Orcas Beta 1 trouble - yes, still having issues...Anti-climatic...
Ok, if frustration needs a face on wikipedia.org, then i think it should display me with a sickening hangover (i know i look like *** when i'm hanging low).
After I had some diagnostics help from some MSFT employees I felt that perhaps Orcas Beta 1 would be worth an attempt - so i happily set out to download the 5Gb installer.
Went down overnight and this evening I was ready to take on Orcas and start the learning curve again.
I half expected the installer to fail on me, not that it had been the problem before, but i was just being very pessimistic about the whole thing, yet nothing happened - the install went through like a dream and I was ready to rock and roll.
.........or so i thought?
I move my mouse slowly towards the shortcut under Programs/Visual Studio 9/devenv.exe - hesitate slightly while i look anxiously at the Resource Monitor, almost dreaming up NGEN and MSCORSVW to lap up my resources again....10 seconds pass by and nothing happens...i gently press the left mouse button and close my eyes.
When i open them again, i have the VS Orcas development environment selector window open in front of me...glory..so far so good...Select "Visual C# Development Environment" and click "Next"...another dialog comes up telling me that it's preparing Visual Studio for first time use...heartbeat is anything but stable now...hyperventilating??
It finishes and Visual Studio loads in the background, i see the main frame window with the dark grey coloured background...it's loading!!!! it really is!!! no smoke, no signals - no sweat!!! a small smile creeps in..I made it!
W R O N G ! ! ! ! !
Shot down like a wounded dog, yapping around the car park looking for cover!!!
Man!!! how anti-climatic is that!! 10-12 times i get this one..i click yes...YES!!!...Y E S FFS!!!!!!! finally it tells me, to my great astonishment that Visual Studio had encountered a problem and it'd just check to see if it could find any fixes for my lil' problem...nopes..nothing..was i surprised? no, not really...am i pissed off?? yes, seriously pissed off!!! I mean, we're at version 9 now...how damn hard is it??? it's not as if the entire foundation of Visual Studio has changed is it? do we have another Vista re-write here on our hands? no of course not...we've smacked some new IDE features into the bundle and wrapped some extensions around the .Net framework.

I locate this at MSFT Connect...same story...sorry..the problem is closed because it can't be reproduced...oh c'mon!!!! How many tried this on? i can tell you that i have absolutely nothing spectacular installed here..i haven't even touched the registry (as i normally do..bad boy!!).
Ok, rant over...i should probably have removed Visual Studio 2005 first + all parts of the .Net framework I have running...just to be sure...
So i'm uninstalling everything i can - down to bare bones..and then i'll try again..but for the rest of the night i'm still going to sulk somewhat severely!
