A Nasty New Worm
Tue, Jan 24 2006 23:16

Protect yourself against a nasty new worm that has appeared by keeping your Antivirus program up-to-date.  Download the latest virus definitions daily and scan your entire computer once every two to three days to make sure you eliminate any possibility of being attacked.  To Protect Yourself:

1) keep AV definitions up-to-date and real-time monitoring of your internet connection ON                                                                                                2) Watch any email attachments, even if they are attached to an email from a person you know. The names of the worm vary, so be very cautious of any attachment                                                                                                                      3) Be careful when accepting files and sharing files, that the file has not been corrupted by the worm.  Scan them with your AV program before opening.

This worm is programmed to erase files on your hard drive on February 3rd and the 3rd of every month following.  Please don't get caught by it, make sure all your security is tight and all of your security programs have up-to-date definitions. Watch what you download in email and in the files you share with others

My First Blog!
Sat, Jan 21 2006 22:20

Welcome to my place on the web, thank-you for stopping by. This is my first attempt at a blog, so please bear with me as I learn blogging, and hopefully you will learn something too, as I struggle along trying to give you information about securing your computer.

First I should introduce myself. My name is Dorothy Gosling and I am a Microsoft MVP for Windows Security, having received the award in July 2005 for my volunteer work in several antispyware forums.  I have been volunteering since 2003, after my computer became infected with Spyware and I had to reach out for help to get rid of it.  After receiving help in the forums at http://forums.tomcoyote.org  I decided to join their classroom, to learn how to help others get rid of the nasties, they had the misfortune to acquire, on the Internet.  I am now an Administrator in the Tom Coyote Forums, while continuing to help others, with their computer problems.  I hold varying different titles at other antispyware forums, all under the nickname of 'dgosling'. This blog is my latest attempt to reach out to the Home User with information about how to set their computer up securely.

Many Home Users' do not realize what nasty things exist on the Internet.  They can very easily become victim to Adware,(not to be confused with the program Ad-Aware by Lavasoft), Spyware, Malware, Phishing Schemes and ID Theft, if surfing the internet on an unprotected computer.

However, there are things the average Home User can do to protect themselves from the nasties, without great expense.  Knowledge is power, and never more true than in PC Security.

While I learn blogging, I will be presenting you with articles and tutorials, links to other security blogs and websites that I think may help you in your quest to lock-down your PC. You use any information found here at your own risk.

This blog is here to share information I have gained from helping in security forums since 2003. I  will try to present information so that it is easy to understand.  However, all information that you find here is posted without warranty.  Any steps you take to secure your computer, as a result of what you read here, is at your own risk. All information posted here is without any guarantee that it will protect you in the event that you become infected while surfing the Internet.

There are many variables to how any program or setup will behave with your hardware, software and Operating System.  If you are still using Windows 98, ME or even Windows 95, as your Operating System (OS), then your risk of infection by any of the nasties that are out there on the Internet, is much higher.

If you follow any links that I have posted here, I am not responsible for what is posted at the link, and you do so at your own risk.
