Stumbled across a nice web site that lists all the Quickbooks file types that you can see on a Quickbooks deployment. Today a client of ours sent a qby file back on a usb drive. We scratched out heads and went..."uh, isn't that the file we sent them that has the accountant's adjustment file?"

It was indeed just that.

Quickbooks issue NOT caused by security updates last night

Quickbooks is incorrectly attributing a failure of .net 2.0 sp1 as a "update from last night". NO it wasn't. .NET 2.0 sp1 came out a long time ago and about a month or two ago moved up into the High priority and Critical section.

But to state that "a Windows update from last night" is the cause makes it sound like it's a security update that caused this problem and it's not. It was a Service Pack for .NET 2.0 that had no reason to be installed this week during tax season. None at all.

Please folks... if you can't handle patching on your own, hire someone to manage your patching and Service Packs, especially one that impacts LOB applications have no business being installed the week before April 15th.

I hate patching .NET and do not install service packs willy nilly. Always when you see a service pack remind yourself that there is NO NEED to install this immediately. It is YOUR choice.

ProAdvisors and their clients using QuickBooks® 2008 financial software or QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 8.0. The problem does not affect all users and does not affect earlier versions of QuickBooks.

Look for These Symptoms

Dear QuickBooks ProAdvisor,

We have discovered that a Windows update issued last night may be triggering problems for some users of the above-referenced versions of QuickBooks financial software.

When the problem occurs, the QuickBooks software does not open.

Common symptons include the following:

The QuickBooks splash screen flashes, and then goes away on launch.
On launch of QuickBooks an error message says that the Web Connector has failed to initialize.

This issue is covered in the Knowledge Base item KBID 1009275. The KBID includes links to the Microsoft site for further assistance as needed.

Our response to this issue continues to develop and if we have new information to share after this Alert goes out, we will let you know at once.

Do Not Uninstall and Re-Install QuickBooks

This problem revolves around an issue with .NET. Uninstalling and re-installing QuickBooks does not address the problem and is not recommended.

Installing Quickbook 2006 on Vista

(YES I SAID QUICKBOOKS 2006 ...YOU KNOW THE UNSUPPORTED ON VISTA VERSION....ON VISTA)

Step one - always install older programs with a "Run as adminstrator" enabled. Right mouse click on setup.exe and click "run as administrator".

Click through the UAC warning.

Acknowledge that for 13 years Quickbooks didn't code securely and because we didn't care they didn't have to (bottom line just click though this warning that it's imcompatible, now they do code securely in the 2007/2008 versions)

Click on the install button.

Click next.

Agree to the EULA (like who really clicks on the "Decline" button as this point?)

Enter the product key. (Ha! Not going to show you that screen shot!

Choose the install folder - I like each year to go into separate years (untick that button that says "place service and support icons on my desktop"

Confirm the install.

Near the end of the install you'll see an error message pop up about "error 1904.Module" and how it can't write/register ZRush_ShipRush3_QB.ocx

As is stated in this post - http://quickbooksgroups.com/webx?14@@.ef3501c/24 it's merely a FedEx so you have your choice of opening up permissions for that location or just hitting ignore (I went with ignore, as I don't need the Fedex feature to work)

The install completed.

Icon is now on the desktop.

Now... there's a couple of options here. Number one if you leave everything "as is" for most CPA offices that merely "read" the data file, post a few journal entries and that's about it, it normally works just fine.

If you need to get updates normally which most do, you have to hack up a bit. Basically you do the same 'hacking' of permissions and registries that I used to do to get Quickbooks 2006 to run as non adminstrator on XP.

You'll still get the osx error, but hitting ignore let's it go on.

Now then you need to do like this http://www.threatcode.com/group_policy.htm that to open up the permissions of the folder/registry keys so that it can be updated without issue for those firms that need it.

If the annoyance of telling your clients to "ignore" the unwanted fedex module is too much...do this:

1. Update Quickbooks and wait for the error message to pop up.

2. Rename the ZRush_ShipRush3_QB.ocx file in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks to something like ZRush_ShipRush3_QB.ocx.old

3. In the same folder, copy BbfDepCalc.ocx or another .ocx file and paste it to the same folder.

4. Rename the new file you just created to ZRush_ShipRush3_QB.ocx

5. Select Retry in the error message popup. Quickbooks should finish updating afterwards.

Yes, it does one final warning that it doesn't like Vista ...but IT WORKS ON VISTA.

Have a loosened permissions on part of my file and registry structure so that if/should a malware ever specifically be designed to nail me with a Quickbooks virus (some folks would argue Quickbooks is malware to begin with, but I digress), but I have a fully functional Quickbooks 2006 on a Vista.

Is is 'officially supported"? No.

Does it work? Yes.

Because I've hacked it up it doesn't need a UAC prompt either, nor need to run as XP sp2 or with admin in the security properties. It just "runs"

Please note I do not get paid by either Microsoft or Intuit to do this 
proof of Quickbooks 2006 running on Vista.

I'm just stubborn.

What's happening is the XP sp2 firewall is mangling your software access a bit....

The other day someone on one of the lists made the statement ..the gist was "software is software" and Quickbooks has a Mac version.

Be aware there are differences in the versions between Windows and Mac:

Improved Reconciliations in QuickBooks 2008 Accountant's Copy

Another Reason to Use Accountant's Copy. When you and your clients update to R3, you will have improved reconciliation functionality in the Accountant's Copy.

With R3, either you or the client or both can reconcile their bank and credit card accounts while the Accountant's Copy is with you. The client's reconciliation of a particular account is saved and will be retained as long as you did not also reconcile the account during the period you worked on the Accountant's Copy. (If you have reconciled the same account as the client, your reconciliation will be retained when the client accepts the Accountant's Copy.)

More Changes in R3. More information on QuickBooks 2008 R3 will be posted with the Web update, which we expect on Nov. 29, 2007. Enhancements and resolutions of known issues are expected for a variety of QuickBooks functions.

Notes:

In its initial release, QuickBooks 2008 allowed a situation where clients could send an Accountant's Copy, then do a reconciliation, and discover the reconciliation was undone when the updated Accountant's Copy was imported. Individually and through various advisor groups, you told us we had to fix this so clients would not see their reconciliations disappear.
In R3, if a ProAdvisor and client should both reconcile the same account while the Accountant's Copy is out with the ProAdvisor, the ProAdvisor's reconciliation will override the client's reconciliation.
With your QuickBooks Premier Accountant Edition 2008, you are able to share an Accountant's Copy with clients in either QuickBooks 2007 or QuickBooks 2008. However, to take advantage of the revamped reconciliation ability identified in this newsletter, the ProAdvisor must have Accountant Edition 2008 R3 and the client QuickBooks 2008 R3.

Why do accounting clients need 47 versions of Quickbooks anyway?

So why do Accountants NEED 47 versions of Quickbooks back to practically 1999? Because we support clients on older versions. I was in the Quickbooks 2008 version today and opened up an 2006 accountants version that a client was on and saw this.

So if you wonder why someone needs 47 (or is it 48, I've lost track) versions of Quickbooks.. it's because our clients are running 51 different versions, we have to ensure if we work on the data, we don't upgrade it, so we have to use the version they have (which is why I use Logmein IT Reach or other remote tools to remote to workstations so that it's on an approval basis and that I'm using their database)

The solution is that most accountants do not need to share the data between accountants and thus there is no need to install the database server of Quickbooks on the server. Plunk the data file on the server in a shared/backed up file and all is good.

Right CD, Wrong Label for Enterprise Solutions

Your 2008 Members CD-Rom for Enterprise Solutions Is Mislabeled

Dear Susan Bradley,

You have just received or will be soon receiving your 2008 QuickBooks ProAdvisor Membership Package and one of the CD-ROMS is mislabeled.

The QuickBooks: Enterprise Solutions CD is incorrectly labeled as Version 7.0. The CD is actually a working version of the new Version 8.0, and comes with a current and valid Version 8.0 License number. The Enterprise Solutions CD was printed with the wrong artwork.

Corrective Action: Install the CD with Confidence

This is the right software. Please install software as you normally would. Install the software using the license number provided and confirm that you are indeed working with Version 8.0.

Note: The mislabelling does not affect the validity of your license.

OK to Update Label. For your records, you can update the label to indicate the right version. We recommend a felt-tip permament marker, such as a Sharpie® brand pen.

(Be careful not to mark the shiny unlabeled side of the CD. Marks on this side can interfere with the software being read optically.)

Hackin' up Quickbooks

I think I figured out why my Quickbooks 2006 has no issues with LUA on this formerly XP that was hacked up to run Quickbooks as non admin and now running Vista... because the registry hack ups I did are still on this system....

See those registry edits? They are still here on this system.

Then I'm running it with a XP sp2 compatibilty.... but bottom line if your version of Quickbooks won't run without admin rights in XP, you will need to determine what hacks you need to do in XP and do likewise in Vista.

Now the alternative is again, the only setting that you should consider, is to go into Vista and change the policy so that administrators silently elevate... but PLEASE do not consider shutting off UAC as an appropriate solution as that will remove IE in protected mode. Changing it so that the elevation to secure desktop occurs silently is a reasonable solution/choice in this transition era we have right now.

Shutting UAC off completely is not.

I got to thinking as to why my Quickbooks 2006 (yes 2006!) on my laptop has no issues with LUA and can launch and run just fine.

On my Vista desktop I'm running Quickbooks 2007 which is built for Vista, no UAC whatsoever. On my laptop, I can even run Quickbooks 2006 without getting any UAC prompt (and 2006 isn't really supported on Vista but mine works like a champ).

On Vista I don't even edit the compatibility to run like XP sp2.

I do have one leftover element on that Vista that used to be XP once upon a time... I hacked up the Registry to let Quickbooks run as a normal user on XP -- http://www.threatcode.com/quickbooks.htm and as soon as I fire up the laptop tomorrow, I'll confirm if that's why I can have Quickbooks (2006) run without a single UAC pop up.

Do make sure you are on the latest version of the Quickbook release as some of the early versions had some weirdness.

But it is my job to ensure that I can run systems as sure as I can, and that includes normal user mode on XP, and leaving UAC on in Vista.

How Automatic Update R8 Affects Enterprise Solutions 7.0

Now Linux Enabled. Last month we pre-announced QuickBooks 2007 Release 8, expected to be available as an Automatic Update come Thursday, July 12. The update also affects QuickBooks: Enterprise Solutions 7.0 in a big and special way: Linux capability.

QuickBooks will now connect to a company file that is being hosted on a computer using the Linux operating system. This computer will need to be running the new Linux compatible Server Only version of QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 7.0. The Linux option is only available in Enterprise Solutions.

Reports Run Faster. Key financial reports in QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 7.0 will now run 2x to 20x faster than in Enterprise Solutions 6.0. (Testing was conducted on QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 6.0 data files with 250MB to 300MB of data. Actual results may vary.)

There are many other significant updates in the release not limited to Enterprise Solutions, including tweaks to remove issues with the Accountant Copy, improve file operations, and address a number of payroll issues.

See a list of all cumulative changes included in Release 8.

Note: In a networked environment, don't forget to update all computers where QuickBooks 2007 is installed.

Manual Downloads Available as Early as June 25. Intuit expects to make QuickBooks 2007 Release 8 (R8) available on its Website for downloads by end of day on Monday, June 25. We expect that Intuit will distribute R8 as an Automatic Update a little more than two weeks later, on Wednesday, July 11.

What Changes. This is a significant update. We expect this release to address over 70 individual issues, including several enhancements to the Shipping Manager function. More information on QuickBooks 2007 R8 will be posted with the Web update at http://www.quickbooks.com/support/index/ndxw_16_update.html when the release is posted (expected on June 25).

Quickbooks database server manager - have you updated it?

If you've installed the QB 2007 database server manager on your server and it still says "R1.2445" on there? Go get it updated to R7 on the SMBTN yahoogroups today several folks didn't realize that that manager needed separate updating and the older versions tended to 'hang' the shut down of the server. On a vmware I have I have the original unupdated version... Get yourself up to R7 by installing the manual patch!

Intuit Further Clarifies Guidance on Windows Vista (When Running QuickBooks 2004 through 2006). Intuit has now done more testing and has updated information on issues related to Windows Vista.

We still recommend that you, as a QuickBooks ProAdvisor, proceed with caution when considering Windows Vista. For your clients — who may be running only one version of QuickBooks — we still believe QuickBooks 2007 is the best option if they are upgrading to Windows Vista..

However, we have found that customers can try running QuickBooks 2004 to 2006 on Windows Vista if two conditions are met initially. First, the users must be set up as a Windows Administrator. Second, they will need to run the QuickBooks software in Windows XP Compatibility Mode. Note, however, that even then, users may experience problems including heavy incidence of error messages (during installation and operation) and some feature failures.

Updated Guidance. Intuit's guidance for running QuickBooks 2004 through 2006 in Windows Vista now reads,

You must be set up as a Windows Administrator and run QuickBooks in Windows XP-Compatibility Mode in order for it to work properly on a Windows Vista computer. Even then, some of the functionality of 2006 and earlier QuickBooks software may be adversely affected… Other QuickBooks products, such as Payroll, Point of Sale, and Customer Manager, are impacted as well.

What Stays the Same: Windows Vista is still an unsupported operating system for QuickBooks 2004, 2005 and 2006. But it appears that some clients may be able to proceed in such an environment.

User Experience: Error Messages Common. When users attempt to install and use QuickBooks 2006 or earlier on Windows Vista, they will generate multiple error and warning messages. In some cases, users can ignore such error messages and proceed. In operation, areas of functionality that may be affected include QuickBooks Payroll (see note below), QuickBooks Timer, creating invoices as PDFs, and Shipping Manager. Users also are only able to attempt this environment when they run the earlier version of QuickBooks on Windows Vista as the Windows Administrator and in XP Compatibility Mode. (Note: This approach undercuts many of the new security features in Windows Vista.)

QuickBooks Payroll Services. On the Windows Vista operating system, QuickBooks Standard, Enhanced, and Assisted Payroll will only work with QuickBooks 2007 or QuickBooks Enterprise 7.0. Payroll updates will not download or work properly if you are using earlier versions of QuickBooks on Windows Vista (even if you are logged in as a Windows administrator and running in XP Compatibility Mode). As a result, Intuit will not be able to provide workarounds or support for payroll service issues.

How We Will Support QuickBooks ProAdvisors. The QuickBooks ProAdvisor Technical Support Team will work with ProAdvisors if they are attempting to install QuickBooks 2004 through 2006 on Windows Vista up to a point. That is, if the issues you as a ProAdvisor are having are among the issues we have developed support on, we want to help. You may still encounter glitches which the Support Team is unable to address.

Advice for Your QuickBooks Clients. Intuit continues to share its best information on Windows Vista in the QuickBooks Windows Vista Resource Center, and we encourage you to share this link with your clients:

Intuit will support its customers to the degree it can under existing support plans, with the understanding that users of QuickBooks 2004, 2005, or 2006, who are attempting to install their software on Windows Vista, will not be eligible for free technical support under existing plans. The key is to ensure you are on the latest "R" or release....they should have all the fixes in there... BUT there is always the issue that both me and Intuit folks found that machines from OEM manufacturers don't always have the same default rights.

Sad ...but true.... as I found my home MCE had 'everyone' full access at the root.... which is not default...

You may have heard about the upcoming release of Microsoft's new operating system, Windows Vista. Microsoft has made significant changes to how software runs on Windows Vista.

I'm sending you this important service alert because you are using a 2006 or earlier version of QuickBooks software.

Since QuickBooks 2006 and earlier versions were developed
