Webroot no longer offer ASK Toolbar or Ask Search on its installer

I received a report from CoU team-member, Triple Helix that the new installers of Webroot Spy Sweeper, Spy Sweeper Antivirus etc do NOT have ASK toolbar/ASK search anymore. I tried to double-check but my slow connection won’t let me succeed in downloading the installers from Webroot so I requested another CoU team, Hardhead to double-check the installers.  Hardhead confirmed also that the new installers of Webroot do not have ASK toolbar and Ask search.

Because of the above, CoU will delisted Webroot in the “Products with Ask Toolbar”.

Edit to add:  I able to download the new installer of Webroot Spy Sweeper few minutes ago. I test by installing it on test system, XP and Vista on VPC 2007.  Call this as “CoU triple-checking” ---> to make sure there’s really no toolbar (you’ll never know if the installer has been updated :D ).  Yes, there’s NO ASK Toolbar with Webroot Spy Sweeper and Webroot Spy Sweeper Antivirus v6.1.0.100 (released Feb. 2009).  This is good.  Let’s hope other security vendors will stop adding the unwanted and unnecessary component like Ask Search and Ask Toolbar.

Hi Donna, I can also confirm that there is no trace of the toolbar. Just tested the scan version.

Glad to hear you've check the trial version (free scan installer of Webroot) too.

Let's hope they will not add again the Ask search and Ask toolbar.

Thanks!

Wonder what prompted Webroot to drop the toolbar. Was it the bad publicity ... or was it that the earnings were not good enough to warrant its inclusion! But it is nevertheless a step in the right direction and we can only hope that others too follow suit ... some day or the other.

Hi AndyK,

The "feedback" by some security forums led Webroot to the "light".  I can't write much about it because it was done in private but it's really the security community forum's team work who did a good advise to Webroot.  So this decision of Webroot is really a Welcome back! :)
