Dell only supports Open Manage 4.4 (http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/type.aspx?c=us&cs=555&l=en&s=biz&SystemID=PWE_PNT_P3C_2850&category=0&os=WNET&osl=en&deviceid=2331&devlib=36) BEFORE you install Windows Server 2003 SP1. Time to test this out on a Dell 2650. Dell says to upgrade to 4.4 before you install SP1, when I tired to upgrade, Open Manage wanted a full uninstall of 4.3 (this includes Broadcom & Intel support if installed), reboot, installed Dell Open Manage 4.4, rebooted, tested Open Manager – everything is working so far.
Dell also says that you may get an error - http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kb/en/document?dn=TT1092326. Though I have thankfully not seen this error – YET!
Too bad the really cool Server Update Utility (SUU) is only at version 4.3 (see update below)http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?releaseid=R96734&c=us&l=en&s=biz&cs=555, because it would help uninstall and reinstall Open Manage 4.4. DOH!
So, I ran SUU 4.3 on my test Dell 2650. I only needed a NIC driver update. J This first machine is running Exchange Server 2003 (I know, I have guts don’t I?)
Time to install SP1. Installed Windows Server 2003 SP1. Rebooted.
Ok, time to kick the tires. First I stop off in the event log. Help and Support gives an error, it could not be deleted. Strange, I use it, why would I delete it? The Application log shows Event ID 16387 but I can’t launch the URL, cause Help and Support is has not been started. In fact, it’s gone now from Services. Bummer! I can’t find anything on the Internet about 16387 or help and support under SP1. This sucks, ok time to see if installing Security Configuration Wizard will help get Help and Support back. Now that it’s installed, I run it and add back in Help and Support. I apply the new security policy and reboot. The rebooted took forever, but did finally complete. Great now all the NIC’s have a firewall turned on. Crap, Help and Support is still gone. Crap, crap, crap. Ok, time to re-run SCW. This time I look for Uninstalled Options and find Help and Support, interesting since last time around I said to install it. So I add it back in and check the changed services page, nothing listed for Help and Support. Crap. Back up the truck. I double check, it’s not under uninstalled options, but it’s also not under install options, so I check that. Ok after double backing several times Help and Support if firmly checked, though the system thinks it does not have to make any changes – this worries me to no end. I apply the new SCW template and reboot. No change, so I stopped using the firewall and uninstalled SCW. No change. Ok, so I will uninstall SP1 and see if Help and Support comes back. You have to love testing! Argh!
Notice, that at no time did Exchange have an issue with SP1. Everything worked, with SCW and the firewall turned on or off. I have other test machines that everything works on Exchange and Windows with SP1 (these are not Dell machines, yes Help and Support is installed and working nicely).
Ok, SP1 is finally uninstalled. No issues after the uninstall and Help and Support is now magically back. Let’s go for take 2 and this time it better work or I am calling India, er Dell support!
Take 2 – I install Windows Server 2003 SP1 on a Dell 2650. Before the install everything is looking good. J After the install…CRAP! You guessed it, Help and Support is gone.
Ok, I am calling Dell Support to get to the bottom of this. Texas support answered, cool, it’s good to be in America. It appears I am the first to call in with this issue. Not surprising since 4.4 has only been out a few days, though it’s not great of news for me. They ask me to run a Dell System Extraction Tool (DSET) and MSPREPORTs for Exchange. I do and send the files off to Dell. Ok, blew past that level of support, I am being escalated.
Dell has had me try several things, though none of them seem to be working...
Dell support fixed it with these steps:
Remove the .cab files from the Packagestore folder, and then rebuild the original Help and Support Center:
a. Click Start, click Run, type "cmd" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK to open a command prompt.
Type "net stop helpsvc" (without the quotation marks), and then press ENTER.
b. Type "cd /d windir\pchealth\helpctr" (without the quotation marks), where windir is the Windows folder, and then press ENTER.
c. Type "rd packagestore /s /q" (without the quotation marks), and then press ENTER.
d. Type "cd binaries" (without the quotation marks), and then press ENTER.
e. Type "start /w helpsvc /svchost netsvcs /regserver /install" (without the quotation marks), and then press ENTER.
f. If any of the following processes are running, stop them: helpsvc.exe helphost.exe helpctr.exe
To stop a process, right-click the taskbar, and then click Task Manager. Click the Processes tab, click the process you want to stop,
and then click End Process.
g. At the command prompt, type "net start helpsvc" (without the quotation marks), and then press ENTER.
Bam! It was just that simple... Now to test a second Dell computer... Wish me luck...

Even with 4.4, Dell does not provide a seamless update to OM 4.4, you still have to uninstall any previous version before you install Open Manager 4.4
