So when do you do updates?

So now that the data is over on the new server, the Exchange is migrated, we have a GOOD backup.. now and ONLY now do I start the patching process.

You can pick another time in the process that you feel comfy but please always do it AFTER a backup.

But my rule is to NEVER EVER do updates during the intial install of the server.  Ever.

Really ? Hmmmm

I would think that the best time would be right after the initial OS load and just after you have installed all of the latest drivers and set all the proper hardware settings. This would ensure that the OS had all of the bug fixes available installed plus security fixes. Then if something goes wrong the only time that you have lost is the time it took to load the OS. Of course you could still make a backup right after the initial OS load which would not be a bad idea anyway. Actually I would think that your build/migrate plan would have preset backup points in it.

At this moment there's no 'bug fixes' in the updates that are offered.  Given that I have tested the migration fully without any updates I know that this is a known build and everything works.
