to be down or attacked. I get a "page not found" message and

Screensaver site down
Ok. It seems the spammers are using another incorrect proceadure. Not satisfied with delivering unwamted messages, they have now apparently hacked into a site that is not theirs. It shows what these people are really like. They have introduced this "threat message" (see Chris's post).
OK big deal, go on and report me to who ever you like. Want my name and address too. Well seeing that you have taken the trouble to log the ISP's of all those who do not want to receive your rubbish, I trust you will use it to remove my computer from your lists.

You can still download the screensaver.
You can still download the screensaver.
FYI, I tried to download the screensaver and as is so often the case wasn't able to easily do so. Being a network tech I did what I usually do, that is I took Internet Explorer out of the equation by running my request through a proxy (proxomitron) which shows you exactly what is being requested in real time. Once the URL was revealed it was a simple task to request it again using another download utility (x-fileget). Using x-fileget (or any other download utility) there's a good chance that the download will be rapidly completed as it was for me. In any case the URL for downloading the screensaver is:
http://download.makelovenotspam.com/screensavers/MLNS_screensaver_en.exe
I don't know if the URL above is going to be broken into two lines or not (probably not) but if it is you'll need to copy and paste it into notepad and remove the carriage return so that the entire URL is on the same line before attempting to download it. Otherwise trying to paste it into whatever you're trying to download it with the URL will be cut off at the carriage return.
Note to the website admin: Your site is beautiful in my opinion. It's very nicely done but in some ways this is hindering people's ability to download your screensaver. Making the entire download page one big flash animation makes it nearly impossible to get the download URL for the majority of the planet who are not network engineers. This seems to me counter productive since the only thing that is making it difficult to download is the way your site is set up. I don't know why but I couldn't download it using Internet Explorer. Once I tried to download it with another program the download proceeded very quickly. It seems that someone has messed with your code making the download fail for whatever reason. if you simply posted the URL somewhere this would most likely not be the case which is why I included it above. I suggest to you that sometimes simplicity can be better than your present efforts. Make the download page in regular html so that people can right-click on the download link and obtain the download URL for your screensaver. Lots of people know how to do this and it'll make it a lot easier to accomplish your goal of putting these spamming fools out of commission. Also, if you'd really like to make the spread of your screensaver impossible to stop you've got to post it on as many mirror sites as possible. You could also encourage people to send it to their friends via email, etc. If you would like I can post it in some publically accessible location. I'll wait to hear back from you before I do so, of course. Let me know. I can be reached at spamturbation on the y a h o o . c om servers. You'll want to take the spaces out of course.
Ciao for now,
PJ

re: Lycos screensaver to blitz spam servers
Note:
This is additional comments to my post above.
Clicking on the link in my previous post using Internet Explorer will most likely not succeed (at least it hasn't for me). The progress window opens and the progress bar progresses to about 5% completed but stops there forever. I tried downloading it using Opera (another web browser) and it didn't seem to be working until all of a sudden the download was completed. Trying to download it using Mozilla's Firefox never got off the ground. A window was opened to show the download progress but it never even started. I don't know why this is happening but I can tell you that using x-fileget the download completed in about 10 seconds.
Xfileget can be downloaded by clicking on the link below:
http://www.filelibrary.com:8080/cgi-bin/freedownload/Windows/j/112/xfileget.zip
Note: I found the link above by going to the search engine at
http://www.ooodoggy.com/
and searching for:
xfileget.zip
If you have any trouble with the link above you can always do the same thing. There were other search results there that might work for you.
Once you have x-fileget, install then run it. Then come back to this page and right click on the link in my previous posting, choose Copy Link Location. You can then go back to the x-fileget window and click on the button with the + in it. That'll paste the link into x-fileget and the download should complete.
The obvious question one asks next is, "so where did the file download to?" Just FYI, unless you changed the settings it's in the same location you installed x-fileget to. If you don't know where this is you can find out by clicking on the settings button. It's the one next to the button with the "?" on it. If you hold your mouse over it you'll see "Settings" come up after a second or two. Click on that button and you'll see the download location at the top of the window.
Browse to that folder using Windows explorer. The file you're looking for is an executable file so to install the screensaver all you have to do is double click on the file named MLNS_screensaver_en.exe.
Oh and btw, it's been a number of hours since I first tried to download this screensaver. I tried to download it again using Internet Explorer and it succeeded this time with no problems. Whatever was the problem before appears to be time sensitive so if you have problems you can always try again later. It's 7pm locally (Pacific Time) and I expect that most people in Europe are sleeping now so the server load has lightened (download.makelovenotspam.com is registered to a company in Sweden). European traffic no doubt has some effect upon whether a download from a european server is successful so try downloading when it's the middle of the night in Europe if you have problems.
Good Luck One and All.

article. I'm not totally convinced. Henry claims that
hardware and OS diversity is required, but that vendor
diversity isn't. I think that is bull, and he is just
attempting to steer more traffic to his products. If you care about diversity, you care all they way up the stack, especially at the application layer.

Joanna,
You shouldn't let your antivirus program expire or leave outdated. Always keep it up-to-date to help protect your system from malware. Even if you will read or see any free protection anywhere in the internet, you shouldn't leave your PC unprotected. Read the discussion here and what I already posted. re: Microsoft Threat Modeling Tool updated
I also felt that security functionality that needs to be implemented by the system itself should be naturally expressed as a mitigating factor. Lately I ran into PTA Tools from www.ptatechnologies.com where they let you explicitly define the contribution of each countermeasure to the mitigation of a threat. I also found a very productive feature that let me mark those countermeasures that are already implemented and see their quantitative affect on reducing the system risk.
Hope this may help

re: Russian Hacker Team Behind Last Week's Web Attack
The gaming website I admin for was hit last week with a padonak.info object. Although at first glance it allowed the JavaByteVerify to enter. It also allowed a backdoor trojan to come in and infect any computer not well guard with an anti virus program/firewall. One person found it got around his Norton, router AND his Black Ice to try leaving a "Bloodhound .6 worm exploit. With another, it dropped in a "Trojan.Win32.Paketes"
The padonak.info object installs on the taskbar and if you clik on it, it will disable the ActiveX preventing the page from working properly. But it allows other nasty buggers to get in too.
I have been combing the web since this attack on Dec 22 and could not find anything under "padonak.info". Finally went to Wilders Secruity forums where a "padobot" and Russian "HangUp" hacker group were mentioned back in October. Then a Google search using the HangUp name.
Bingo......
Shot a bunch of reports off to the powers that control our website to inform them and get the site scrubbed clean of these.

What colour hats are they wearing?

From the other side of the coin: What a wonderful tool. Spaminator won't let email thru, but sends the sender an email letting the sender ask for permission. That's spam in reverse isn't it? What a total pain in the a$$. HIT THE DELETE BUTTON PEOPLE!

re: Programs that may behave differently in Windows XP Service Pack 2
Same problem here. Win XP SP2 installed, and all is fine when Corel boots up, but all submenu functions and secondary context menu (right-click) items are not accessible. They're not greyed out. They just don't slide out.
Keyboard shortcuts seem to work though.
Anyone find a solution to this??

re: Sophos reports 300% increase in Rolex watch spam
Pretty scummy way to market. It's one thing to rip off the trademark and another to ram yourself down someones email address.
The stuff I'm getting they want $ 250 for a imitation with no guarantee that it will arrive. Watch out for scratches because "even though the gold plate is very thick" we can't guarantee it won't scratch.
My advice is not to touch it.

re: Google's Bloggers helps in spreading spyware
The article you linked is biased. For all intents and purposes the title could read "Web sites help spread spyware"
The article insinuates that Google is responsible for the content its users put into their blogs.
Why didn't the author just come right and say that every Web host could spread software it allows its users to insert Javascript into Web pages?
So we stop users from using Javascript anywhere in a Web. Then what's next? We stop people from downloading software entirely ? Or do we make everybody register to use the net in the first place?
Free speech -- and freedom -- aregoing to hell in a handbasket really fast. . .
Educated Internet users are the answer to spyware. Not a veritable police state.

Google's Special Responsibility
I agree that the popups at issue could occur anywhere on the web. But as the operator of Blogspot, Google faces (I claim) a special responsibility in keeping its site clean. Users choose Google's Blogspot -- both as a place to post blogs, and as a place to read blogs -- with the expectation that Google's general quality and competence will make Blogspot a safe place. Google's own Software Principles document reinforces that expectation. So, to my mind, it's entirely reasonable to expect Google to do a bit of work to maintain the integrity of its community and of the content hosted within Google's control.
Take it to the next step: How would you feel about a page, hosted on Blogspot, that used an IE security flaw to install software on users' PCs with no consent at all? (See example of this occurring on certain web pages:
http://www.benedelman.org/news/111804-1.html
.) My claim is that these misleading installation attempts -- with their false claims that their "updates" are required, etc. -- are largely similar, and should be equally unwelcome on Google-hosted sites.

re: Captcha is here.. right here in MSMVPS.com blogs
Yeah, but from what I just read (search for it on Wiki) captcha's can be defeated by fooling humans on unrelated websites into doing the hard reverse Turing test for the spam operators. Implementing the new "rel" keyword by blog sites now sounds like a really good idea!

re: Microsoft Help ActiveX Control Related Topics Local Content Accessing Vulnerability
Need help re: ActiveX controls. Recently I have tried to do MS/ Windows ME security upgrades but error message " software update incomplete". When I follow the instructions, I remove some Windows update files and remove iuctl.dll and iuengine.dll and should be re-installing them from MS. However, I cannot find the download for these files. Still unable to upgrade security and don't have the 2 files back onto the computer. Please advise. J

re: Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool 1.2
Today, WindowsUpdate automatically installed KB890830 (malicious blablabla) onto my XPproSP2 system with Norton Antivirus 2004 installed (both in French). Immediately after, my firewall (ZoneAlarm Pro) alerted me that my system was no long protected against viruses. After checking, Norton auto-protect was disabled (without my permission, of course) and I was unable to reactivate it until I uninstalled NAV completely and reinstalled it from scratch. Are there other similar experiences?

re: Multiple AV Vendor Incorrect CRC32 Bypass Vulnerability
Symantec response on the above vulnerability report:
"Symantec engineers reviewed and tested the poster's proof-of-concept code. In all instances, Symantec was able to successfully decompress the target file and scan the content. However, the eicar test file that the poster used in his proof-of-concept was an invalid test file. While Symantec products did successfully unzip the archive and scan the enclosed file, we were not getting a valid detection on the original enclosed eicar test file. Once we recognized the problem with the poster's version of the eicar test file, we recreated the poster's proof-of-concept test with a valid eicar test file and verified our products successfully detected the valid file.
Symantec engineers have determined that this issue does not impact Symantec's antivirus scanning products."

re: Prediction of "Experts" coming true. Spyware for Firefox!
Methinks the Spyware is already there. If you have a huge number of people coding something without checks and balances in place, there will always be a miscreant in the mix.

re: What Browser to Use?
I have to agree with you, especially on the "Configure the browsers' security settings to the prompt you for anything or disable the feature if you are not using it." part. I cannot believe how many people get annoyed with pop up message from switching to secure sites or switching away from secure sites, being asked to run an ActiveX control, etc...
I have everything that I possibly can set to ask me for my Internet zone in IE, and will allow most things in trusted sites (with the obvious disallowing of anything in the restricted sites zone) and ma very happy at the way it works. Personally, rather than be lazy and not know what is going on in the background, I leave them on so I *do* know what is going on without having to check myself.

re: Prediction of "Experts" coming true. Spyware for Firefox!
It's not Firefox that is the problem, it's the Sun Java Runtime Environment through which is the problem. It's still possible to infect IE using IE itself.
Unfortunately, there's no real solution as the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine is far more flawed than Sun's JRE!

re: MSN Hotmail Joins Storage Race - 250MB
Hi
I knew that Hotmail storage is increased to 250MB and if someone is already the member, his mailbox can be increase to 250MB automatically without doing anything. However, my mailbox is still 2MB. Does anyone know how to enlarge it.
Thanks.

re: IE 'unsafe' for 98 per cent of 2004 claims new report
Interesting that Firefox was unsafe during the entire development process, and that it is still unsafe.

re: IE 'unsafe' for 98 per cent of 2004 claims new report
I echo what Rod Trent says and note that I just ran the tests on an updated version of IE and got 0 vulnerabilities.
Mozilla didn't even begin issuing security vulnerability alerts of the kind we get from Microsoft every month until 2005, so comparing the two in 2004 is an unfair exercise. Meanwhile it's March and we've had two new versions of Firefox this year to address serious security vulnerabilities. I like Firefox; I use both it and IE, but it's sloppy thinking to believe it's inherently more secure than IE.

re: Anti-Phishing: AOL - 'Confirm AOL billing info'
I am being billed for an AOL under the screen name of GaynelleO for which I cannot get any information This money is being taken out of my checking account monthly and I was absolutely unable to get any information from the billing clerk in Tampla, Fla on the phone this evening. She suggested that I log on a find out what address this account has. My official and correct e-mail address is Cogo4642@aol.com. I desperately need help on this matter. I may be reached at 301-464-2353. I believe that someone is fraudulently using my checking account for this AOL account.

re: Google says MyDoom virus caused problems
Hello,
I am wondering what is going on with my computer. I think I might have a virus or something. I use firefox, and not IE, but IE is still on my computer. I have had some ads, but I have taken care of them, but now in my C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp folder there are little .gif files appearing. They keep making themselves. They go like aaad, aahk, aakc, and so on. They keep making themselves. Also, when I try to goto Google, or Yahoo pages, it just says soon... at the top left. I hope someone can help me! :(

re: Lavasoft's Ad-aware SE Personal
I am using Ad-Aware SE personal and after every scan I have to go through and manually check each item to have it removed. Is there a way to select all of them at once? when there are at times several hundred items it gets very frustrating to have to click each one.
