Deployment status report as of October 4, 2012

In our partner meeting last night we talked about how hard it is to remember what is and is not released, what is an is not easy to get, what can run on top of what.

So you tell me... can you easily buy Windows 2012 standard right now?

Server 2012 standard and foundation is up in Action pack/Technet.

Status report on other solutions:

Multipoint 2012 not released
Windows 2012 server Essentials not released

Exchange 2010 cannot run on Windows 2012 server until SP3 - eta of first 1/2 of 2013 - http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2012/09/25/announcing-exchange-2010-service-pack-3.aspx
Exchange 2013 will run on Windows 2012 but it's in beta
Deployment reality as of 10/2012:  At this time if you want on premise Exchange you are looking at Exchange 2010+Windows 2008 r2

Public folder support is coming to Office 365 in the Exchange 2013ish wave - eta unknown

SharePoint 2010 will not run on Windows 2012 - no anticipated fix for this (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2724471/en-us?sd=rss&spid=16526)
SharePoint 2013 will run on Windows 2012 but it's in beta
Deployment reality as of 10/2012:  At this time SharePoint 2010 foundation on Windows 2008 r2 or Office 365's SharePoint in the E plans are your best bet for deployment.

WSUS as a role is part of Server 2012
WSUS as a server role will be supported on Essentials
Deployment reality as of 10/2012:  WSUS is supported, also consider solutions offered by your RMM packages or Windows intune.

Still can purchase SBS 2011 standard with Premium add on.   Cannot purchase it with SA.  Cannot get SBS 2011 Standard with or without Premium add on from Techsoup (http://forums.techsoup.org/cs/community/b/tsblog/archive/2012/09/04/microsoft-retires-small-business-server.aspx)

Any other status reports of stuff that will run on stuff that you guys need me to track down?

I plan to blog this and reporting updates as the stuff rolls out.

A Server 2012 Standard license allows you to "downgrade" to a lower or older version, so you can already build an on-premise Exchange solution with:

- Host: Server 2012 with Hyper-V

- Guest: Server 2012 as DC

- Guest: Server 2008 R2 + Exchange 2010 + SharePoint 2010

It's not ideal to have Exchange and SharePoint (and potentially SQL) inside the same VM, but it's a start until we get Essentials as the DC.

Or just get another Standard license from TechSoup - they're cheap enough.

Now, if there was only a decent Remote Access solution until Essentials comes out...
