First, I feel I should say this. I am an Xbox MVP.

With that said, Ben, in terms of keeping your music and pictures synced, you do not need to use media center. You can simply use Windows Media Connect, or WMP11.

The Xbox360 has been streaming media for over a year now.

While not perfect (e.g. no PVR functions), Apple TV is quite compelling for iPod/iTunes ecosystem users.

The built-in hard disk is a good idea, because it allows me to switch off my computer when not in use, and still watch my photos or video on my tv or music on my sound system.

I have a 1080 "Full HD" flat-tv (Sony Bravia). I wonder, would I notice any difference in quality of photos between 720 and 1080 resolution?

I must say I'm pretty disappointed. Just as with the 360 they only support their own formats and are unlikely to allow third party extension of this.

So yet again I'm 'stuck' using XBMC on my original Xbox.

Thanks for the info Chris, but iTunes is install on my Mini in another room and mcetunes doesn't work with Extenders which is how I connect to my Media Center to my TV.

Ben: In terms of keeping music in-sync between MCE and iTunes, you might want to check out MCE Tunes (http://www.mcetunes.com/). There are also a few other plug-ins at TGB for keeping iTunes synced with WMP/MCE.

I ordered one, sure it could be better, but what couldn't be?

It is smaller than the 360, quieter and doesn't have a loaf of bread as power brick.

Not to mention it works with my Mac.

BTW I have a Media Center PC and an XBOX360 and don't use the MC Extender functionality because there is no good way to keep my music and photos synced between my iPod and my MCE.

We won't know for sure if it sucks till it is in our hands and we have a chance to check it out.

Jacqui: Is the USB 2.0 for external storage?

Apple Employee: No. You cannot add external storage to the AppleTV. The USB port is there solely for service reasons.

The only comments ringing true is the ease of use quiet operation. However, a device that does ALL the things that iTV does and more is the XBox 360. It allows you to buy movies and view them. Is pretty quiet and looks good. And of course it will allow you to view recordings on your MCE box!

True AppleTV sucks. But as a glimpse of their vision you can see that Apple will pose a huge problem for MCE. AppleTV looks nice, looks easy to use, and appears to be very quiet. All things that females (who have veto power over HTPC decisions) value.

When you consider that MSFT really hasn't been able to deliver any new MCE features since ATSC (CableCard is a joke until you can build it yourself, and as you've noted Windows Home Server is a joke), then you have to start wondering: is there room for Apple to catch up, and quickly?

My bet: as soon as AppleTV puts a device out that can handle VOB (DVD), then they will be almost at parity with MCE, especially if the device can stream from Windows boxes.

The iTV will be 299 – does not record but does allow for streaming and playing videos you buy. This is not much different then Akimbo or MovieBeam – they both have settop boxes to watch pre bundled videos that they sell ala-cart.

I think Apple Inc., is taking a Microsoft approach to this one. Build 1.0 and get it into the supply chain - hype it and make it cool. But where they differ is that it will be CRAZY easy to use. Though I think MCE is easy - others think all the options are too complicated.

Then they will add recording with USB devices, in 2.0 and on.
