Seeing issues with svchost spiking the cpu on SBS 2008 servers?

At an Exchange powershell command window (open up the Exchange shell with a runas admin) type in Disable-antispamupdates  and say Yes to disable antispam updates for now.

Then go into services, stop Windows Update service and restart it.  You'll see the svchost spike problem go away.

When the issue resolves, I'll tell you to flip them back on.  If you temp disable them now, you won't spike the cpu on the box.

The issue has been resolved.  If you disabled antispam updates, turn them back on.

So during migrations some people are installing the ntbackup code on their SBS 2011 boxes.  This allows you to restore data from your SBS 2003.  <Unconfirmed at this time> It appears that on some hardware configurations or setups if you leave this ntbackup code in the server and then attempt to do a bare metal install, you'll end up with a blinking cursor on a black screen.

The moral of this story is, when you complete the process of migration, uninstall KB974674.

Visual Studio Journey: Reinstalling the .NET Framework on a WebServer: No Picnic:
http://vstudiojourney.blogspot.com/2011/11/reinstalling-net-framework-on-webserver.html

I wouldn't use SBS 2003 as a web server.

I wouldn't install .net 4

But in case you need to rip out .net and reinstall it because updates get stuck, that is the order that the updates need to go in.

I was building a test SBS 2011 box today and thought... I thought update rollup 5 was the latest on MU/WSUS and sure enough just confirmed through my WSUS alert email that this came out today on MU/WSUS.

Update Rollup 6 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1 (KB2608646)
This update rollup resolves problems that were found in Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) since Exchange Server 2010 SP1 was released and replaces previously released update rollups for Exchange Server 2010 SP1.

It took a while to install....

Test and roll out accordingly.

If you use Exchange defender and are experiencing a delay on sending emails to yahoo recepients, here's the workaround:

Go into Exchange, then into Organization configuration, then to Hub transport.  Once there, put in a send connnector.  Click on New Send connector, and on the first tab

Then in the second tab make sure it will only respond to SMTP addresses to yahoo.com

Then on tab three ensure it just uses dns

And on the last tab your default server will be listed as the default-first-site-name.

Kicking the Tires on Windows 8 Server:
http://www.serverwatch.com/server-reviews/kicking-the-tires-on-windows-8-server.html

The user interface for server manager is built on top of Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and has been treated to a well-thought-out redesign. Some of the words used to describe the design themes include making information "glanceable" and "actionable." For example, when you choose a particular function in the left-hand tree view, it collapses to provide more screen real estate for other task-specific information. When you hover over the "Tasks" label, you'll see a pop-up drop-down list of context-specific available options.

I think I've been using the wrong beta.  He calls the metro on a server as well thought out and glanceable and actionable.  I'm in search of the classic menu.  Now one can argue that Microsoft thinks that we're all going to be managing servers using a System Center console and command line, but when you manage Server 2003 to 2008 to 2008R2 to the upcoming Windows 8, not all of those support the same level of PowerShell and consoles.

Bottom line, I'm not convinced Metro on a server is a good idea.  Time will tell if they change their mind on this and allow a classic view.

From the mailbag tonight comes the question "have you come across a system that has randomly stopped emailing the nightly network reports? Mine has stopped and I can’t work out why, they are still set up correctly and I can manually generate them"

And I've seen this before but I always have a hard time finding this old post, so I'm going to reblog it for future bingling.

Bing/Google terms:

sbs diva sbs 2011 monitoring email not sending

For monitoring email cannot be sent issue.
------------------------------------------------
Most of this issue is caused by incorrect configuration on Exchange receive connectors. You can all Exchange Receive connectors and run fix my network wizard to fix SBS specific ones. However, for Default <servername> connector, FNCW cannot create it, you need to manually create by steps in the article below:

Fix My Network wizard (FNCW) Fails to Fix the Exchange SMTP Connectors in SBS 2008
http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive/2008/09/29/fix-my-network-wizard-fncw-fails-to-fix-the-exchange-smtp-connectors-in-sbs-2008.aspx

If this doesn't work, we could investigate this issue by reviewing the following log "C:\Program Files\Windows Small Business Server\Logs\MonitoringServiceLogs" folder, there will be a file called DataServiceComponents.log, this file usually is very huge, this is because it contains almost every detailed error file in it. However, it is incredibly useful, you will be able to find the exact error. Here is an example which shows why reporting email failed to send.

[364] 091128.120849.1072: AdminTME: Status: TaskId = TaskGenerateMonitoringReport, RootTaskId = TaskGenerateAndEmailReport, Success: True, Warning: False, Continue: True, Message:

The key aspect of the exception is this:
No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it fe80::309c:a749:6920:e429%10:25

(In this case, the IP address is an IPv6 address which is not correct, it should be an IPv4 address for SBS 2008, we solved the issue by removing IPv6 address in host files.)

[TIP]: If you have any tough issue about monitoring, go to C:\Program Files\Windows Small Business Server\Logs\MonitoringServiceLogs\DataServiceComponents.log

Bottom line look in that log file, it should give you a hint to what's going on.

While reviewing the requirements for Office 365, I saw this:

Note regarding Office Professional Plus in Office 365: Office Professional Plus is not designed to install on servers or virtualized platforms. Microsoft does not provide technical support services for customer and Partner issues related to the installation or use of Office 365 in a virtual environment, Windows Server Remote Desktop, or other terminal service platforms.

Does this mean if there is a small business that has moved to a Hyper-V server with several Windows 7 Virtual Machines, that they cannot run Office 365 ? If so, that would be crazy! Key word above "Virtualized Platforms". Can you be more specific?

Or is this just talking about Terminal Services platforms where multiple users would use the same copy of Office 2010 Pro plus at the same time ?

========

Answer:

From your problem description, I understand that you learnt that Office Professional Plus cannot be installed virtualized platforms. You would like to know whether it is okay to install it on Hypver-V guest machines running Windows 7. If my understanding is not correct, please feel free to let me know.

I am sorry that this is not a supported deployment because it has not been fully tested. Therefore, there can be some unknown/unexpected issues when using this kind of deployment.

===============

My take:  It's office folks.  If Office can't handle a virtualized desktop Office needs to get on the virtualization and bandwagon.  I'll buy that for Multipoint or TS deployments you'll need Office via VL to get a license that can be installed on a terminal server... but for virtual desktops?  Come on Microsoft, buy into that cloud you keep pushing.

We're going to play a game.  See if there is any combination of answers you can give on the server selecter side whether this web site that will come up with either SBS Essentials or SBS Standard as a recommended solution.

http://www.serverbenefits.com/

Go ahead and try.  Report back what you get.

So far I keep getting Windows Server foundation, 2k8 r2 standard or enterprise, and System center essentials.  Nothing in the SBS family.  I can get SBS in the server experience side, but not on the server selector side.

So ... can you?
