HP Releases MediaSmart HDTV Extender Update

HP has released the Media Center Extender firmware update for MediaSmart HDTV owners.  If yours hasn’t checked for updates automatically, you might want to force an update check to see if it is available.

HP also has their MediaSmart HDTV Extender webpage up for troubleshooting and instructions.   Remember that you need Windows Vista Home Premium or Ultimate to take advantage of this feature.  In addition you need Windows Vista SP1 or KB938126 (x64).  Vista SP1 highly suggested instead of just the update patch as it has been known to improve Extender performance.

Update: Press Release was issued today, read it at eHomeUpgrade.

Chris, if you are at the MVP Summit perhaps you could ask the Media Extender team about what they are doing to improve boot time and menu performance.  Is this purely an issue of hardware not being quite up to the task?  Or are there further software optimizations that are being looked into?  Thanks and fun.

Are you saying there are boot time and menu perf issues on your HP TV? You should not assume the performance of one OEM's device is indicitive of the performance of another OEM's device.

I'm saying that SP1 is suggested over just the Extender patch because it has improved other Extenders.  Whether it improves the performance of the HP, I don't know.

Are you suggesting that people should not be running SP1 and instead should just install the Extender patch on Vista RTM for an optimal setup?  I know there are not supposed to have been changes in SP1 to increase Extender performance specifically, but given the network and remote desktop changes it seems to have improved others performance.  Given that the changes are not specific to Extender, it would seem like a best practice to ensure SP1 is in use.

Everyone should upgrade their PCs to SP1.

I was responding to JohnCz's comment about perf and input issues. I believe he was talking about the issues people have reported with the Linksys and assuming they would also exist on the HP TV.
