So, &amp;quot;turn off automatic updates&amp;quot; from Control Panel / Automatic Updates. THAT works!

That's what I've been doing. I've seen several client PCs that were a mess as a result of Microsoft Update. A whole bunch of services fail, with no apparent way to get them running again. Ten seconds to turn off Microsoft Update and a reboot and, bingo, everything's perfect again.&lt;/p&gt;
