Niveus Media Releases Companion Basic for Free

As Tim Cutting noted at CES with Ian Dixon, they are releasing their Companion Basic software for free to all Vista Media Center users.  Companion Basic supports My Music, My Pictures, and My Remote but doesn’t include Extender control support or TV functionality.

You can install the Companion software on any Windows XP, Windows Vista, or UMPC machine (touchscreen or laptop being the best options), the Niveus Control Server Basic installs on Windows Vista only.

To download Companion Basic you will need to register for a free account at Niveus Media’s new Companion forum.

Really like this. However I wish they would sell a full blown version to use with extenders also.

The only thing I don't like is the remote. Just a picture of a remote, should be a nice touch interface instead.

What does it do?

Why is this software even newsworthy? It just enables one PC to access the music and photos on another PC, just like any networking software does.

Same reason I've posted about nearly dozens of other software remotes and tools to share content in a more Softsled-ish way.

I'm not sure why you would complain about something that it free.  If it doesn't interest you, don't use it.

I'm going to check it out, I'm still not clear if it's a remote control, or a softled type app, if it's softled type, then if it performs decently....great it's just what I'm looking for.
