BD-J vs. iHD and Mandatory Managed Copy

iHD less expensive than Blu-ray alternative, thanks to Vista, says HP | In addition to HP's view change on Blu-ray vs. HD DVD they are also interested in iHD vs. BD-J(ava) and Mandatory Managed Copies as part of AACS.

(The company does have an oft-confused employee by the same name, but who works in another division.) Based on his understanding of the subject, which comes from Microsoft, Lanier told us AACS will have a mandatory copy provision. But depending on how BD+ and ROM Mark are implemented by the BDA, Lanier told us, "they have the potential to render the ability for the consumer to make a managed copy unusable."”

Quote: ”In an e-mail to TG Daily, Lanier wrote, "BDA members have been quick to note that HD DVD and Blu-ray both use AACS, and thus both will offer managed copies. However, until the BDA finishes the spec, or releases some public information about how BD+/ROM Mark are implemented with AACS, the ability for the consumer to actually make a managed copy is up in the air."”

# re: BD-J vs. iHD and Mandatory Managed Copy

I think it's important to point out that iHD is NOT cheaper than BD-J for stand-alone disc players, which is by far the largest target market for next-gen video standards. Instead, iHD represents a greater development effort than BD-J. HP can leverage the iHD capabilities built into Vista, but can Pioneer's next gen set top player? Nope.

I understand the appeal of a relatively platform-neutral standard like iHD when compared to BD-J's appreach, which essentially says that the platform IS the standard. But let's be honest and admit that iHD is only cheaper for a very small slice of the next-gen pie.
