Some Notes for SMS 2003

Installing SMS 2003

  1. Extend the Active Directory Schema (During installation or after the installation, run extadsch.exe in the SMS installation folder by the Schema Administrator)
  2. If the site server and the SQL server on the different machines, add the site server computer account to the SQL server local administrators group.
  3. Create the database for SMS by SQL server enterprise manager.

Deploying SMS 2003 Operating System Deployment Feature Pack 

  1. Reference Computer (In Workgroup, Installed SMS Advanced Client, Copy the correct sysprep files to C:\Sysprep, NTFS, C:\ is the System drive, Not Upgraded from another Windows)
  2. Create Image Capture CD that included the Image Capture Wizard by SMS Administrator Console. And use it to create image of Reference Computer.
  3. Create Operating System Image Package by SMS Administrator Console.
  4. Create Operating System Image Package Program by SMS Administrator Console.
  5. Deploy the Image by SMS Advertisment, Image Installation CD or RIS.

Operating System Deployment Phase

  1. Validation (Check the destination computers)
  2. State Capture (Capture profile, settings and files)
  3. Pre-install
  4. Install
  5. Post-install
  6. State Restore (Restore profile, settings and files)

Deploying SMS 2003 Device Management Feature Pack

  1. Extend the SMS_def.mof file to support mobile device and Active Sync.
  2. Run the Hardware Inventory on SMS Clients
  3. Run the Resource Explorer or reports to view the information of the connected clients and Active Sync.
  4. Distribute the Device Client installation files to the SMS Clients by Software Distribution.
  5. Connect the mobile device to this SMS Client Desktop to install Device Client.
  6. Open the Device Client Agent in SMS Administrator Console to enable and configure the Software Inventory, Hardware Inventory, Files Collection and Software Distribution.
  7. To deploy software to mobile devices, Run the Distribute Software to Device Wizard.
  8. To configure the settings on mobile device, open Device Settings Manager, create the Device Settings Packages or modify the Installation Items. 

Adding SMS Secondary Site to SMS Primary Site

  1. Add the Site Server's computer account of Secondary Site to the SMS_SiteSystemToSQLConnection_{SiteCode} and SMS_SiteToSiteConnection_{SiteCode} Groups of Primary Site. 
  2. Run the SMS installation on Secondary Site and attach to the Primary Site.
  3. Create and configure Sender and Sender Address in Primary Site by SMS Administrator console.
  4. Run the SMS Services Manager, Connect to the Site Server of Secondary Site and check the services status.
