present on the Entity Framework.

We haven't done many LiveMeeting events, yet, but it is a way to reach some very high profile presenters both from overseas and interstate - so we might see more of these.
April is going to prove to be a busy month as we'll most likely have two events. The first was yesterday, Zain Naboulsi's Entity Framework presentation - and then again on the 20th of April with Dave Glover.

Dave will present on Line of Business applications with Silverlight 3 - a very data centric presentation.

April also has a bigger event on the schedule - the 20th of April sees the Tech Summerfest week of training bonanza kick off.

The recording from last nights event on the Entity Framework is available for download.

PSSUG: Business Intelligence – what’s it all about. 12 Feb 09

The Perth SQL Server User Group is meeting again this February and this time we're bringing a long waited (and much requested) topic.

Business Intelligence - yes, that's right. The topic that's evaded us here in Perth is now going to see the light.

The presentation this time around will also be slightly different than usual - in that we have two presenters, sharing the fun.

Aaron Griffith and Greg Davey from mhm (www.mhm.com.au) are going to show us the ins and outs of Business Intelligence and hopefully answer some of the questions that's been on everybody's lips for a long time. Both of our presenters has extensive experience with BI and are leading mhm's Perth offices.

The presentation will be split in two:

Data Warehouse design methodologies
- Designing a data warehouse dimensional model
- Designing an extract, transform and load (ETL) process for a Data warehouse.

Presenter: Greg Davey, Principal Consultant, mhm

Building a Data Warehouse utilising SQL Server Integration Services
- Transforming and integrating data
- Building type 1 and 2 slowly changing dimensions
- Loading FACT tables

Presenter: Aaron Griffith, Consultant, mhm

As usual we'll be meeting at Fujitsu's offices at Level 15, 191 St Georges Terrace (Corner of St Georges and Mill St).

As last time we'll have pizzas and soft drinks available so be sure to register for the event.

The Perth SQL Server User Group also has a new web site, which will be used for community interaction, sponsorship deals/specials, forums, presenter profiles, newsletters and much much more. So be sure to head on over and register.

PSSUG New Site: www.perthsqlserver.com

I would like to stress that we are still part of the Australian SQL Server User Group - that isn't going to change - the reason for having our own web site is to maintain a more "local" focus as we simply can't compete with the eastern states user groups, who're rolling along at a tremendous rate. We don't have the same high profile, nor are we able to attract the high number of presenters.

That being said, we've had some fantastic presenters in the past - such as notables like Greg Low, Greg Linwood, Peter Ward, Rob Farley, Dave Lean...the list goes on and we will still try to "poach" some of these brilliant minds whenever they pass by Perth.

Lastly, we are (as always) looking for presenters. So if you want to raise your profile and step up, earn the respect of your peers, and present on a topic please contact me (brian.madsen@live.com). Including getting your name out there we'll also provide you with a Presenter Profile on our web site.

"The walk of vision is an exciting new concept whereby fully sighted individuals are invited to walk blindfolded to experience what life without sight might be like."

And here's some info that surprised me - the cost of a Guide Dog.

"35,000 people in WA are blind or vision impaired and guide dogs change the lives of those who have them, but these dogs do not come cheap. Each dog costs approximately $35,000 to train over an 18 month period meaning funding and donations are incredibly important."

I'm always ready to put my hand up when it comes to doing a good deed for the community and i have a great deal of respect for those individuals and corporates that shares that belief as well.

So, when Alan Armstrong put the call out to Fujitsu to support a worthy cause, i was ready to assist with what was needed (even if it meant touching PHP again after all these years). Fujitsu had no problems with me assisting Alan with this and fully supported the initiative.

This isn't the first charity Fujitsu has been supporting and i'm constantly impressed with their ongoing community commitments - lets set a presedence...

So a big thanks goes to

: Mr. Alan Armstrong (Fujitsu) - for the initiative and heart
: Mr. Mark Webb (CEO Kings Park) - for officially starting the walk
: Kings Park board of directors - for providing the Kings Park location
: Digitalis - for hosting the website
: The Blind Association of WA - for the ongoing support

and of course to Fujitsu for dedicating the time and resources that allows us to do what we love doing!

There's plenty of opportunities for you to get involved as well - by participating in the walk, sponsoring the event or by donating to the Blind Association of WA.

Remember, every good deed counts and i think it's important that we show that we're a caring people! With all technologies there is the right way, the wrong way and the grey area in the middle. A lot of the Best Practice areas learnt in ASP.NET can be applied to SharePoint such as: environment configuration; source control; automated build scripts; team development; code manageability; code analysis; and more.

SharePoint also has multiple approaches to achieving the same end functionality and some may seem easy on the surface but are hard to enforce standards and repeatability. Key concepts discussed will include: InfoPath vs. ASP.NET Forms; Site Features vs. Site Templates; SharePoint Designer Workflows vs. Visual Studio Workflows; and more.

Jeremy will present some lessons learnt from real world scenarios and also some key Best Practices to adhere to in your Development Teams.

When and where?

Date

: Wednesday, 29th of October, 2008

Time

: 5:30pm – 7:30pm

Venue

: Cliftons, Australia Place
Corner of St Georges Tce and William St

Cost

: FREE

Again, thanks to Readify for bringing quality content to Perth – and as this low cost…did i say cost??
