I just saw the recent Apple advertisement myself. I sort of agree with the sentiment of "go buy a new one", since if it's old enough to be unsupported by the latest greatest operating system, it's probably well past its supported lifespan from the OEM as well.

Through the entire Windows XP -> Windows Vista 64b migration at my home the only device casualty we had was a really old scanner that while it had been on the "Designed for Windows XP" list, was long out of support from the manufacturer. A new scanner only cost me $150 and it had better features and 64b support. Small price to pay considering what I got.
