So what do I monitor my HyperV with?

So what do I monitor my HyperV with?

Depends on how big you are.  I'm little.  I'm a standalone firm.  My hyperV is not domain joined.  So I don't use SCVMMwhatever thingy private cloud tool just doesn't fit.  So what does?

I still recommend that on smaller HyperV deployments you use the full Win2k8 r2 gui.  If that server needs remoting-into in the heat of the moment command line is going to be stressful.  Yes that means another Win2k8r2 license, but again I think it builds in flexibility.

So whatever normal remote management tools you use now to monitor servers (www.eventsentry.com is one, GFIHounddog. another example, Kasaya, etc,) use that to monitor the parent.

No it's not. You can use the RSAT on a workstation.

Assuming there's a workstation you can remote into though.  I still say for the beginner HyperV-er, stick with the GUI.

Well yeah, but I'm just saying use the GUI from the RSAT which is just the GUI separated from the server. It comes out the same as far as managing the server goes. At least locally. And you gain the benefit of less resources used by the OS on the server.

Currently setting up my own platform using Hyper-V Server 2008 R2... I was just planning on using RSAT from my Win7 workstation.  The added cost of a Win2k8 license also means I can't do host clustering and live migration.  I don't find the command line that bad for the limited amount of parent stuff that needs to be done.
