Dell Launches XPS 410 with CableCARD

I was out of town when Dell launched their first CableCARD PC, so here is a bit of catch-up on Dell’s first entry into the market.

The XPS 410 was chosen as expected, and unlike HP and Sony they actually offer single or dual CableCARD tuners.  Even better, the Digital Cable Tuners will cost you $236 each, which is pretty good.  However, unlike HP it doesn’t include an ATSC tuner in the package (at least, not that I could tell.)  Another first for a top tier OEM is the option to upgrade to Vista Ultimate.

The base specs include a Core 2 Duo E6320, 2GB of RAM, a NVIDIA 8600GT and 250GB hard drive.  And now the interesting bits.  First, it includes a Blu-ray drive with no option for HD DVD or even to leave the Blu-ray drive out for a standard DVD burner.  Second, they want to include a monitor with the PC.  However, at this point that can be hacked by selecting "I will select a 27in wide flat panel monitor from the large display section" and then simply don’t select one.

Using that monitor hack, the final price for a single tuner machine is $1435.  Not too bad at all, but it would be nice to officially be able to exclude the monitor and Blu-ray drive to knock that price down even more.

Anyone tempted by the Dell XPS 410, or are you still looking for something different.

I'm still looking/waiting.....I want a basic dual-tuner system. No BluRay or HD DVD drives, just a DVD recorder. All in a nice HTPC case. Can't be that difficult.

The move away from cablecard 1.0 scares me still. I want to have a clear upgrade path.

I would buy one this second if I could get it without the Blu-ray drive. The system would be going in the basement - since you can't remote DVDs (much less HD-DVD or Blu-ray), it's a $500 cd reader option.

Is it possible to move the blu-ray drive to an external enclosure?

I'm confused...I thought the XPS 7** series already supported CABLECARD.  I just bought won udner this assumption and await its delivery!  Can anyone clue me in and reassure me that my 710 with the 650 Theather Pro from ATI will be ok?  Thanks.

# re: Dell Launches XPS 410 with CableCARD

No, the ATI Theather Pro 650 is an NTSC/ATSC tuner.  It is not a CableCARD tuner.

Ahhh I was misinformed!  Will the 710 support cablecard if I buy the Wonder Tuner?  Thanks...

# re: Dell Launches XPS 410 with CableCARD

No, and you can't buy the CableCARD tuners standalone anyway.  You will want to return that 710 and get a 410 if you want CableCARD.

# re: Dell Launches XPS 410 with CableCARD

Man o man, what a mess.  I bought the 710 spur of the moment thanks to a 10% discount incentive at a kiosk.  Sorry to bombard the thread, I'm just suprised that the higher end 7 series has been left out.  I am planning on using my cable box to feed the tuner the corrrect signal, but cannot believe I won't be able to pop in a CABLECARD in the future.  I was under the impression that VISTA, loaded on a new system, would support CABLECARD!  Assuming I could find a way to get the tuners in the future, what are your thoughts?

# re: Dell Launches XPS 410 with CableCARD

Vista can, but only if the PC was specially built for it.  CableLabs requires this.  For more, check out the CableCARD FAQ (msmvps.com/.../954764.aspx)

Bottom line: That PC will not work.

God am I really bummed.  What do you think of my using the cablebox to act as my CABLECARD?  Do you think the setup will work?

# re: Dell Launches XPS 410 with CableCARD

It will work fine, but it will not be HD.  Your only HD option with that card is ATSC (Over the Air) local broadcasts.

# re: Dell Launches XPS 410 with CableCARD

Sorry again for the onslaught of posts (the contact link seems to be down).

I thought I had thoroughly researched this topic, but learned thanks to your site that I am horribly wrong.  At first I thought the ATI Wonder TV was an external version of the Theater PRO for less powerful systems, hence it being offered with the 410 and not on the 7s.  I also thought, having read several blogs, that any system built after the VISTA release would support CableCard.

Lastly, I thought the PRO would be able to show the HD content from my cablebox.  All in all, I am stuck with a brand new system that doesn't do what I want it to.  Could you make any suggestions?  Will the higher end XPS systems soon support CABLECard?  If so, could I try and return mine and wait it out?  I bought the 30" dell monitor that needs the duel video card support, something the 410 cannot handle.

Man o man, what do I do!!!

Thanks for any help you can provide.

# re: Dell Launches XPS 410 with CableCARD

Return the machine to Dell and order a 410 with the CableCard tuners. That's all you can do.

Not sure where you read all that erroneous info, but it's been a well known fact for a while now that only specially configured machines sold directly from the manufacturer will support CableCard.

# re: Dell Launches XPS 410 with CableCARD

Ok, thanks for the advice.  A few last questions if you don't mind: does the 410 have Cablecard 2.0?  If yes, is it two way, and if no, when is that supposed to be ready?

Lastly, are their plans to bring CABLECARD to the 720?  I would like to be able to use the 30inch monitor and need the dual card option.  Thanks so much!

# re: Dell Launches XPS 410 with CableCARD

No, OCURs don't support two-way communication or CableCARD 2.0 platform support.  There will be new tuners (aka hardware) that support this at a later date.  Click the CableCARD tag on the sidebar and then find "What's Next for CableCARD and Vista"

Even if there are plans to add CableCARD support to the 710 (which are not known outside of Dell) you would not be able to upgrade your existing one to support CableCARD tuners.

# re: Dell Launches XPS 410 with CableCARD

So the 410 is still based on 1.0?  And Dell and other manufacturers want you to plunk down big $ for a system that will soon be out of date?

Maybe I should keep my current order.

I just got off the phone with Dell and no one seems to have any idea about CABLECARD.  Chris, is there a better way to reach you...I am having a frantic moment as I sit and decide whether or not to accept delivery of my order.  It sounds as if this technology is still in need of a lot of work...should I be basing my purchase on it?  Especially if I have Time Warner, which means 1.0 will really stink on a 410?  Thanks...

# re: Dell Launches XPS 410 with CableCARD

The OCUR (the ATI Digital Cable Tuner) are one-way devices.  It has less to do with the exact PC then it does with the tuners themselves.

Read the article I pointed you to above and it explains everything.  There is way too much information for me to try and explain it all in a comment, but yes the tuners themselves (which can be replaced) can be considered to be out-of-date soon (along with all the other CableCARD devices out there in PCs or not).

Support for these machines will take a while, if you call try and use the wording that they do on the sales page.  If they list the tuner as an OCUR, say OCUR.  If it says Digital Cable Tuner, say Digital Cable Tuner.

Don't accept the order, do your best to send it back.  No matter how you cut it that 710 is not going to work with CableCARD.

Thanks for the note on the contact form, I didn't know it was broken.  If you need to contact me please shoot me an e-mail at chris (at) christopherlanier (dot) com.

# re: Dell Launches XPS 410 with CableCARD

Has anyone actually gotten this system, and hooked it up?  All posts I have read basically say there has to be 'someone' who has the expertise - come to your house and make sure everything is working properly.  Also, there were many instance when 1 or both of the CableCard tuners did not work.  I have not talked with my cable provider (Time Warner) to even see what kind of support they offer.  Any suggestions because I am seriously liking the Vista interface, and I ready to buy a good HD tv.  I really want to make this an all-in-one entertainment center.

Buying it today ... I'll let you know. I may end up sticking with analog TV signal for a little bit, but I'm getting the new tuners to go digital/high def as soon as possible.

# re: Dell Launches XPS 410 with CableCARD

Just started to look at the Dell (XPS 410) and HP (m8100y) offerings. Pretty interesting, but sad to see you can't get a real bare-bones config (or even the tuner by itself; even tried eBay :) ).

I have Digital Cable from Comcast, and their FAQ lists no fees for the first CableCard. They didn't mention anything about taking away my settop box (for the OnDemand, PayPerView, etc programmings).

Anyone know what's the difference between the Vista version Dell ships and the usual one? They had the wordings "...with Digital Cable support" or something like that. Can I get the lowest version of Vista available (premiumn I think) and just wipe it off and install the Ultimate version I have? (I.e. would I still have the CableCard support)

# re: Dell Launches XPS 410 with CableCARD

The install of Vista they use just has the key for activate the OCUR included.  If you want to install Ultimate, just do an upgrade after you get the machine.

They can't sell barebones systems because of CableLabs regulations.  It must be a functional system.

# re: Dell Launches XPS 410 with CableCARD

Well, I have an XPS 410 on my table, 2 external ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuners, and the darned thing doesn't work. MCE won't recognize the tuners.

I'm in my 2nd hour with Dell support, I have confidence, er rather hope, that this will work ... but no success to date.

# re: Dell Launches XPS 410 with CableCARD

No luck. 3+ hours on technical support. Lack of sleep, and nobody knows what the problem is. I called customer service to give up and ship the whole thing back, but they talked me in to trying a whole new system in exchange. I'll let you know in 3 to 5 days if I have any better luck with the new one. If this one doesn't work, does anyone have advice on what to do?

# re: Dell Launches XPS 410 with CableCARD

I got the 2nd try from Dell yesterday. I've always had good luck with them at my work with standard corporate setups (I'm IT Manager at a Law School so get about 30 new machines every year from them), but they are not coming through here at all.

The replacement computer came with only one tuner instead of two as I had in my original order. In going through the set up, it has become clear that the XPS410 they sent does not support Cable Card tuners. They sent me the friggin' wrong computer!

I'm disgusted. I'm going to return this machine tomorrow and wait another year.
