Wow, it is boring already. BTW - Nice call on not putting the photo of you at Hooters in the Family photo section. LOL Ben
I'm a big fan of the Underdog too!
Way to go Rod, its about damn time :-)
So where is the *alternate* content link then? Gordo
Cool - more geekiness to read. When do you put up your 'alternate' post category?
I used the [Did this help] feedback link on that article and said this: "Anyone retarded enough to need this article probably cannot read, either. What is wrong with your users?" Then I emailed it to my sister who works at an Apple retail store in downtown Philadelphia. This is like religion to her. Then I sent it to a hardcore UNIX buddy. He used their feedback feature too, checked the box that says [It was too hard to understand] and told them that he couldn't figure out which two sides to grasp; front/back, top/bottom, left/top, etc. Oh, and our in-house helpdesk IT department loved it too. I'm thinking of pasting it to MSDN in their feedback thing so they can enjoy it too.
LOL... C u man.. will get you beer when you are here. Cheers.
Thank you ever so much! Thought I would have to go through the set-of of everything all over again. I have had to do this before, but then again, why don't one ever learn? Going from domain, to work group, and back to domain, there is no way for it. But now, YES. I don't know if I did exactly as you said. I copied the key value as you mentioned and exchanged the old (real) account's key value with the new account's and, voila, it worked (as far as I can tell yet). Looks like the mail accounts' passwords are lost but the mails are there and everything else looks as it should. Grazie mille, tusen tack! Stellan
hi i want to know about exchange server 2003.
Thanks, great information over there ! -- rleroy@avantages.com
great advice, thanks..
What a lot of time you have saved me documenting this Many Thanks Wayne
"though personally I still like working with HP better" Care to expand on your comment about preferring to working with HP instead of Dell?
I have been in this industry for almost 20 years now. I have worked with every major vendor, some of which are not even around anymore. I really enjoy the support and experience with some vendors, HP/Compaq being one of them. Phone, web site, in person support has been top notch. Now, have you called Dell lately? Have you used the support.dell.com website? Garbage, and has been for years. Missing files, 404's, difficult to find downloads. And talk about BIOS updates and firmware updates with any admin, Dell puts them out almost daily. They are always fixing something. I could go on and on about Dell, but I will stop. Did I mention that I only own HP workstation and laptops personally, and since I made the switch, every works - flawlessly?
The profile changing worked to some degree. It seems that after these steps are completed. Exchange settings on the client side are not working. A user has to set up all Exchange settings over in the new domain. Desktop icons and IE favorites were preserved along with other profile information, but the Exchange settings were lost.
Total catastrophe.I followed the description step by step and restarted the computer at the end. The computer didn't respond to restart, I reset. When I logon to the profile, I found an empty profile and the previous profile, which I want to move, was deleted totally. All of my documents, settings, everything disappeared. I tried to recover with emergency recovery softwares, it was partially successful but all used mailbox files (pst) shows only 1024KB size. Make a full backup before try to move the profile.
I am sorry you had problems. The steps work, but nothing beats a good backup and being very careful when you attempt them.
moving from a Workgroup to Domain to 2003 Server supporting XP, What steps should I take
I would use FAST - File and Settings Transfer Wizard. Its builtin the product and works great!
Been tasked to do this in the next few months and would like to learn more.
What configuration is the "searches made easy" trick for? It doesn't have any effect on my system: winver.exe: Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633 : Service Pack 1) IE About: Version: 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633 And how does it interact with the forward-through-Microsoft behavior described in www.sniff-em.com/sp2note.html ? Thanks.
They are very close. Above I am suggesting to add keys to the registry and not modify a current one like the sniff-em article talks about. I have tested this with XP successfully. Add the reg keys, I like to make a iesearches.reg file of the settings in green. Then start IE and on address bar try "g clustering" - without the quotes.
Works fine for me. Thank you very much! Dirk
You say that the GalSync account should be Service-restricted. I understand what you mean by a service account, but when you say restricted, other than not being allowed to login locally for the domain controller, what do you mean? Thanks, Steve Robinson.
Had the same issue as Steve... But I understand what the issue is, and you may want to correct these instructions for people who might find this and not read ahead.... The problem is that if you are using roaming profiles on your network, when you point the directory to the correct place in regedit, you are basically telling the server where to dump all of it's files it has under the profile on the server... Thus erasing anything that you had in that folder. So everything is fine except, before you regedit and change the path, you should go into the profile you are working with and make it a Local Profile.
This method IS in fact supported by microsoft just not for the same reason.... Although the link below is for win2k, it works the same way in winXP. MS's instructions include steps to ensure that it works. The permissions on the 'old' profile, must be set to allow the 'new' user access to it, otherwise, it will not work; windows would just create a new profile, since it could not read the one that it was directed to read by the registry. I've been using this method to migrate users onto a domain from a workgroup and it works well, so long as you take care of the security issues. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314045&sd=tech
If you are using this method in a domain environment under Win 2003 server/XP client you will probably need to re-add the machine to the domain at the end of the process to pick up some settings like drive mappings.
Service Restricted, means this is a normal account (without Admin rights), that you only use for this process. The account should be locked down, can't logon through Terminal Services, restrict to the one machine for logon, etc.
Very useful information - helped me a lot. Thank you! TenDavid
This document was very helpful with setting the permissions. Thank you. I'm a little confused about the batch file that you created though. Why would you deltaimport and export for each domain twice? Don't you also have to run a delta synch? I would have thought that you would want to run: cscript "FORESTA_DeltaImport.vbs" - to import new data from A to the connector space and metaverse cscript "FORESTB_DeltaImport.vbs" - to import new data from B to the connector space and metaverse cscript "FORESTA_Export.vbs" - to export new data to A cscript "FORESTB_Export.vbs" - to export new data to B Thanks again.
We do this to bring the information in from each domain, then write the information back out for each domain.
Congratulations!
Don - remember the Delta Import is in fact a Delta Import (Stage Only) AND a Delta Sync combined. Having said that I am also slightly confused as to why you can't just run this from both forests first before doing an Export each way but whatever - it seems to work! Thanks very much Rodney.
i moved a couple hundred profiles from an old domain to a new domain, but now we're having strange problems with select computers, we haven't a clue whats going on. when a user logs in it creates a new profile ( user.000 ) and when you look in the registry it shows in the profile list that the old user account now has the exact SID but .bak added to the end of it, and the new user.000 account is the active one. we knocked the .000 off the end of the active profile, and added the .000 to the .bak one so the user will get back their settings, and it works... BUT it happens again randomly, and this isn't all users.. so far we only had about a dozen people have this problem.
We had a Windows 2000 SBS Server and a Windws 2003 Terminal Server. Both servers were DCs (the 2000 SBS Server was root/forrest). All clients are Thin Clients and were accessing the 2003 TS. The 2000 SBS Server crashed and was rebuilt from scratch. The same server and domain name were used. When TS users log on now they receive the following error messages: 1- Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off. 2- Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator. Restarting the Windows 2003 TS corrects these problems but if left for 24-hours the errors return when users log back on. I have been through the registry and ensured that the profile locations are correct and that the appropriate NTFS permissions are assigned but TEMP profiles are still being created. Somewhere I read that user SIDs are still corresponding to the prvious server's SID before it crashed. Is this the case? If it is how can I re-create the SIDs for users that reflect the rebuilt DC? Note: The 2003 TS has been demoted back to a member server to reduce complexities whilst this problem is being solved. Thanx in advance (being optimistic here)...
Other info: I added an important notice to the post about Google terms and rumours about sites being removed from the index, please check it out and decide for yourself :)
Fixed by adding the google gif. Thanks David for the heads up!
Good post, Rod. It's a common problem! I did it last year implementing a domain, and I'm going to do it again this year moving everyone to a new domain! I think that the problems experienced by most people in following these steps relate to permissions. For example, sometimes the user has customized the permissions so that 'Everyone' or 'Administrators' don't have access. What I would recommend would be to go to the root of the profile directory and give the 'new' user account Full Control to everything in the profile and reset permissions on all child objects - you may need to use Administrator to re-grab ownership of everything first, and also make sure you're showing hidden files, or they'll get missed. Once this is done, you can remove the user from the local Administrators group, and they should be good to go. Another method I've used is just to use the 'copy' button in the User Profiles tab of System Properties, and paste the old profile into the directory that is the profile for the 'new' user account. Once it all works, the original profile can be deleted from the same tab.
After running GALSync, all objects are exported as contacts. I was wondering how difficult it would be to gave the groups exported as groups instead of contacts? Thanks, Travis
I am pretty sure you can not do that with the Free IIFP. Try using the full featured and priced MIIS.
thats excellent news!!!!
Worth pointing out that KB.883652 is not a big roll-up fix, but rather is a small hotfix that only impacts scripting mailbox moves. See the KB article for more details, as there may not be any need to install it if it doesn't apply to your environment: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883652/
Hey guys, We were doing the same thing with a Windows XP machine. We had a guy go in and copy over a user profile instead of first backing up the 5 .pst files the user had when migrating them over the new domain. Well anyways we lost the .pst files. We used the Virtual Lab recovery and got 3 of the 5 .pst files out of hte machine. Do you guys know how or where there has to be how windows puts those .pst files somewhere before they get migrated over to the new user profile? We have scanned every sector of the computer for a .pst file, can anybody please help me with this situation please? Thanks alot! RIch
Hey Rod - your URLS don't wrap properly when your blog is viewed using firefox - the URL spills over into the right column.
for simple moving accounts, not the corrupted SID problem these instructions cover, try the MOVEUSER tool in the MS W2k resource kit. real easy.
ok its fine
Try to use Microsoft's Active Directory Migration Tool (ADMT) for moving accounts, computers, resources between domains. It works fine and can save noticeable amount of time.
I guess my blog isn't geeky or profane enough 8^( But then I could never compete with you. You are my blog god.
It worked perfectly, but I have a special need. I'm using different smtp domains on same forest. I tdoesn't work right if I add 3 agents(2 for same forest) and it won't work with two smtp domains in same agent. Is there a special order for the scripts to synchronize correctly? The result is that in FORESTB, Contacts OU from FORESTA forest, I end up with contacts from FORESTA forest, from both agents, and this isn't right. FORESTB remains unaffected. Thanks a lot, Vlad
Actually, it's not called WUS, it's Windows Server Update Services (or WSUS). For more info, come on over to the WSUS Wiki, or join the OEP newsgroups. The RC was shipped on Tuesday and is wide open.
Agreed, and I debated on wether to put the new name on here or not. As you can see, I went with the old name, cause the word document only used the old name. Thanks!
I'm running windows 2000 server, i'm not able to find security after creating OU contacts Step 17 in 'to configure active directory'. On the Contacts Properties dialog box click Security. Please advice, thanks!
In w2k server and logon as administrator, in the users and group, double click on the administrator, it would promopt 'could not prepare the property page because: The system cannot fine the file specified.'. IT seemed like the user profile is having the problem. Could I use the above method to resolve my problem? Thanks
Worked like a charm. Thanks for the great writeup!
Sir, i want to know more about lcs 2003. 1) what is lcs 2003, why it is used and how? 2) advantages and disadvantages? Could u please send me the details on srk_sangam@yahoo.com
Shane, I currently have the same problem with 1 specific machine......it's happened a couple of times where the machine creates another profile of the guy with .000 on the tail end of it and I don't know why !!! When it happens, I have change the store locations and everything else from colin.000 back to colin Have you found any reasons as to why ? I was searching the web for answers and came across Rod's site and saw your comments
I don't tend to blog much about Clustering as Rodney, Paul and Evan do such a storming job on their blogs,...
better yet: 10 steps - 1- verify location of current user profile my documents c:\doc...\workgroupuser\my documents 2- Add pc to domain 3- Log on as domain administrator account ( don't forget ) 4- Add domain\user or Domain Users to local admin group 5- log off 6- log on as domain\user, verify location of my documents c:\doc...\username\my documents 7- log off 8- log on as domain admin 9- swap the profile folder names: new profile: c:\document and settings\domainuser, rename to .delete old profile c:\document and setting\workgroupuser, rename EXACTLY as new domain user folder ( with out the .delete ) 10 - log on user - ta da I have used this over 500 times on; nt, w2000, xp NEVER FAILED - of course your milage may be different !
Thanks a bunch folks. Works like a charm. Moved myself from local group to a domain in less than a couple of hours. Worst case was moving from my local administrator to local admin/domain user account... Would recommend to anybody anytime. - Ram.
HI Guys, seemed to be an interesting discussion and usefull uRL to me. I have a problem with profile and user folder migration or moving hope someone can answer. It is little different than the above ones. I have a windows 2003 domain running with 3 DCs. One has all the PDC emulator stuff like FSMO roles, DNS etc. So i had to replace the that main dc wiht a new server. SO my first step was to add the new server to the Domain as a DC. I got thru that and i also made the new server DNS till that point everything is fine. Next step was to move file shares. I have three shares (Profiles, Users, Shared). My plan was to first back the three shares using NTBACKUP to the new server and then restored them there. So next step was to change the server name in everybody profile as i had roaming profiles for everyone. So i used Active Directory Feature to do that. Just select all the users right click properties change the profile stuff like roaming profiles and also the mapped user drive to the new server. And i use a login script to map the third share. Everything is woring fine but when users login they still get a reminder balloon of saying that they are disconnected to the old server and is currently offline. I am not sure what else i missed or if my procedure was wrong. When i click on the balloon and try to see what files it want to synchronize i dont see anything. I am not sure what exactly is the problem if anybody went thru this or have any idea to help me solve this issue that will be great. Although everything is working fine i still want get rid of the reminder balloon. thanks a lot, Naveen
Regarding Martin's advice "Try to use ADMT for moving accounts...", is it not correct that ADMT requires both the old and the new domains to be accessible at the same time? This is not an option if you do not have a new server or temporary spare server. Another article that covers this topic well is http://www.certmag.com/articles/templates/cmag_howto.asp?articleid=819&zoneid=91. Bob R.
A simple question here for user profile. One of user is using Workgroup Profile. Now he is member of domain and want to use his Workgroup profile. Is that possible using above steps? Thanks
Ok. Here i did the following to move or change a profile. In regitry (ImagePath) i changed the Path (This is the main thing you are doing) and then give the full control permission to user on profile directory and then reset the permission on child objects. This step is necessary because if you don't have atleast Read only permission on Desktop folder the profile will not be loaded. That's it. Thanks
This blog explaining the setup of GalSync for synchronizing two disparate address lists in an Exchange 2003 environment across two forests is useful. However, another question lies in how to synchronize free/busy traffic for calendaring functions across the same forests. Can GalSync be also used for calendaring, or is there another utility that does the same for free/busy? If such a utlity exists, how is it set up? Thank you in advance for your reply. Julio
Reading your post I found my exact problem. Your final solution also fixed my machine. As a follow up to search terms you were mentioning I found you by Google "xp minimize off taskbar". Many roads lead to a solution on t'interweb
There is no commerical utility out there that can do this? I would pay $$ for this utility if somebody would write it!
Hey guys good day! I have a user which is a power user in the workgroup side and want to save his profiles upon enrolling him to the domain. I followed your 7 steps however i found out that the local user must be an administrator to access the same profile while in the domain. I noticed that when i change the user back to power user group ( the way it was before migration ) it crashed! all i can see is a black desktop with the icons and some can't-run programs such as microsoft outlook for email. I appreciate the way it was presented but it doesn't fit to my needs. Is there another way you can save profiles by using a power user identity! help ?????
Hi all, I am looking for an answer for the reverse problem. Connecting computers running Win XP sp2 to a domain on Win Server 2003. I'm able to create all accounts on the server, as well as copy their local profiles to the roaming profiles. The problem is some of the local settings do not show up in the roaming profile when the accounts are set as "Restricted" or "Standard - Power user" and Microsoft Outlook does not work unless the user is an "Administrator". I thought it might be due to priviledges, so I tried giving the users full access to the folders on the server but doesn't fix the problem. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
MSDTC resource fails in cluster group after SP1 is applied to node and the group is failed over the the patched node. Unable to start the DTC resource on the patched server and must uninstall the service pack to get it to come on line. Any ideas?
Hello all, a commercial tool for all this would be: "Profile Wizard" from ForensIT I haven't tried it yet, but it looks like it's a little script-like thing that does the same registry-path changing as described in most " x steps" descriptions :-) However, I haven't tried this tool yet, and when I tried copying user profiles or changing the key in the registry to point to the old profile, I can not start Outlook or the "Mail" tool in the Control panel. Outlook says "can not start" and the "Mail" tool syas "not enough memory" (I know this means there is a problem with access rights somewhere, but not how to fix it :-) So I will first try using the Microsoft ADMT tool: www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/downloads/admtool.mspx since I am migrating from a Windows2000server, which is the current Domain Controller, to Windows2003sbs (and will then add the 2000 server as a simple file server... woudln't it be nice if 2003SBS would just allow Active Directory trusts? That's M$ for you... :-) I'll let you know how the mileage went :-)
Thank you! I finally got that fixed!
I am trying to move from a workgroup to a domain using the followin steps. 1) Logon as admin and create new domain user and domain admin ids 2) logon and logoff new domain user 3) logn domain admin, Copy workgroup user profile to domain user profile. 4) logon domain user I have no problem as long as the domain user is local admin. When I try moving restricted users, Outlook says "can not start" and the "Mail" tool says "not enough memory" Any ideas would be appreciated.
Same problem with a slightly different background. We have a machine running our domain on Samba 3.0. We want to migrate back to windows accounts. We have tried repeatedly and unsuccesfully to copy over the information to an Active Directory domain but not working. My next plan of attack is to create all the accounts in AD, move the computers to the new domain, then write an app that will attach all the new profiles to the old profile security information. Hopefully it will work. I will let you know. Or i wont have a network soon :P PEACE!
Saved my problem. I love you!! (not really :P)
Spot on.... I did system restore from the day I remembered having problems with my printer driver... Got you searching in google... "xp minimize problems"... Thanks mate.... spot on....
This article is total bullshit. Any such profile copying activities which do not deal with repermissioning the users HKCU (i.e. the contents of the ntuser.dat file) are doomed to failure, as the HKCU of the new profile will be permissioned only to allow access from the old user. This is almost certainly the cause of complaints with outlook profiles, nonworking applications, other wierd problems, etc. To solve, you have to open the ntuser.day file in regedt32 (reg/load hive), add the permissions for the new user, and then unload it. And if you want to keep persistent drive and printer mappings you had better hunt those down in the registry and modify the assigned usernames as well.
After I istalled 891861 I can no longer access the internet nor SQL server 2000 on 2 of my Windows 2000 boxes. I can remote into my boxes, but cannot access the internet from with inthe boxes once connected. Sql server is installed on both boxes and cannot be accessed, started, unistalled, or reinstalled. Suggestions? randy_jones01@hotmail.com

I am having this exact issue running 2003 Terminal Server authenticating on SBS2003 domain controller. Did you find a resolution for this, Mike? Thanks.
Lucky you - when I try to install Windows Vista on VPC 2004 sp1 I only get "windows is loading files", then a black screen, thats all. No DVD access, no HDD access, only 100% cpu usage and a black screen. *sigh*
Hello I am from ROMANIA. It is available also here ?

Rod posts today about the strange (and sometimes frustrating) behavior where outbound SMTP connections...
Good article & comments. Quick question: I had a co-worker that left the company and we gave him his computer. Before he left, I changed his network settings to be part of a local workgroup, instead of the domain. I also set up a local user account and gave it Admin access. Now when he logs on, he uses Outlook and his settings aren't there. I've looked throughout the computer for a .pst file, but cannot find it. I reset the ownership of the old domain account to the new local user account, just in case that was blocking him from seeing it, and still nothing. Thanks!
I used this method with a 2003 DC and a dozen or so w2k workstations. Worked like a charm, except that when I demote the users back to "users", the first time they log in (as domain/local users, not local admins) it creates a new profile. Anyone know what to do about this?
Thanks Mate, worked like a charm!
Hi, I just had the same problem that Shane wrote about way back on January 18, 2005. I solved it exactly like he did, but am curious if anyone know what caused this. It's got me stummped. Thanks, Randy.
That's $25, not 25%. But thanks!
Your SBS certified? You can have another DC, but the SBS box must hold the FSMO roles.
I can't beleive it, I used the google search and found your web page. bingo my problem is fixed. now I could see my lovely minimized programs onto the taskbar. Thank you very much God bless you
Hi, kelly's webpage really helps a lot of friends. But at the page itself it wrote "NOTE: If your anti-virus software warns you of a "malicious" script, this is normal if you have "Script Safe" or similar technology enabled. These scripts are not malicious, but they do make changes to the System Registry. " When the script start running, the norton anti-virus prompt me that it is malicious and it is high risk. So shall i contiune running the script? Anyone had this problem too?
My goodness! It works like a charm! Thanks for your blog Rodney that helps finding the solution. I'll have to pray tonite. Love ya!
Thank you for your article Rodney. This fixed a problem I had too.
OMGoodness, thank you profusely for posting your article, Rodney. This problem occurred for the second time on my computer... the first time I was advised I would have to reformat - which I did, and what a PAIN! This time, I researched and found your Blog and then went to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm . Is there anyone who can intelligently say what makes this problem occur? I always feel more comfortable knowing WHY. Susan
Thanks a lot! I just wasted my other code on a 70-291 exam (wanted to take 70-290!!) :)
Good links - thanks :)
Man you are the best!!! Fixed my problem too. THANKS!!!
Best of the text i read about a problem.
Thank you for your help. I lost my taskbar when explorer hanged up when connecting SSL secured network place with untrusted sertificate. Saved me lots of time and tears. Googled with words "windows xp taskbar lost".
good
Does it also works on Windows server 2003 terminal clients ?

Most of the cluster MVPs will be located in the technical learning center area. Feel free to stop in an say hello :)
Any chance you could post more information from both of your cluster presnetations? I was unable to attend TechEd, but would love to get more information from your session!! Anyway to get a copy of the info? Was it recorded and available on the DVD we can order? Thanks!
Order the Tech Ed DVD here - http://shop.ecompanystore.com/mseventdvd/MSD_productdetail.asp?EventID=8
I did exactly as the article stated, even used the same IP address range. Before activating NLB every machine in a 3 node cluster could ping all NICs on all machines. Once I enabled NLB on each of the public NICs, none of the machines coudl ping each other. This is in an isolated lab environment with only the three nodes connected together via a giga switch. Good old Windows 2003 server huh!
That is normal behavior. Use an admin machine to test connectivity and ping.
I can't believe it. Just when you think it's safe to go back to reading the web... Part II  of the...
Thank you. I had tried everything. It took about 5 seconds to run and fix the problem.

Nice Tip. Congratulations!
Well, I've read that somebody mentioned ADMT to migrate profiles. In my experience, ADMT does not manage user profiles, am I wrong?
ADMT can migrate profiles. So can Files And Settings Transfer Wizard (FAST).
I don't understand then how NLB knows to use the 192.168.100 adapters for inter-array communications. The reason this is important is: a) I want to make sure that I am not hitting my subnet with multicast traffic from NLB b) Even more importantly I have another application using a 3rd nic on each machine that is 192.168.101 and its traffic must be seperate from the NLB traffic. So how will NLB pick which nic to use for the back end traffic? Thanks
Fantastic sorted problem in the matter of seconds i was concerned when anti virus said it was high risk threat but others had also raised concern but had gone ahead and run the programme as i did and it works brilliantly.
The 192.168.100 adapters are not used for inter-array communications - only the NLBed 10 NICs are. Only the 10 network has NLB on it. Anything 192 will be seperate.
I have re-installed win2k3 several times thinking there may have been an installation problem, media corrupt, memory error, harddisk problem, replaced all and the same kept happening no idea why, this article was the first and most helpful I came across.
Why doesn't microsoft know this. the said to re-install windows.
PingBack from http://www.varlog.us/2006/07/31/cluster-services/
Can you tell me how to setup and use external client to ping NLB node1 and node2?
"If MSDTC is used with SQL, you should ensure it is in it's own group, on it's own disk resource." In our environment, we use MSDTC with SQL, thus MSDTC resource must depends on SQL Network-Name (whinin SQL Server Group in Cluster Administration concole), or the distributed transations will not launch to work. Is it conflict with the recommendation quoted above?
Microsoft is human too?
To setup an external client, use any other machine on the external network to ping. The firewall or router can also be used.
MSDTC with a SQL Cluster: You can only have one instance of MSDTC for a cluster. SQL will use it no matter what group it is in. What we do at work is to ensure MSDTC group comes up before the SQL Group and then SQL uses it. No issues. If you have to put it into the SQL Group, you are problaby using some of the same resourse, disk maybe? Never a good idea.
Have you guys any plans to run this course outside the US, e.g. London for instance??
I am (re) building a failover SQL cluster, this DB is a database publisher of about 200G. What size shall i put the MSDTC to?? any suggestions
I can only agree with the other posts on here. You're awesome!! Thanks for pioneering the search. I mean, I think I would've never found Kelly's Korner this fast by myself. In fact I often have made the experience that it's easier to keep the search words very general, thereby getting to somebody else's blog who will offer more specific clues. I just searched: "windows xp taskbar issues". I had the same problem on my old computer and just gave up finding a solution after a day, b/c I thought that it was the old age of my HD. But this time my computer was brand-new - so thanks again for paving the way for all of us...relying on Alt-Tab for more than a day is very annoying :)
Use the settings above, they will work nicely.
Yes, we are looking at the March time frame for London.
You Da MAN! This has easily got to be one of the most annoying problems ive come across in my helpdesk career to date! Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
Surely not the first and most certainly not the last. Thanks for fast cure. Google found u'r site.
WE LOVE YOU
Dude... thank you!!!!! I lost is a couple of months ago.. your blog(?) took me to the script (line 240) and it's all good now.. thanks buddy!!!
Hi there,
This is the only post I saw with the option for "if it does not work". But unfortunately it does not work for my case still. My registry has the DWORD set to 1 already and the CluAdmin still tells me that cluster is existing, no matter what new name I used for the cluster or even a new domain. May I ask you for further advise or hints?
Thx & Rgds,
Chang Hong
Time to call Microsoft Support.
This is for Windows 2003 clusters and NOT Windows 2000 clusters, right?
Help! It won't work on my computer! All of you say thanks its amazing and i'm still asking is there anything else i can do it wont work. HELP!!!!!
Should be both, though I don't have 2000 clusters anymore, and don't ever want one :)
Using ADMT to migrate user profiles:
http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/library/e9197ee7-d959-4b00-aff4-19b575ba28561033.mspx?mfr=true
All procedures above include adding the user to the administrators group. Is this to avoid problems in the ACL of the redirected profile? What if I don't want tyhe new DOMAIN user being administrator of the machine?
Will just granting the new DOMAIN user full control on the old profile folder work fine?
Too funny......:)
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for making my day.
For those of you with a corporate PC (to say that your PC's severely restricted):
Open Windows Explorer, Open the menu Tools, Click on Folder Options, Open the tab File Types, Click on the heading "File Types", Look for the type "VBScript Script File", Click on the button Advanced, Under Actions click the button New, Fill the box Action with "Open", Fill the box 'Application used to perform action' with "C:\WINNT\system32\wscript.exe" (or replace WINNT with your Windows directory), click the button OK, click the second button OK, click the third button OK.
Afterwards normally you'll be able to run the VBS Script.
YAY!!!! I had the same problem and searched forever... finally found this post! THANK YOU!!!
I can't exactly explain it here, but I have compiled all the articles related to NLB at one place.

Thanks for posting this article. After struggling for weeks to understand how the IIFP works for GAL syncs, this really clarified things.

Very nice site! Good work.
I have already enjoy your website, and it is so nice and cool. I will visit your website again. Thank you. Please More updates
How about in 1 easy step?
http://www.itsnotdata.com/profwiz/index.htm
They have a FREE (for personal use) tool that does all this for you. It sets the profile for shared use, sets permissions, registry, etc..., and then it even joins the new domain. All automatic.
Thank you very much this has solved my problem as well!!
Great work!

:)
Chalk up another satisfied reader. THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH!
Sorry for the dumb question, are you saying that 32bit DC's aren't supported? or that to get your 32bit DC's updated with the Exchange 2007 schema you have to go through additional steps than you would if you were running 64bit DC's?
Great! You helped me to solve this annoying problem quite fast!
Forget that script and regedit stuff for retail and OEM. Simply search system32 for wpa.* rename both files, then run the %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
Bam, you're done.
I just did it 20 minutes ago.
For OEM and Retail, just search for wpa.* and rename these files.
Then run %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a to change your product key and yes it works,
I just did it 30 minutes ago to change my msdn-provided key to a customer purchased (retail) key. No, the software I wrote was not in production until this key was changed :)
Thank you so much. I too searched microsoft and google and eventally found your site with the link. It works so fast too.
By now you are aware that SP2 is out for Windows Server 2003 and R2. I have already seen quite a few
Uh no.
Untick the SP2, say remind me later and get pre sp2 patches.
Not a bold move... we just don't know how to MU :-)
You are a STAR.
After the best part of a morning trying and resetting everything I could think of I eventually discovered this tip which worked immediately.
I can't be certain but I have a hunch the problem coincided with installing Snapfisk Quickload.
Congrats Rod...Just found out I was renewed as well!!!

I couldn't get this to work with 2003 SP2. It worked fine on a 2003 SP1 machine.

Agents for 3 diffrent Forests (for example A, B and C) and you have done the Import and Synch on all 3 MA's - is it possible to seperate the export??? So, if you run the export Profile on Mgmt. Agent for B only the Forest C will be exported to the AD of Forest B???? thanx Roman

I think what he is saying is that you can update your Active Directory by using the 32-bit (evaluation) version of Exchange 2003 running the setup /prepareXXXX functions from the console of the W2K3 DCs. 32-bit DCs are supported and work just fine. If your NTDS.DIT is larger than about 800MB (the maximum cache size for 32-bit DCs), then 64-bit DCs may be a good move. But they are not required.
This is great news. I am really looking forward to these improvements compared to how MSCS works in Server 2003.
Great!
This allows to run prepare schema and AD on offline FSMO using 32 bit version of exch2k7!
No more troubles if schema update blows. You just throw the master away and seize another DC for the roles!
Thx dude!
Sorry I installed WINDOWS 2003 Ent. R2 on server two node cluster.
When i Installed i used a cd ( I don't rembere if MSD or other cd - retail or OEM), because i HAVE Volume Licence Key on paper but not original CD with this license Key.
I make this installation and only now I have original CD for these license Key. Now i want to activate product, but prod ID was not accepted e the change product key was not accepted. So i don't want reinstalling cluster, Active directory, DHCP, DNS, WINS ecc.Can i change produc key or activate the actual product key, without problem at start up??
thanks
Andrea
Will I be able to Cluster Servers on Windows 2008 using VMware, were the VM is not hosted on the ESX server. I know you can do it, but will it be supported By Microsoft?
Why do I hear different things about Exch2007 from different folks? I've read numerous times that Exch2007 will only be supported on Server2008 when SP1 comes out. Did you just forget to mention that? or are you saying that it will be supported even w/o SP1?
I can't believe how much time I have spent. I even called Microsoft. You were the only one to help...now, it works great!!!!!
I was migrating users profile on a PC in workgroup.when I mapped new user name with older user existing profile...all the setting I have got,but lost outlook.pst.I dont have backup for pst files. Can anyone help me out to get those pst back....its very urgent and have critical data.
Thanks in advance buddies.
As usual Jim is correct. Sorry for any confusion.
I can't begin to guess Microsoft's support stance for Windows Server 2008 and Vmware ESX, since 2008 will have a very rich Virtual environment builtin.
I did not mention if you need a service pack(nor what version 1, 2, 3) to run Exchange Server 2007 on the RTM version of Windows Server 2008 because I simply don't know.
What I do know is this, Exchange Server 2007 will run on Windows Server 2008 RTM. What will you have to do to get it up and running? No clue, but it will be a supported configuration.
Does this schema update break 32bit exchange servers in other domains within the same forrest?
I'm trying to install IIFP on 2003 Enterprise Server. I have .NET 2.0, IIS installed locally and I'm using a remote SQL 2000 server. After typing in the service account name, password, and domain (I'm using the administrator account) it begins the install process but then suddenly gives me an error and quits:
"Error 25082. Error installing the Identitiy Integration Feature Pack WMI Provider. This is not a valid MOF File"
I cannot find any info on the Internet regarding this error, any suggestions?
I get the 0x80041001 error when i try to run it, and sence so little is known about the error and it would take forever to try to fix, could someone edit the commands to make this a .bat file so errors could be bypassed?
The schema update is just an update, it does not break anything in any domain. It allows your to install Exchange Server 2007 into the forest.
Rodney,
Are you serious.. no in place upgrade from 2003 to 2008 ? OUCH ! That will leave a mark ! (double hardware to migrate !)
Bad enough Exchange 2007 is 64bit only... :(
Hey whats your favorite cigar anyway ? I'm a big fan of Torano ! Though its almost worth traveling to the carribean to smoke a few Cuban Romeo's !!! FANTASTICO !
good blog btw !
You are fkkkin great THANKS!!!!
you saved my shitty work pc :)
Most 2003 clusters are 32 bit, I would hope all 2008 clusters will be 64 bit. I don't see the lack of an upgrade as a big deal.
I love Partagas Cuban (Serie D & P) cigars. My favorite non-Cuban is the Partagas 160. I smoke one right after my session at Tech Ed. CAO makes wonderful cigars, they are second place. Third is a toss up between Padron, H. Upmann (Cuban and Dominican), Torano Virtuso and Rockey Patel Vintage.

Thanks! I added some new quick launch items and then out of no where my taskbar got really big and then some things dissapeared. I got my icons back but lost my open program tabs. Hi all,
Similar problem... I recently had a Windows 2000 Server die a very nasty death. New server is being installed next week with Windows 2003 Server.
Now the users on the W2K server were logged onto it as a domain environment. Can I use the Domain Migration Tool to transfer the user accounts and domain settings onto the 2003 Server. I have images in my head of having to go round recreating every single user profile otherwise. If I were to disconnect the workstations from the old domain and then reconnect them to the new domain would the profile not then be created as C:\Docs+Settings\<user>.000?
Thanks
Hey man... all i gotta say is THANX. :-)
Thanks a lot!!!!
the last thing works!
bye
This is a great article.
Though, in my environment the contacts are not imported into the CS of FORESTA and I suspect that I have a problem in the ForestA MA configuration, maybe in section 19. where you describe the "Configure GAL page, configure the settings under Exchange configuration". Can you please provide me more information about this sublect?
Thanks in advance!
Thank you, thank you !!!...you saved my nerves

How to install Exchange Server 2007 Schema Extensions
Looking forward to it.
Whatever you do, don't upgrade to Exchange 2007. It's difficult to configure, doesn't work correctly half the time, they messed up the SSL certificates for outside OWA, and most everything is command line driven! I don't get it, they should be moving forward, not backward! Going BACK to command line is a stupid mistake on Microsoft's part and unforgivable. You have to enter some crazy long command just to change the default size limits for receiving or sending mail, compared to the previous version it was just a click and a number! Plus, by default, you aren't able to send and receive to the outside world. You have to turn it on! I don't get it, is Microsoft trying to get less customers?
Dave,
Are you trying to install MIIS on a 64b platform? MIIS is only supported on 32b and it throws error:
when trying to insall on 64b.

With all the problems that have been coming Microsoft Windows, why are people still staying loyal to them. Take the popularity of Vista. Why is it one of the hottest new things out there? It brand new and not fully tested. Just like every other version of Windows that has come out, the first version is always full of bugs. I know at least 6 people that had it crash their computer because of a bug in the coding. I think I am going ot at least wait a full year before I think about moving on to Vista. Just like any of Microsofts programs. There are bound to be bugs in the system. Lets us not forget WindowsME or even WindowsXP. So people have the nerve to be surprised that they have a problem with patches. Why? If we look back on their history, I do not know how we can be surprised.
It still works!!!! Thanks for the tip.
I had this problem and searched ALL over the place before I ran into your article. Thankfully, I kept reading it to the end to come across the fix that saved my taskbar. Thanks a million.
Rod. Thank you so much.!!! It really works. after spending more than eight hours trying to solve by self. I found you page and BAM.! Problem Solved.
I would like to translate part of your article into spansih in order to share your experience with other language community.

Hi;
I need to migrate the Win2k3 terminal Server user Profiles (Not Roaming Profile) to another new Win2k3 Terminal Server, will this 7-steps works for me? If it is not applicable, how can i do that?
Anyone please advice...Thank you.
I am planning to migrate an existing WIn2k3 Terminal Server to a new Server Machine.
My Problem here is how to migrate the Terminal Server User Profiles (not roaming) to the new Win2K3 Terminal Server?
Is the 7-steps described here application to my situation?
Can someone advice me please.
Thank you.

AWESOME MATE!! Fixed my problem I love blogs & websites like this that REALLY work, what a headache workin out how to fix this. Thanks sooooooooo much your a jem
Thanks. I solved the same problem based on your suggestion.
Do you mind, telling us what is the hdd size that you extended?
In any other clustered environment you can use the VIP as a source address. Welcome to MS.
All i can say is THANK YOU!
You might want to note that when you run the command line installs, it automatically defaults it to a CCR cluster, NOT SCC. I ran into the issue of adding Active nodes to the cluster and finding out it the cluster was installed as a CCR, by using the EXSETUP and/or setup.com commands you state above. I had to rebuild the whole cluster again and use the GUI to add the first Active node.
you little beauty!
#240 works. oh i love you so much.
First off .. great write up it helped a lot.
Second .. to install the custer as a Singe Copy Cluster aka SCC run the following command.
exsetup /newcms /cn:<YOUR MBNAME> /cip:<YOUR IP> /css /cdp:<PATH TO SHARED STORAGE>
You cannot point the shared storage to the root of the drive. It must go into a directory.
If you ever plan on using Standby Continues Cluster Replication that is released in Exchange 2007 SP1 then your path should be unique on all servers. I am currently using the scheme of SERVERNAME-STORAGEGROUPNAME. So if the server is named mbx01 and and your storage group is named Storage Group 1 the path would be <DriveLetter>:\MBX01-SG1
Hello
Could you please clarify what adsiedit is ?
21. Open ADSIEdit and navigate to the container in the domain where the users, contacts, or mail enabled distribution groups are located.
22. Right-click to expose the context menu, and select Properties.
23. Click on the Security tab, and click Advanced.
24. Choose to Add an ACE.
The usual problem that I noticed about Microsoft is that they release and release lots of stuff without double checking the quality of their products or services. Although it’s good that something new has been released but what good will it give if it will ruin everything that we’re used to. I wish Microsoft will be stricter in their quality control; after all, the tech world is not just about developing new tool it’s also about usability or service to the consumers.
If this is for updating, does that that mean the previous version installed should be removed prior to installation of this new one?
Hi, Can you give any reason (except MS article) why MSDTC cannot go into the cluster group (with Quorum) as this is our standard at Unilever!
Pete
quite a flat joke
I started to use this debigging tool but after I got the cab file I dont know what todo.Kindly help tome solve this.
Hmm im having some odd errors occurring when i try to do this :(
All my users are in one forest and i and im trying to get contacts to appear in the other forest.
Everytime i run the MA agent i get extension-unexpected-attribute-value on every single ou and user??
maybee im doing the container/target wrong.
As far as i can work it, container is the location of all the users you want synced and target is the Ou you want the contacts for the other forest to appear in. (or am i going about this wrong somewhere)
Thanks man, did great ;-)
thanks so much, this really helped my computer after only a few minutes of searching google. You're a lifesaver!
Thank you for your article Rodney. This fixed my problem I had too. And your article saved me a lots of headache.
I had the same annoyance with the minimised windows. Using system restore gave temporary relief. I hope this will be more permanant; fingers crossed.
Total Life Safer!
After we could get into the cluser admin everything came back up perfectly. Scary Stuff
hmm, worked well, thanx for the tool. i wonder, what might have coused this problem, any thoughts on that?
Rodney, thank you for the saving
All of these procedures are great, especially the profqiz one, but isn´t there a procedure that lets you perform these steps without giving the user local administrator permissions? Specifically I want to be able to migrate a local workgroup profile to a domain profile, and the stuff that interests me, like Environment Variables, will only transfer with local administrator permissions.
thanks a lot, you saved me from a nervous breakdown, i couldn't work all day long.

OK, I have installed the 180 day trial of ILM 2007. I have MIIS 2003 but needed to use SQL 2005 for a domain merger. Until we get our mailboxes all moved over, I need to use the GALSync. My problem is, everything seems to work fine except there are no contacts created in either domain. Any ideas? I get no errors.
- i salute you -
This is so true!!
Thanks. I could relate to the process all the way to the successfull conclusion. And Kellys Tweaks had the answer, again.
I like it! Really really good this - we have not got it setup yet but I am sure this little trick would help us a lot in the future. Thanks
I'd lived with this annoying problem for several years(!!) having failed to find any solution when it first happened. Many thanks for pointing me towards the solution. My next problem is to get out of the Alt + Tab habit...
Problem resolved. Thanks a million!
Notes:
Something worth mentioning: By default if your importanting contacts the option in the Exchange Advanced Tab: Use MAPI rich text format will be checked.
When clients using microsoft word as their default editior in outlook send email, it will send as a file attachment. To avoid this you will need to remove all references to mAPIRecipient in the following areas:
Edit your agent:
Under Select Attributes uncheck mAPIRecipient
Under Configure Attribute Flow you will need to select each Data Source Attribute.
Expand the Object type under Data Source Attribute and find mAPIRecipient and click delete. Do this for all Data Source Attributes.
Now I'm not sure when you re-export this to your AD if it will overwirte existing settings. I completely deleted all contacts and did a fresh export. When looking at the contact properties you will find that Use MAPI rich text format has been unchecked.
Saved my life :)
i tried this but it still does not work. 2 nodes won't start it's cluster services. the last time i restarted i waited at least 7 hours then cluster services just started. help pls. anyone out there. thanks!

So cool!!! Thanks a lot!!! Now I can go on woohoo..problem solved!!! YAY
Thank you so much for the ProfWiz link - it looks like just what I need!!!
I am assuming in step 8 where you show the command line, you mean:
setup.com /PrepareDomain
You have:
8. Setup /PrepareDomain
If you have other domain in which you would like to add Exchange 2007 servers in. Run this in each of those.
From a command prompt, type:
setup.com /PrepareAD
Thank you for your tips.
I am facing the same issue of 0xc103fd2c while setting up the Single Copy Cluster. I have tried what you have mentioned in the article. Can you guide me please?

with Failover clustering, our physicsl disk going to failed state for every isAlive() where we are copying and deleting some files. when we don't perform any deletion then the disk resource maintains online state. Could you write more details about what is happening inside isAlive() w.r.t physical disk resource.
Thanks a bunch

Because of the failed Active Node install, I'm reading this thread. Here's my cmdline:
(And yes, cn and cip are unique)
exsetup /newcms /cn:Mail01 /cip:x.x.x.x /css /cdp:"M:\SANDRIVE"
This still fails with the following:
An unexpected error has occurred and a Watson dump is being generated: Cluster Common Failure Exception : The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007139F)
The Store resource is "Offline" and the SA resource is "Failed". I change the Pending timeout to 1800 from 180 and then try to bring them online but they both just fail.
I've run exsetup /removecms and re-installed a few times now and still failures.

Thanks a lot! After a couple of hours search through the Internet my taskbar got fixed in the proper way!
It's unbelievable how difficult is to find info regarding so simple problems...
Omg! Thank you! Doing Alt+Tab all the time has started to drive me crazy.
There's a simpler way to create date and time based files using the built in %DATE% and %TIME% variables:
@ECHO OFF
SETLOCAL
REM ECHO %DATE%
REM ECHO %TIME%
SET _Year=%DATE:~10,4%
SET _Month=%DATE:~4,2%
SET _Day=%DATE:~7,2%
IF /I "%TIME:~0,1%" == " " (
SET _Hour=0%TIME:~1,1%
) ELSE (
SET _Hour=%TIME:~0,2%
)
SET _Minute=%TIME:~3,2%
SET _Second=%TIME:~6,2%
SET _FileName=%_Year%%_Month%%_Day%%_Hour%%_Minute%
SET _
ENDLOCAL
The only tricky part is parsing the hour field.
SETLOCAL and ENDLOCAL are also usefull for removing the vars you set in a batch file.
UAU that is amazing, I was also looking for something to solve my problem. Thank you.
