Guardian Unlimited, article - I hate macs...

Today on Port80, a gentleman (i'm making assumptions here) named MattsFolio posted an absolutely hillarious link to an article, aptly named "I Hate Macs" on the www.guardian.co.uk web site.

Without being too brutal (i firmly believe Charlie Brooker, used reasonable enough verbal force to get his point across), the author of the article, describes his loathing of Macs in a sarcastic and humorous tone.

A few of the comments in the article made me laugh rather loudly as i read it in between compiling and debugging the application i'm currently working on.

"PCs are a bit rubbish yet ultimately lovable, whereas Macs are just smug, preening tossers."

IMHO that's absolutely spot on - i myself hate Macs with a vengeance and i don't see it having any other functionality than as a very pretty (albeit expensive) desktop decoration. Professionally i can't use it since my chosen (and beloved) platform of choice is .Net - yes yes yes, i know, you can now install Windows on a Mac, hell the latest operating systems from Apple are Linux based as well - but seriously, i wouldn't want to go near a Windows based Mac in search for drivers for the multitude (and again, expensive) accessories you can get for the Mac - which generally use a Mac-based Firmware.

As a PC user, the next comment is one of my own favorites.

"Why has this rubbish aspirational ornament only got one mouse button?"

Eventhough i paint myself a fairly handy man around computers, i still dont entirely see the logic of only one mouse-button - admittedly if you only have one finger it would come in handy. So are Macs designed for the amazing minority of people with only one finger or did something just go wrong between the design team and the manufacturing process?

Cue 10 years of nasal bleating from Mac-likers who profess to like Macs not because they are fashionable, but because "they are just better". Mac owners often sneer that kind of defence back at you when you mock their silly, posturing contraptions, because in doing so, you have inadvertently put your finger on the dark fear haunting their feeble, quivering soul - that in some sense, they are a superficial semi-person assembled from packaging;

Again the author paints a pretty picture which has been flashed around quite often enough. I've even heard responses to the question "why are Macs better?" like "They dont crash"...well, that is to say, often - but hell and all the archangels have mercy on your soul IF (or rather WHEN) it crashes, because you need to take it back to the shop where you bought it for them to have a look at it. How about opening the case and having a looksee? uhmmmm...

What?? not only are Macs made for people with only one finger, but for midgets..no adult male can actually get their hands inside this case without stripping it completely apart.

One of the responses/comments to the article said:

"And the reason there are far more games available for PCs than for Macs is because Mac users have better things to do with their time that fannying around getting some unfeasibly-breasted posh totty to another level, while making her flash her *** at the same time, then stropping when their Mum comes in to ask if they want an eggy and some soldiers."

Which is exactly the attitude the author of the article describes...superficial..no tosshead - the reason there's far more games for the PC than for the Mac is simple...there's more PCs in the world than Macs..FAR more that is. Anyways, this guy cracks me up somewhat heavily. another part of his comment said:

"And people who need two buttons on their mouse are like people who need bullbars on their Honda Civics."

No TimFootman (the author of the comment), people need two buttons because it's handy...actually VERY handy. it's not about making do with less, but about giving your users what they want - hence the fact that quite a large number of mice has 3-4-5-6-7 buttons..all handy, within reach (of course if you're a one-fingered Mac users the other buttons might not be that handy afterall).

To round off my little rant - sorry guys, but i couldn't help myself - i'm going to end by saying the following (a quote from DickyM who's commented on the article as well):

"Windows users know they are being fleeced.

Mac users don't."

Now have a great day..i feel so much better now.
