Details on the New Internet TV Plug-in for Media Center

Engadget got some additional details on the new Internet TV plug-in that Microsoft will launch later this month.  This is a great move for Microsoft.  One of the advantages of Media Center is the ability to bring video content from different sources.  The problem has been that several of the companies currently providing on demand content are charging for it and most have been less than successful in my view.

The Internet TV plug-in will provide ad supported content (from major providers I assume), but will only be available in the US. The categories shown on the beta plug-in include Sports, Entertainment, News, Top Picks, Music and Movies.  See the gallery at Engadget for a few more photos.

Stick around because later this month more details will be announced at DigitalLife in New York City.

US only as usual!

Just like HDTV broadcasts, sports and Xbox Live Marketplace.

Making US only features and leaving important basic feature out for other regions does NOT impress me.

I understand that there are licensing and things that Microsoft have little control over. But still, most new broadcast related features in WMC are US only. And other regions are STILL waiting for basic functions.

I've been waiting to be able to view free terrestial HDTV broadcasts (DVB-T/AVC in Europe) for a long time now. I've been waiting to view encrypted channels for even longer (hacks does not count).

Others are waiting for DVB-C and DVB-S support (still, hacks does not count). These are old BASIC standards not supported by WMC!!!

I doubt anything will happen to TVTonic.  It will stay right where it is.

Isn't "Movies Guide" also US only?

Maybe Microsoft should divide WMC into two products...

This article says it all:

Netflix support would be pretty cool.

I'm not sure that article is relating to this.  That article is talking about Silverlight and how it could be used to launch different Internet TV applications.  That's not exactly the same as what is likely coming for Media Center.
