Quite a few months ago I ran into an issue with ShadowProtect on SBS 2008. Long and the short of it is there is an issue in the Exchange vss writer that was fixed in Update Rollup 9.

This should help a lot of people with there backup woes on SBS2008.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/970162

It appears as DPM issue but Shadowprotect and other applications that use the vss writer experienced issues as well.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/968621/

Don Murphy

Backup and Restore Small Business Server 2003 using Data Protection Manager 2007

Corporate America: The Technical Side: Backup and Restore Small Business Server 2003 using Data Protection Manager 2007.:
http://ctsitguru.blogspot.com/2008/09/backup-and-restore-small-business.html

Stealing from a newsgroup pot from Andrew Alaniz --

I know this is late, but I wanted to hit up as many forums as I could with
what I have recently found regarding SBS 2003 and DPM 2007.

Please review my blog at http://ctsitguru.blogspot.com my latest entry
details performing a bare bones restore of SBS 2003 with DPM 2007. The catch
is you must have the Enterprise agent in order to use the System Restore Tool.

I too ran into the issue where the SBS is the only DC/DNS in the network and
so how do DPM then know it even exists if it fails. You must first keep
recovery points using the SRT and file level backups using DPM.

A few other quirks with SBS:

-Do not run DPM backups of the information store or SQL server while also
running SBS backups. You will run into issues with conflicts in the
transaction logs.

-DPM does not recognize WSS2.0 as SharePoint therefore you cannot use it to
perform file level backups of SharePoint.

-Make sure you have lots of disk space on the server running DPM because any
decent backup plan for SBS is going to take up a bit of space.

Can't please them all can you?

http://weblog.infoworld.com/enterprisewindows/archives/2008/09/exchange_backup.html

Show me an Enterprise customer and they probably are not using ntbackup to backup Exchange.

Show me a SBS 2008 server and there's a backup api under the hood that is included in the product because we're spoiled because our Backup wizard in 2k3 backed up Exchange as well

Show me some of the consultants and they are freaking out that Win2k8 backup can't backup to tape.

Can't please them all can you?

And if you want to backup to disk in the 2k8 era.... http://www.backupassist.com/BackupAssistV5/beta/v5Beta_Announcement.html Affordable solution right there.

Buy her a bigger purse

http://uksbsguy.com/forums/p/2096/6544.aspx

I got one question about backup... Strong beliver of tapes but now not supporting what is the poor PA meant to do now when the external HDD do not fit in her handbag.

Seriously though, apart from now having to buy 3rd party, what was Microsoft thinking about transporting backup media offsite, external HDD are very delicate if dropped."

One word. Or rather one link...

http://www.wdc.com/en/products/index.asp?Cat=9

Okay so maybe 2...

http://www.amazon.com/CaseLogic-Small-External-Drive-Case/dp/B000HDJT4S/ref=pd_bxgy_e_text_b

If a gal can't fit THAT into her purse... buy her a bigger one.

Native tape is dead in 2k8. Folks, either deal with it, plan on backupassist and get over it. It is what it is and no amount of "tape is better" arguing will change this. I have never "dropped a drive" enough to lose data.

If you ask your clients, ask them if they even like rotating tapes at all and if the answer is no, check out www.efolder.net as well.

A few years ago we NEVER thought the native backup was good enough...so it's funny how things change.

P.S.... the backup support only for harddrives is a Windows Server 2008 requirement. This isn't unique to SBS.

About that cloud....

Some online backup services insecure - heise online UK:
http://www.heise-online.co.uk/news/Some-online-backup-services-insecure--/110771

To ensure that you can not only encrypt your data but get it back I had to laugh at their listing of questions you can set for reset/get back your narly encryption password. You can make it as paranoid as you want it to be and still get your data back.

But there was one question that I just had to laugh about.....

That one. Why? Because my "accounting background" showed up. My very first thought for what that question meant was my favorite debit or credit entry explanation or something.

In accounting we do general journal entries and that was my first thought was "Okay like debit to Cash ....." until I went...duh.... you idiot.

For those in the partner space you can 'brand' it as your backup. Don't ask me the prices as they are channel only, ask Jan all about it. Her email address is jspring@efolder.net

Jim, in addition to doing flat file storage, is using StorageCraft and then parking the StorageCraft image on Efolder. Kewl huh!

Making an image

A couple of people pinged and asked if I could have done a StorageCraft backup instead of the EnCase one I did for the examination of the laptop. Honestly it would have been easier. EnCase is sometimes a bear to get it to make a true boot image of the acquired drive. The issue is not really whether Storagecraft could have done a better job (it could), an easier job (way easier), but rather more of a standard in the Industry. If I know that an examination will not be used for court reasons, StorageCraft is actually my preferred imaging tool (remember of course that the ITPro version is the one that works with a bootable iso and thus doesn't touch the drive/make any inpact to the date stamps). EnCase along with Paraben are two of the heavy hitters in litigation. If you go into court you merely say "I acquired it using EnCase" and there's not a lengthly voir dire (that's Attorney speak for "we question the heck out of it to see if we can poke holes") of the tools used in the process.

EnCase takes a hash of the drive, has "EnCase scripts" to examine for certain information (emails, sensitive data, queries, etc). It's more of a situation that if I'm doing a 'casual' investigation, I'll do StorageCraft to a vmware/vpc. If a courtcase, it's the full blown EnCase.

The key is the right tool for the right situation. You must have a block image/doesn't touch the data imaging program that ensures that the original data is not written to during the acquisition process.

And that's the key, select the right tool for the job.

StorageCraft and VMware/VPC

When in Virtual PC or VMWare and restoring a StorageCraft image you have to think of where you are at.

First off.. you need to share out the location of where the image is at. Then you boot the StorageCraft ISO into the virtual PC or VMware. Choose option one that uses the vistaPE boot sequence. Then, inside StorageCraft, you assign an IP address in the range of the IP address of the machine that holds the image. In my case my box was at 192.168.000.002 and I gave the IP of the StorageCraft 192.168.000.050.

Then I mapped a drive letter. In my case as I'm restoring this on a machine that is a workgroup the syntax is \\Machinename\Sharedfolder and entered the username and password.

So now I ensured that a partitioned out in the Virtual PC a larger space then my backup ..and I began the restore process. The first thing it wanted me to do was to partition the drive I had set up and then it wanted to reboot the image. But when it rebooted it just sat there with a blinking curser.. AH I forgot to go into the boot sequence of the VPC/VMware and make it boot from the cdrom (or in this case ISO) of the StorageCraft first.

Once it did that I started the restore wizard again....

But this is definitely something you want to practice and document the process. When something blows up is not the time to be fumbling around trying to figure this stuff out.

But when it works... and you now have a virtualized copy of the exact desktop at the office (yes it's retail not OEM in case the licensing folks are reading) of XP that you can put under Vista just in case you need it, it's priceless.

Catalog a backup file

From the mailbox tonight ...which is kinda fitting since I'm using a backup for my lost SYSVOL issue...

Sometimes there's a backup you need that just isn't listed in your tape (or hard drive) catalog.

Click on Restore, and then on Tools and see that "Catalog a backup file" there... click that to have the restore program read the backup file and build a new catalog for you.

Getdataback to Get Data Back

Bob Nitrio pinged me the other night that I paved over my ISO repository in my zeal to test out Bitlocker and at the time I was running Longhorn. He suggested GetDataBack from http://www.runtime.org/ to get my ISO's back.

As you can see in the image below it was indeed going to be able to do just that. All I had done was to repartition and reformat. That doesn't destroy data at all as you can see.

When you do an Oh #%@# the best thing you can do is to stop and ensure that you do no more damage to a disk. As you can see it was easily able to see everything and would have gotten that drive back in about 2 and 1/2 hours. I ended up deciding to not worry about it as I've already received all of the media in the mail to replace it and there were old betas on that drive that I didn't want or need back and it was just faster to use the MagicISO program to rip ISO's from the dvd's I've received.

But. Let this be a lesson.. IF I had wanted to get it back, disk recovery utilities would have done exactly that. The key is to not write data OVER THE TOP. Formatting, no prob. Reparitioning over the top ... no prob. Writing over the top of data... and we start to have a big problem and possibly lose or damage data. But the next time you do a big wince.. a REALLY big wince.... stop. You may be able to get that data back.

Either have a backup ..or don't care

I just winced just a little bit.. in my testing of bitlocker on my beta test box I just accidentally paved over the drive on that server that stored all the downloaded ISO's from the beta site. Fortunately, while I can do a little wince at the time it will take me to pull them down again from TechNet and the beta's I'm in, it's not a huge loss (mainly because I'm in the unlimited bandwidth USA mind you).

But I didn't have a backup of that drive I paved over. Fortunately I can replace it... but the fact is that I had no backup and thus lost the data.

http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/library/cbc28269-5146-4672-9161-8872697897061033.mspx?mfr=true

So what things will you wince over? And do you have a backup?

I may have blown off all those ISOs... but I got Bitlocker to work... so for that it was worth it! ;-)

A shrinking backup window

Chris reminded me while we were in AU of the adjustment he made to the backup program in SBS....
Here’s my blog article on modifying bkprunner.exe to use /FU to restore SBS performance when backing up to file:http://chrisara.blogspot.com/2007/09/modifying-sbs-2003-sp1s-bkprunnerexe.htmlThe reason for /FU is documented here:

While it's admirable that he's offering beer for a return of his laptop that has the business financials and the logos, the reality is that for any business, one shouldn't get into this situation in the first place. With online backups, Windows home server, even a spare harddrive, there's no excuse these days NOT to have a backup of key critical information.

Here's hoping he gets the laptop back. Backup Cancelled.

If for the last few days the speed of the blog totally sucked...that was why. I was testing out an online backup solution.

And while it may make sense for incremental files, and normal workloads, If you are attempting to pull over a 5 gig clump
of a backup of a SQL database it makes no sense at all. It was taking DAYS to backup that clump. Obviously one needs
to do a SQL aware backup or something, but even still, while flat "normal" file backups may make sense online, not sure if
every file backup does.

One locally attached USB later and we have what was taking DAYS to backup, now backed up in minutes

VSS hotfixes

On the topic of VSS hotfixes, Chris was saying that the optimal VSS hotfixes are now:

A new Volume Shadow Copy Service update is now available that fixes various Volume Shadow Copy Service problems in Windows Server 2003:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/913648/en-us
Availability of a Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) hotfix rollup package for Windows Server 2003 to resolve some VSS snapshot issues:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940349/en-us
are needed for the server

and
An update is available to optimize the way that the Shadow Copy Client accesses shadow copies in Windows Server 2003 and in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903234/en-us
is needed for the workstation

But if you have SP2 installed, you have KB913648 already installed.

And don't forget you can request that hotifx via email... To resolve this problem, submit a request to Microsoft Online Customer Services to obtain the hotfix. New features in ShadowProtect include tools that help administrators get systems up and running in minutes.

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=166840

http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs/browse_frm/thread/bd1e795a6906b17d/3bdd7b5148b90732?lnk=st&q=&rnum=3&hl=en#3bdd7b5148b90732

(sign) I have to reregister those dlls' again? Hmmm.. it seemed to fail the night before last but worked okay last night (this is the home server)... so I think I'll just keep an eye on it...but remember Mark Crall's sage words... you have a hardware failure RIGHT after the backups fail....otherwise the info is as follows:

1. Open a command prompt and change directories to \windows\system32 (this
is important when you begin registering the dlls).

2. Run the following command to stop the service:
net stop vss

3. Then register the following dlls and services (be sure you're still in
the windows\system32 directory at your command prompt):

regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
Vssvc /Register
regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 es.dll
regsvr32 stdprov.dll
regsvr32 vssui.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 msxml4.dll

II.According to the error message, the issue maybe related to COM+, please
refer to the following steps to reinstall COM+:

Reinstall COM+

1. Backup and then delete HKLM\Software\Microsoft\COM3
2. Boot to Recovery console and rename clbcatq.dll to ~clbcatq.dll. Be
sure to use the tilde.
3. Boot to normal mode and in Control Panel, open the Add or Remove
Programs tool, and then open the Add/Remove Windows Components tool. Do not
make any changes, just click "Next". This reinstalls COM+.

After that, please run the following commands on the server to re-register
the services and binaries again:

Cd windows\system32

Net stop vss
Net stop swprv

regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
Vssvc /Register
regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 es.dll
regsvr32 stdprov.dll
regsvr32 vssui.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
