Look, in SBS you make so many compromises to get all of the apps on the same box that sometimes you need to make another change to make sure you haven't compromised security to greatly. The .local domain falls into this category. Look at Exchange OWA setup. You wouldn't choose that setup on a stand alone box, but it makes perfect sense for a shared box. You have to look at SBS as a whole, not as a collection of stand alone parts. He doesn't, so his argument is fundamentally flawed.

Technology Wars Episode IV - A New Hope

Reading a post about the technology religion surrounding use of the .local suffix on Small Business Server...

re: Private versus Public DNS...

Have to agree with you Susan on this one and as much as I like to have a healthy debate I feel that there really is no issue.

Even large SBS installations 60 or so seats the .local does not cause any issues as you correctly point out in your post this does not limit our mail MX connectivity and the self signed certs can be still pointed to mycompany.com so there really is no issue.

The only time that split brain DNS becomes a requirement is for much larger companies or companies who must host their own external facing websites on their lan (not really a good idea).

Instead of using ..local we could of course use a delegated sub domain like ad.mycompany.com but do we really want to make our lives difficult if there is no benefit to be gained as Susan said this is SBS folks, single domain, single forest .local is spot on for 99 out of 100 cases.

Mark Mulvany MCT, MCSE, MCSE+I, CNA, INET+
