"Windows Media Technologies Is Incompatible..." Information.

It's getting narrowed down! Currently it appears that wmploc.dll in C:\Windows\System32 is the file causing hell for some users while trying to WMP 10. The solution might be rather simple, navigate to C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 and copy wmploc.dll to C:\Windows\System32. Now, run the WMP 10 installer again and see what you get.

I lost WMP9 after a failed installation of WMP10 and had the above message after trying to reinstall WMP9. The fix worked and I am now happily using WMP9 again!
Thank you.

# re: "Windows Media Technologies Is Incompatible..." Information.

I navigated to C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 and it didn't have a wmploc.dll file there for me to exchange with the one in C:\Windows\System32 . Is there a place where I can get the file from on the net?

# re: "Windows Media Technologies Is Incompatible..." Information.

You can get it off your XP CD-ROM. I would not suggest downloading random files from the web.

You guys are the best. I was having the same problem, I tried your solution, and Media Player 10 finally Re-installed. Now if only I was not getting this messege.Windows Media Player encountered an unknown error. This can occur when another program or operating system component encounters a problem but does not communicate the nature of the problem to the Player.

It is now....Thanks Chris for this awesome and helpful service you provide!

# re: "Windows Media Technologies Is Incompatible..." Information.

I don't really think I can explain it much more. You navigate to ServicePackFiles in Windows Explorer, copy the file (There are about 4 ways to do that), then navigate to System32 and paste it (about 4 ways to paste also)

# re: "Windows Media Technologies Is Incompatible..." Information.

Chris,
Muchas Gracias, Gam Sa Ham Ni Da, (Korean), Ari Ga do (Japanese)...
I finally figured it out. And now enjoying the music. For those like me, novice, I explain here how I did it. Right-Click <Start> Click <Explore> Open <Local Disk (C)>
Scroll down to and Click <Windows>Click <ServicePackFiles> and then <i386> and then find <wmploc.dll> Right-Click and choose <Copy>
Now go further down to <System32> and Right-Click once again and choose <Paste>
You are done. Now you can download and instal Media Player 10 w/o problem.
Enjoy.. Thanks again Chris. Dan

# re: "Windows Media Technologies Is Incompatible..." Information.

Chris,

I've got most of the way there using your fix... the installer will at least run now without that damn "windows media technologies" error message. When I run the installer though, it extracts all the .dll's then the blue box with the license agreement comes up, then it installs, and runs through up to 100% then the next window says:

"It was not possible to complete setup. Windows Media Player 10 was not installed. To update windows, run Windows Media Player 10 Setup again."

Which I've done repeatedly to no avail. Any ideas where I could go from here? Thanks a lot,

Tom

# re: "Windows Media Technologies Is Incompatible..." Information.

Neither of the wmploc.dll files in C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 nor the one on my WinXP PRO CD worked when I copied them to C:\Windows\System32 folder.

BUT I will tell you what did work for me!

I took the MP10Setup.exe file that I downloaded from microsoft, right clicked on it, clicked 'Extract files...' which extracted all the files in MP10Setup.exe to a folder called C:\MP10Setup\ (or wherever you chose to extract) then I took the wmploc.dll from that folder and placed it in C:\Windows\System32 then I went back to MP10Setup.exe and double left clicked it and everything installed fine! =)

# "Windows Media Technologies Is Incompatible..." strikes again!

Chris,

I found this blog when searching on a similar error message ... only mine was a completely different problem.

I have a Win2003 server that backs itself up to DVD+RW disc nightly ... using Roxio DVD Creator 6's Drag to Disk packet drivers.
On last Tuesday backups came to a halt beause the DVD drive was "locked". After numerous reboots and trials I determeined that the automatic installation of Win2003 SP1, which included WMP10, hosed the packet drivers.
Updating to the lastest patches for v6 from Roxio's website just caused me to have BSOD when doing a shutdown.

I removed the Roxio software and uninstalled the DVD+RW drive's drivers, after a reboot I cleaned the registry of all Roxio references and nuked the lost folders.
Another reboot and the BSODs were gone and the drive's drivers had come back automatically. (FYI, I submitted a memory dump with the error report when I had the first BSOD)

When trying a clean install of the Roxio I got the error mentioning the wrong version of the "Microsoft Media Technologies" ... but I let it finish installing anyway.

I've checked the folders mentioned above and I have the WMP10 version in both places.

It appears that the packet writting (RW Disc) functionality is working again, but if it still fails I may try to dump WMP10 and setup WMP9 to see if that works, if that fails I'll roll back SP1.

Thanks for the tip,
Scott

# re: "Windows Media Technologies Is Incompatible..." strikes again

I'm back again ...

Even after I beat the system's insistance on restoring the wmploc.dll back to the WMP10 version at every reboot (I had to rename avery occurance on the drive and copy the old one to the same place) it still didn't fix my problem.

So I rolled-back Windows Server 2003 SP1, after that the DVD+RW disc was fully usable again and I've had no problems writing the last weeks worth of backups out to discs and getting this weeks caught up to.

To bad I can't get SP1 WITHOUT Media Player at all ... I really don't know why MS insists on having end user apps install by default on a server platform!

# re: "Windows Media Technologies Is Incompatible..." Information.

Argh!!! All these happy, sorted people and I'm still battling the ****** thing. When I try to copy wmploc.dll (which is already there - ie not missing) into C:/Windows/system32 I get the following error message: "Cannot copy wmploc.dll: Data Error (Cyclic Redundancy Check)" I have copied all the wmp .dll files that *will* copy into Sys32 but I still cannot install WMP10...or 9, or 8, or any!!!

This is driving me insane - IE6 crashes every time I hit a website with a .wmv file embedded, I can't install Adobe After Effects (just get the same error message about incompatibility half way through the install process)

Any ideas? Anyone??!! Before I lose all my hair!

# re: "Windows Media Technologies Is Incompatible..." Information.

I am having a problem that a few others are having but no one has yet responded to this particular problem.

I use the fix, install Media Player 10, the install says 100% complete and then get this message:

"It was not possible to complete setup. Windows Media Player 10 was not installed. To update windows, run Windows Media Player 10 Setup again."

So I have reinstalled the program and get the same message everytime.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

# re: "Windows Media Technologies Is Incompatible..." Information.

Hey

This is maddening. I dont have a servicepackfile folder, so i went to dlldump.com (as one poster suggested) and downloaded another copy of wmploc.dll. When I try to copy this new wmploc.dll into my system32 folder, it asks me if i would like to replace the old wmploc.dll file. I say yes, and the new wmploc.dll is copied over. I stare at this file, and lo and behold, right before my very eyes, the file turns back into the old wmploc.dll (I know because the old one was 3.21mb, and the new one is 2.8mb). Its absolutely rediculous, the file just morphs into the old one.

So i try deleting the old .dll, and lo and behold, 5 seconds later, it reappears. WTF?

please help

# re: "Windows Media Technologies Is Incompatible..." Information.

Worked for my problem also. It all started on a problem that I was having with WMP10. I uninstalled first the Windows Media Player from the Add / Remove Windows Components tool. Then I tried to reinstall WMP10, but the installer said that I already have a newer version installed and exited. The I "DELETED" all the windows media player components from "C:\Windows\System32 and c:\Program Files\Windows Mediaplayer folder. Then I removed all the register markings of WMPL*.*. After that I tried to install MP10Setup.exe and it gave me the error shown in the topic. Then I followed the solutions shown here. Extracted the MP10Setup.exe packet and then I copied all the *.dll files to System32 folder and doubleclicked the MP10Setup.exe and it installed smoothly. If someone is trying to do the same, do not restart windows if you dont have WMP10 installed properly.
