MCE Video Encoder - Encoding & Streaming DivX to Xbox 360

MCE Video Encoder | MCE Video Encoder (Via eHomeUpgrade) is a Windows application that controls encoding and streaming of all video files, including DivX and Xvid.

The application also includes a set of add-ins for Windows Media Center Addition 2005 that controls the MCE Video Encoder application.

Therefore, this allows you to not only set up and control video streams from your Windows Media Center PC, but also control and view the streams from a Media Center Extender and even an Xbox 360.

MCE Video Encoder has the following features:

  • Start and Stop Streaming from Windows Client and MCE Add-in,
  • Pause and Unpause Streaming from Windows Client and MCE Add-in
  •  Rewind and Fast Forward the Streaming (by configurable amount) from Windows Client and MCE Add-in
  • Play the stream from MCE Add-in
  •  View Progress of video encoding in Windows Client
  •  Remote control MCE Video Encoder through Windows Messages and/or Command Files.

Chris,
Will this work just on Windows XP too or only on Media Center edition OS?
Thanks

I wonder if they can get this to support h.264 as well. We have been posting all of our HD videos as h.264 1080p streams, and it would be great if there was a way to get MCE and/or an XBox 360 to be able to understand them.

As it sits now MS wants me to encode everything as WM9, and I simply don't have enough time to wait for the h.264 files in 1080p, 720p, 480p as well as WM9 in 1080p, 720p, 480p to encode. One universal format would be fantastic, and this seems like it could be a step in the right direction.

It will only work with Media Center, it's not going to enable Windows XP Pro/Home to stream video to an Xbox 360.

I should work with H.264 as long as the correct decoders are installed (I assume). It likely just uses DirectShow, so in theroy it would work fine. I don't know if you are going to want to transcode a ton of 1080p AVC content to WMV9 to stream. It's still just like encoding it twice, but if you use the source (not the H.264 copy), it would give you better video quality.

Depending on how you look at it, both H.264 and WMV9 (VC-1) could be considered a "universal" format. Both are going to be around for some time now (since both are a part of HD DVD/Blu-ray) and both are going to be used to IPTV/Sat in the near future. Encode in whichever format works with the devices in question. WMV9 with the right settings can match what H.264 can in most cases. And H.264 can match what WMV9 can in most cases.

Have any of you experienced problems with this application and the new 6.2 release of Divx?

I cant get it to work. i found a walkthrough all the steps and it encodes and plays the stream but nothing happens on the 360. am i just being dense. am i somehow supposed to initiate viewing the stream on the 360. as it is the video only plays in the mediacenter which it would do anyway without the mce encoder. any ideas?
