If we buy a retail upgrade version of Vista and then purchase a family discount license, do we have to have two copies of a previous version of Windows? Or just the one?

I think I answered my own question: "Before completing the order online, customers will need to enter one valid full or upgrade Windows Vista Ultimate key from their retail boxed product." the key phrase being "retail boxed product."

I think the page will go live a little closer to the 30th, when Vista actually goes on sale.

I think the link for family offer is bad - it redirects you to the main Vista home page.

Will this family offer only apply if you have one license of Ultimate? That seems kind of extreme - how many people will be buying Ultimate for their home PC(s) as opposed to Home Premium?
