IE8 issues if immunization by Spybot-S&D is enabled

There are reports that IE8 will not start fast if user’s system is immunized using Spybot S&D.  I able to reproduce this in Vista and XP.

There is report of high-CPU usage when Spybot –S&D immunization is enabled. I able to reproduce this in XP.

There is also report that IE8 will not load fast or it will hang if restricted sites exists in IE Restricted Sites zone, e.g. using IE-SPYAD and I able to reproduce this also in XP and Vista.

Time for the authors to check their protection tools for IE8 compatibility.  For now, users who want IE8… should disable the immunization and IE-SPYAD.  For users who prefer the protection over IE8, stay first with IE7.

Update1:  My friend Todd (author of ZonedOut) suspect that it's the new feature of IE8 that is causing the issue.  I read around LOL and then noticed that new thing, LCIE.  More here.

Update2: IE Team confirmed the above problem exist IF there are many domains in the restricted sites.  See comment of IE Team, Eric Law a at their blog.

I use both SpywareBlaster and Spybot S&D, and I am not prepared to "modify" my defence to get IE8 to work properly.

I have uninstalled it(dropped back to IE7)till the issue is resolved.

Sad, really sad.

Millions of users rely on securing their IE use with Restricted Sites zone list.

Ah well, time to uninstall IE8 and go back to Firefox 3.1b and Chrome 2beta.

At least they work...

That's the damn result of rushing final products.

In my most honest opinion, this version should have been a RC 2.

There are other issues, which I reported here - www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php

Bad move...

# re: IE8 issues if immunization by Spybot-S&D is enabled

I backleveled my PC from IE8 to IE7 because of the slow startup of IE8 compared to IE7.  I am not running Spybot anymore but I did at one time and did immunize my PC.  I looked at my restricted zone list in IE 7 and it is huge.  Is the solution to the slow startup issue simply the removal of the restricted zone list?  I have better spyware tools now then back when so I'm not afraid to do so if this will allow me to run IE8.

Hi BillH,

At the moment, the only work-around is to remove the huge entries in restricted sites of IE8 to solve the slow startup.

You can do that by undoing the immunization done by the tool - Spybot - S&D, SpywareBlaster or IE-SPYAD (any of these that you use to immunized IE)

You can continue to immunize using Spybot S&D but do not choose to immunize the restricted site zone in IE8.

# re: IE8 issues if immunization by Spybot-S&D is enabled

I can confirm as well. Use both Spybot & Spywareblaster immunization. Start-up of IE8 is so slow that I had to roll back to IE7. Foruntately, the roll back was seamless.

No problems here: XP Pro with IE8 RC1, Win7 with IE8 BETA. Both work quite well, no slow downs. Spybot S&D 1.6.2 immunization on both.

# re: IE8 issues if immunization by Spybot-S&D is enabled

I had about 35000 sites in the restricted zone.

This worked fine with IE8 RC1 but with the final release it took 1-5 minutes to start IE8.

When I erased the sites with Spybot and ZonedOut, it starts fast. I also had problem with open links in a new tab, it shows a new tab that say "connecting", then it started a new window and the tab in the first window disapeard. That was also fixed by clearing the restricted zone.

My solution:

Keep all SpywareBlaster and Spybot-S&D immunization as is,

pc on and open IE8 (slowwww start),

minimize IE8 to task bar and

IE8 is ready for use all day long.

I like GXJ's method.

Leave all SpyBot stuff as is.

Just open an IE8 window and minimize to the tray.  Just leave it there !

I went from 15-20 seconds in opening IE8 or using it in my HTML to just 4 seconds!!

Don't close that IE8 window !!!

Seems this super - easy - solution should be implemented by MS . . .

Thanks for confirming that it work for you.  I also have another method:

Reinstall Spybot-S&D and/or SpywareBlaster but do not downgrade to IE7. Leave IE8 installed then proceed in reinstalling both or any of the 3rd party protection programs.

# re: IE8 issues if immunization by Spybot-S&D is enabled

after the dll registration tweak www.edbott.com/weblog (which didn't seem to help in my case), I tried this fix in my S & D by undoing the IE immunization entries and thus removing the restricted sites

the 32-bit version of my IE8 still takes ages to open empty tabs, the 64-bit version on the other hand is very fast now (comparable to Chrome) - too bad because most plugins (Flash ie.) don't support the 64-bit version

DC,

Do you have other add-ons that might be causing the issue?

Hi Watchman,

Eric at Microsoft IE Team said they will look for ways to address this issue.  Let's wait on any product updates for IE8. You can also try to re-install Spybot-S&D then re-immunized IE8.

I do not think so ...

Although put it on Vista and filter icon changes status to exclamation mark do not see any websites being blocked :-/

# re: IE8 issues if immunization by Spybot-S&D is enabled

I have IE8 and Spybot and am facing the same problemas. I opened IE8 and it took around 10 seconds to be operational, this using Google search as the home page. I then kept the home page open and tested opening several IE8 tabs in a sequence. There is an standard behaviour: the first tab after the home page will always open in one second. The second tab will take 9 seconds to open. The third and fourth tab open in one second. The fifth tab will take 9. The sixth and seventh tabs take one second. The eight tab takes again 9 seconds. There seems then to be a standard like this: two tabs open fast, two tabs open slowly (if we count the first tab + the home page=2 tabs). I closed IE8, restarted the computer, opened IE8, the standard 2:1:2:1... continues. Hopes this detail helps to solve the IE8 problem.

# re: IE8 issues if immunization by Spybot-S&D is enabled

I must be an unusual case here, I use both spybot-sd and spywareblaster.  My IE7 was horridly slow on my XP machine, I figured somehow my IE7 installation was corrupted as IE7 ran faster on Vista.  So decided ill take gamble and install IE8.  IE8 is a LOT faster on my machine, startup is very fast, the first tab doesnt get stuck on connecting like IE7 did, opening new tabs in IE8 still sometimes get stuck on connecting, however when they dont get stuck they are faster than IE7 was.  Its a shame IE still has high resource usage, opening up 10 tabs with google home page uses up 200 meg ram and 4000 handles on my machine which is ridicolous.

Fix IE7 and Fix IE8

I find Spybot-S&D one of the best products on the internet. Relying on it to make my internet a safer experience. I recently moved from IE6>IE8 and was immediately disturbed by IE speed.  Would Microsoft really release a product that did not play well with others? In desperation, I removed IE8 > went back to IE6 > updated to IE7 and I'm still not impressed.

I am prepared to use a non IE browser rather than sacrifice the protection that comes from Spybot-S&D.

Help,

I not only have the slowness with IE 8 but it has affected several other programs as well. Outlook, word etc. Everything is slow. To top it off my 'restore' is not working either, so now my whole PC is hosed since upgrading to IE 8.

I uninstalled and then reinstalled Spybot because I love it. Didn't help.

Do you think just uninstalling IE 8 and going back to IE 7 will fix all the slowness?

It's known issue with immunization.  You can keep Spybot - S&D installed but do not immunized IE.  Just use SS&D to scan your system.
