Seems to reason that they would since it's specifically being designed for a PC DVR app. Being that they already make you "buy" their HD DVR just to lease it charging a DVR fee to use MCE would be along the same lines...

This is getting to be overly frustrating and I think DirecTV should just get the damn card to market. If their smart, they won't make the same mistake of requiring their customers to purchase a $3,000 machine to tune HD TV. CableCard will fail for this reason. DirectTV should capitalize on this and make it more cost effective. They would surley capture the majority of the MCE market. Years have gone by and this whole DRM/Copy protected content crap needs to get worked out. I'm sick of waiting and waiting and waiting. Get with the program and give the consumer what they want. Dish or DirectTV, whoever gets there first will get/keep me as a customer.

The same applies to Linux. Any company is free to attempt to add CableCARD support, the OCUR documents are free downloads on CableLabs website. However, the openness of Linux likely means you will never see Cable or Sat support. It just can't meet the rules and regulations that have alrady been set. A closed Linux solution will work just fine (most CableCARD HDTV's use an embedded Linux distro), however you don't want a closed solution (pre packaged, Linux based system).

Another point that I find irritating is the only platform that seems to be able get these add-in cards is Microsoft's media center, what about Apple? or Linux based pvr's/media software platforms? I want to use open source software because I am not a fan of microsoft when it comes to watching TV. This is just another way of locking in the user to a proprietary platform.

If DISH or Direct TV would stop screwing around then I would gladly but a reasonable priced vista box from either one to get the job done. It's like they don't want customers or something and rather drag there feet. DRM feh, it's already out there anyway just let it go you idiots and bring a product to market for god sake.
