So what's a girl to do?

Why get into the registry and fix it.

http://www.resco.net/smartphone/explorer/default.asp Download the registry app, install the app on the phone, and edit the registry on the phone.

http://forums.msexchange.org/m_1800388186/mpage_2/tm.htm

On the Windows mobile 3 device I went into the registry of the device and added a dword key to basically tell it to merely accept the SSL cert and not do a name check on it.

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Activesync\Partners\ID for the Mobile 5 devices

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Airsync\Connection\ for the Mobile 3 devices

Under that registry, in the second below with all the other information, merely add a dword value. Then name of it will be secure and the value is 0 (zero), which look like 0x0 when it's done and on the device.

What this does is stops the device from checking the cert. The connection is still fully SSL'd and secure. I then put the SSL cert from the server on the device itself by going to the OWA web site, exporting the SSL cert from the web site, putting it via a usb sync cable to the device and installing the cert on the device itself. And then voila. It worked.

Picture is blurry as I took it from my other phone ...another still fully operational Audiovox device as well, but you can get the idea

P.S. when any geeky person says "simply browse to the registry key on a mobile device" and you wonder how do to that if the device doesn't have a built in registry editor, check out Resco's registry editor for mobile devices: http://www.resco.net/smartphone/explorer/default.asp

http://discussion.treocentral.com/showpost.php?p=1100975&postcount=90

For those using Starfield (GoDaddy) issued certs, you must install the ValiCert root certificate. To download the ValiCert root follow the first 3 steps above to get to your installed certificates. Next view the certificate for your OWA server. Click the Issuer Statement button. You should be taken to a page with all sorts of ValiCert info and options. Near the bottom of the page is a CER file in DER format. Download and copy to your WM device. Install the cert by double-tapping in File Explorer or equivalent. That’s it!

https://certificates.godaddy.com/Repository.go

The trick is to grab those legacy Valicert bundles

Specifically this one:

https://certificates.godaddy.com/repository/valicert_class2_root.cer <<<

And get that bundle on the phone

Copy it to the phone, to someplace like my documents so you can find it, then 'tap' on it to install it. Then you should be good to go.

EDIT... you also need a godaddy specific cert on the device that I exported from the root mmc. All my mobile 6's liked the Godaddy cert, the Mobile 3's I had to get the cert on the device. I've attached the two certs I used to get them to work (see the attached files)

Windows Mobile 5.0 & ActiveSync

We have a few Windows Mobile 5.0 devices appearing and need to get them hooked up to our Exchange 2003 system. We have the infrastructure already in place as we use Outlook Web Access and Outlook Mobile Accesss. We have our front-end servers load balanced and port 443 mapped through from the outside world.

Like its predecessor Windows Mobile 2003, WM 5.0 lacks a wide selection of trusted root certificates installed by default. If you’re using a non-maintream or self-issued certificate you’ll need to do a little extra configuration to get ActiveSync working over the air. With WM 2003 there was a tool to disable certificate checking but it’s not compatible with WM 5.0. Instead follow these instructions:
# In Internet Explorer go to your Outlook Web Access site and ensure your certificate is installed. To check the name of it you can double click on the padlock icon in the bottom right of the browser.
# Now in the Internet Options in IE go to the Content tab and click the Certificates button.
# Now go to the Trusted Root Certificate Authorities and find your certificate.
# Select the certificate and click on the Export button. Follow the wizard and select ‘DER Encoded Binary x.509′ when prompted.
# Choose a suitable file name and finish the wizard.
# You’ll now need to copy the exported certificate to your PocketPC device either via a memory card or by USB. Once it’s on your PPC simply tap it with the stylus and follow the prompts to install it.

With the certificate successfully installed you should be able to synchronise over the air.
This worked perfectly for me and I can now securely sync via ActiveSync over USB or OTA.

<itunes:author>bradley</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Go Daddy certs on certain phones</itunes:subtitle><itunes:keywords>Mobility</itunes:keywords>

The 750 upgrade is now in

http://www.chrisrue.com/funcave/2007/12/and-the-heavens-opened.html

All of the websites/and boards talked about ... well it works.. but don't forget to reset your phone after using it as it messes up the networking. Huh? Why is it with phones these days that the geeks consider what they do to get it to work normal?

It seems to me the cell phones have turned into the new arena of bad customer service lately. Reminds me of the time that Lily Tomlin did the Ernestine skit where she said "We're the phone company... we don't care! We don't have to!"

I as a customer of AT&T STILL waiting for the promised Windows Mobile 6 upgrade to the Treo 750, I am amazed that once again Microsoft Mobile platform is being totally slammed again by OEMs. The folks on the forums are googling for bootleg versions of Windows Mobile 6 because they have had it with the vendor saying 'soon...soon".

http://forums.cingular.com/cng/board/message?board.id=palm&thread.id=11286&view=by_date_ascending&page=20

Meanwhile we are teaching people how to go download software from untrusted locations. Way to go vendors. Lets train customers to go to bootleg sites just because they are so darn frustrated with the manner in which you are promising upgrades.

Just yesterday in fact, a fellow mvp who had a cab file that gave a Windows mobile 6 phone the ability to do RDP was asked to remove it from the file download location. The argument was that it was piracy.

Well excuse me but who is more of the pirate here? If I'm a large corporate AT&T customer, word is that the upgrade is available. If so, that makes AT&T more the pirate than their customers.

Sometimes I just don't get business. Yeah if the goal is to make the customer so frustrated that they will give up and buy the new phones, I guess that's a win for the company, but it's not a good long term win in my book. Verizon opening up the door to non Verizon phones is a start... a good start.. http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2222771,00.asp but it's one that should be sooner versus later.

It's funny isn't it that the item called "mobility" is offered by some of the least flexible vendors out there?

“Here at the Phone Company we handle eighty-four billion calls a year. Serving everyone from presidents and kings to scum of the earth. (snort) We realize that every so often you can’t get an operator, for no apparent reason your phone goes out of order [snatches plug out of switchboard], or perhaps you get charged for a call you didn’t make. We don’t care. Watch this [bangs on a switch panel like a cheap piano] just lost Peoria. (snort) You see, this phone system consists of a multibillion-dollar matrix of space-age technology that is so sophisticated, even we can’t handle it. But that’s your problem, isn’t it ? Next time you complain about your phone service, why don’t you try using two Dixie cups with a string. We don’t care. We don’t have to. (snort) We’re the Phone Company!”
– Lily Tomlin, as Ernestine

The 750 upgrade on the Palm version isn't even out yet.

Well that was easy. I literally connected the Treo 750 to "my" computer, ran through the "connect to exchange activesync" wizard, stuck the two certs (I have ISA) on the device that I have parked on my computer and voila.

The easiest way to get a cert off your system and on to a device is to go into IE and find the two certificates, both in your trusted root certificate store in IE and export them anywhere. Then put the cable with the device, go into explore .....

Once the device is attached, go into Explore and find a folder location that you can remember to find on the device.

Dump the cert files into this folder location

Now take the device and typically it's a matter of tapping enter on the cert to "install" it on the device. The 750 didn't need any hacking or unlocking or anything to get it to accept the self signed cert. Heck it didn't even mind being temporarily activesync'd to a totally different workstation.

Now to figure out if we can do Comcast email "and" hotmail email "and" Outlook Exchange all at the same time.....

To fix a phone

The SBS'ized instructions for using this tool:
http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2007/02/14/435267.aspx

Don't. Don't use that tool.
That has to be the most confusing, non GUI...what is it about Exchange people and their use of command line...that I've ever seen.

Instead here's what you do to get your Mobile 3 and 5 phones syncing properly and Outlook calendar items in the proper time.

Okay install the Windows, Exchange patches, yadda yadda... if you've been living under a rock go here, read. Install, do.
Got it?

Okay now download the TZmove.exe tool and show it to the people in your office. Let THEM move their appointments in their Outlooks so when they screw it up they are to blame not you.

Now for the phones -- the fun part.

Okay get the Mobile DST patch.
Pocket PC
Smartphone

You could probably use the desktop updating tool, but I wanted to confirm this process worked first.
Dig out that sync cable that you never use but once in a blue moon and then you forget where you stuck it, dump the cab file update on the phone under my documents. Browse to that location, click to install. Now... go to the phone settings (this is the part I forgot earlier), and change the time zone on the phone to another time zone and PRESS DONE or whatever you need to do to have the phone "take" the zone change. Now change it back to your proper time zone and press DONE again. This is the key I forgot. You need to press done to reset the timezone to another zone and then back.

Set an appointment in the Outlook on the desktop for say... March 17th at noon and place the word "Noon" in the subject line. Sync the phone. Check that the appointment on the 17th is at noon on the phone. If the phone says "noon" and the appointment is showing it's at noon, do a "IT happy dance". If not, go back and make sure you truly CHANGED the time zone and not just scrolled to it. Do the St. Patrick's Day test again (as this is a day in between when the time changes on the 11th and when in April when it normally would. Get to where you can do an "IT happy dance" on each mobile phone/device in your office.

...how many phones are out there in the universe and every single one of them needs a dst patch and a time zone change? Ouch. I cannot see anyway short of touching every phone that big server land are going to be able to have "IT happy dances", do you?

We've got direct push now...

Engadget blogs about how the Iphone must connect to Exchange to be the true business killer app. http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/14/will-the-iphone-support-exchange-direct-push/ Yup. If you don't connect to Exchange, you won't get into many businesses. Even Blackberry has a problem when there's a SBS box in the house. Why spend money on a BES box when you have nearly all the ingredients you need in house.

Sure that looks cool...but where's the keyboard for it? All I'll end up is my cheek makeup smeared all over the shiny front anyway...and what? What's this? no 3G?

I just got my 3G card for my Vista laptop and granted... I don't get 3G coverage all the time...but when I do, it's just long enough and good enough that I don't know if I would buy a phone right now, that would give not only Exchange direct push coverage but also the ability to have internet access to a laptop without 3G included. In fact during Seattle's big wind storm, some folks without power were using cell phones for ISP coverage when their cable connection was down for days.

So what ingredients do you need to have email on a phone? Step one you need to go to the carrier in your area and look for the Smart Phones for PDAs. In this case I'm using examples from Cingular as that's my company locally.. or AT&T..whatever...Now keep in mind for us gals, I prefer the smart phone size versus the PDA...but that's just me, and the Cingular 3125 will fit the bill. When you get a phone plan, look for that Smart phone data only add on, which actually was cheaper than the PDA plan (go figure). But I will admit, I don't email from my phone, I only read email and if I need to respond, I fire up the laptop. This 3125 also isn't 3G and thus couldn't double as a web connection for your laptop. I prefer to have a separate card in fact for that purpose only. My current phone the Audiovox isn't sold anymore so if I was looking for a replacement phone, this would be my choice. The key you are looking for as to compatible phones with SBS.... is merely a Mobile 5 platform. As that will hook into Exchange which is already in SBS.

So then it comes down to... do you like the PDAish style with the slide out keyboard like the Cingular 8525.... or...

Do you like the blackberry-ish style with the keyboard on the bottom like the Palm Treo 750

Or maybe you want the Samsung Blackjack. The key to look for is to ensure you are getting a Mobile 5 device.

So once you find the phone, the next step is pretty easy.. you run the CEICW wizard and set up the server for OWA/OMA if you haven't already done so and then, these days... I would probably say... you know... forget the self signed cert way... how about you just buy a third party cert and be done with it.

So ... your next shopping list item is to purchase a certificate from a Small Biz friendly partner... of which they are linked here:
https://partner.microsoft.com/global/partner/40027352 and Godaddy even has one: https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/ssl/ssl.asp?isc=microsoft

And in case you are not sure how to install that Godaddy cert on your SBS box? We have a pdf with info linked on Amy's blog -- http://isainsbs.blogspot.com/2006/10/replacing-sbs-self-signed-ssl.html

More info is in this white paper http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=678d2589-4a71-4618-b4b8-e619a4709ca1&DisplayLang=en

So .... do we have our shopping list in order now?

Phone

3G or no?

Keyboard or not?

Data plan (either one for smartphone or PDA)

Third party cert

And we have our Action plan

Install cert on SBS

Ensure OWA works

Get cert on phone

Put username/password/domain...and...

Voila...

Okay ..one last thing... add a dash of paranoia while we're at it... http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive/2007/01/11/remote-wiping-a-device-with-no-user-input.aspx

.... I'll leave the ring tone shopping to your discretion... (boy are some of them annoying aren't they?)

I just heard about a VERY VERY cool event coming across the USA... focusing smack dab on the very topic we picked for our next meeting.. Mobility.

Someone said to me at SMBnation that phones are actually selling servers... go figure ... a $200 phone drives a server purchase.. But check this out.. this is VERY cool!

“Mobilizing the Microsoft Stack,” a nationwide series launching on October 2nd. We’ll be showing some of the latest gadgets, plus have reps from Verizon, Brightpoint, and Palm at many of the sessions. For the first 40 Microsoft Partners, we’ll even have FREE Windows Mobile devices. The catch is that they have to deploy a Windows Mobile solution within 60 days of the event; details are on the invitation link. Registration is limited, so I’d encourage people to sign up today!

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" getting really tired of that error code.

Okay got the emulator set up including putting certificates on it for my server (and use the PocketPc image and not the smart phone as it's in an "unlocked" state so you can use the "shared folder" option in the emulator to then get the cert on the device. Place another person's info into the emulator and it syncs just fine. Put mine in and I get the following:

And googling only gets me...

If you are seeing error: 0x80070057 this is because (it appears) BY DEFAULT the Microsoft Exchange Server – Active Sync has no READ Permissions be sure to Enable READ permissions

Okay thanks folks but other phones DO work so it's not read permissions.... so I kicked up verbose logging on the emulator and I notice that not only is it doing an active sync with my inbox ...it's also hitting my RSS feed folder....

...and then it hits me what's doing it....

THAT STUPID RSS FEED FROM THE SITE ALLBUSINESS.COM SCREWED ME UP

Okay so a few days before SMBnation, the RSS feed for Allbusiness.com had really funky codes up in the subject line. So much so it was taking two lines on the RSS reader. I didn't think anything of it at the time. But those funky codes were what was causing activesync to fail. Once I deleted the subscription to Allbusiness.com's RSS feed, my syncing is now working.

Because that header was in my folders... I couldn't sync.....

So if anyone else has any weird sync issues... check your RSS feeds or weird emails in your inbox.... because it might just work after you delete that RSS feed/folder/email.

There are times I want to be insecure and shoot myself in the foot

Issue Description:

A driver is installed that causes stability problems with your system. I was attempting to do a non SSL connection to port 80 and 80 wasn't open to use for debugging purposes.

So when the support guy told me to delete the user account and set it back up again.... I sort of went ... uh... hmmm....that's MY account that I'd have to be setting back up again... how about I try a couple of things offline and get back to you? Bottom line, if something goes beyond what you want to rip out at this time, don't be afraid to stop the process and try more things on your own. They'll give you a phone number and an SRX to start the case up again with.

So Vlad came up with an excellent debugging suggestion... I knew that others in the office were still syncing just fine...just not mine. And in the IIS log files he couldn't see the phone hitting the server. I also knew that just today I had totally swapped phones, switching SIM cards, taking them back to fresh out of the box phones, reinstalling the cert and starting all over again and when I moved another SIM to my old phone, that ActiveSync worked just fine. But the Sync still got stuck on the 'new' phone. So we knew the issue wasn't physically connected to the device. I also tested that the phone could get out to the Internet. So Vlad said "why don't you sync to another person's mailbox that you know is syncing just fine" and still the same errors, the same messages.

We think now the phone's SIM card has gotten horked up. I have my other cingular aircard for the computer that has a chip, I may go home and try that to see if the phone still screws up.

Error messages are 0x80004005, 0x80070057

.....sigh... synchronization failed....try again later.. Yeah I think I'll pack it in for the night. I think I'll fire up an emulator at home and just make sure it is the SIM card...or at least appears to be.

..... I want my phone back .... I miss my email on my phone.... my poor little phone... sigh

P.S.
I have been struggling with this for quite some time, I have found a solution and I wonder what you think of it.

I was trying to set up Exchange active sync with over the air push. My Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox T830 absolutely refused to accept the self signed cert from my SBS 2003 server when using the documented Microsoft method. I got no help from the Fujitsu website and all the advice I could get from the Microsoft documentation suggested I should buy a third party cert. I didnt want to spend money on getting it to work so i tried an alternative. Every time you vist the server remotely over RWW it asks you to accept a certificate, which I always do, I decided to install that cert into my IE browser, export it to my local PC remotely and try installing that cert instead (for some reason the resulting cert file size is different from the documented method of extracting the cert so they are definately different). To my amazement, it worked perfectly. I have no explaination as to why it worked or how it worked, it just did. I love it.

You know..the method you described worked for me like a champ as well...

http://msmvps.com/blogs/bradley/archive/2005/07/27/59768.aspx

And even the documentation blog is asking if folks are having issues with the instructions.... I think the answer is ... Yes.

Remote device wipe on a mobile 5 device

Want to see remote device wipe in action for a Mobile device 5?
