Do not upgrade Exchange - at least not in my world

I hate the word upgrade. Always have. Always will. Nothing good ever comes about when a customer uses that word. Which will you trust more, an upgraded machine or a freshly installed one? Why? Probably for some of the same reasons that I have. The upgrades always have bloat, old .dlls, system files, program files, REGISTRY entries, etc. Have you ever uninstalled ANY program from Windows (from any Vendor) and then checked the registry for remnants? What did you find? 99.999% of the time, little hints of the old, now removed, program still exists. When you upgrade, guess what remains 99.999% of the time. Which do you think is faster - a fresh install or an upgraded machine? You did not have to think long about that one did you? After an upgrade, what is the size of the Windows directory, or the registry. I will lay good money that the upgrade is a lot larger then the fresh install.

Ok, enough about the reasons why I hate that dreadful word. You say you are on a very tight budget, you can't afford the new software purchase you just made, let alone new hardware to run it on. You are forced into doing an upgrade. Forced? By who? We always have choices, let me outline a few:

Now don't laugh, I am serious here. Depending on how many mailboxes and the total size you maybe able to move to a temporary Windows 2003, Exchange 2003 server. I just recently did this for a client upgrade. Why? Because I refuse to do upgrades. Period. I built a temporary 2003/2003 and joined the org. Moved all the mailboxes over. Killed the current environment. Built from scratch the old server(s). Joined the org. Moved mailbox back. It all depends on the size(s) of the store(s) and number of users. It also helps if you have control of the total environment, like DNS (for MX record moves) and AD. Is this perfect? No. Its not HA, but neither is only having one node. It also exposes you to 2003/2003 before you cluster it. Just something to think about.

Don't have a spare server or high end desktop machine? Have you purchased any new machines lately? Or you just about to? Desktops are getting faster everyday and so are in the internal disk drives. You can even work with a local hardware reseller to demo a machine for a weekend. Believe me, many would jump at the chance to "prove" that their hardware can cut the mustard. I am always honest on what I will be doing with the hardware and when the demo will be over. It's a great no-cost solution.

In the world today, we have lots choices. In my little world, I never choose to upgrade. Never. If your world is different, comment. If you still go the upgrade route, good luck with that.

Update: Edited to fix typos, thanks to Russ Kaufmann for pointing them out. I really need to either post when fully awake or pay an editor :)

I am speaking at TechEd 2005 - USA

MCT's worldwide had 12 sessions to choose from and 5 were choosen. If you are an MCT, and attending TechEd, here is my session information:

TE02: What Every MCT Needs to Know about Clustering and High Availability Cluster

Abstract

High availability. Fault Tolerant. What do these terms mean to you? Do you cringe when a student asks about them? Do you know the difference between Component Load Balancing, Network Balancing, and Application/Service Clustering? Can you cluster DNS? WINS? DHCP? IIS? DCs? If you get these question in every class you teach, come to this session to learn the answers that your student seek. Learn about these from a MCT that lives and breathes this stuff.

Three key things attendees will learn during this presentation

  • You will learn to define clustering, high availability, and dozens of terms
  • You will learn to understand which high availability solution is correct for any student question
  • You will learn what you need to teach any course that covers anything remotely concerning clustering.

Thank you to all the MCTs that voted for my session.

Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1

Notes from my field testing:

I have it on 5 machines at this point.

All 5 are behaving perfectly.

On all 5 I ran the new Security Configuration Wizard (SCW) which locks the machine down. Disables unneeded services.

When you run the SCW, it turns on and configures the firewall. This is the same product that comes with XP – SP2. In fact, a lot of SP1 looks and acts like XP – SP2, which should not surprise you.

When you run the SCW on a DC, be careful, our test environment got messed up by it. If you select:

If you check - Computers that have not been configured to use NTLMv2 authentication – then no one can long in. Not even a Windows Server 2003 – SP1 machine, unless you have set that PREVIOUSLY via a Group Policy Object (which I had not in my test network). So, make sure to uncheck it when you hit this screen. DOH. That one had me for 10-15 minutes J

You can always roll back and undo the SCW, it’s an XML file. Very user friendly.

SSL is supposed to be faster, though I have not tested that yet.

Windows Server 2003 SP1 SSL Improvements – I have been playing with it on our test boxes, so far so good. This article tells about a way to gain faster SSL!!!!

size=2>http://blogs.technet.com/windowsserver/archive/2005/04/04/403303.aspx

I only have it on one Exchange 2003 server, I applied the Hotfix and I was good to go.

I have also started testing SQL 2000 – SP3a, MIIS, IIS, DNS, WINS, etc.

Remember you can install SP1 with little or no trouble. I see problems when you run SCW and don’t fully understand the machine you configuring. Turing the firewall on and making sure it right is not an easy task (if the wizard is wrong).

I did notice a minor pain in the butt. Go link from event message no longer work or link back to MS properly: (only if you run the SCW, and oddly this is even with the Help and Support service still active).

Clicking the link above does nothing. That sucks, because I am seeing different things in the logs now. Like the above DCOM errors. I know why I am getting this error, the SCW turned off DCOM J

DOH! I guess SCW needs to tell the event log not log an error on something it turned off.

In case anyone is wondering, all of the above have been properly reported to Microsoft J
