Update Rollup 1 for Windows Server 2012 Essentials is available:

You cannot enable the Windows Server Update Services role in Windows 
Server 2012 Essentials:

(or rather, now you can with this hotfix installed)

Hmmm, whilst it allows you to install WSUS on WS2012E, it doesn't create the necessary GPOs as per SBS - or am I doing something wrong?

I didn't say it installed the "SBS " version of WSUS.  It lets you install WSUS.  Period.  We have to do the rest manually.

I know that. The point I was making is that for an SBS replacement product you would think it would install the GPOs as well, especially seeing as there is are "SBS Group Policy Folder Redirection" and "SBS Group Policy Security Templates" GPOs already in WS2012E.
