Check that out.  And believe it or not it works better on Chrome than on IE.

The device or resource (speedtest.microsoftonline.com) is not set up to accept connections on port "The World Wide Web service (HTTP)".

Now that it's up and running the stats look... interesting...

~230ms average round trip. Fair enough, it takes about 170ms to get from Sydney to Los Angeles via submarine fibre.

Interestingly it takes ~65ms to get from the Microsoft Online Services datacentre out of the ntwk.msn.net network at LA, so I'm assuming that the datacentre is on the East Coast. Hmm, Baltimore maybe?

Slightly quicker if I use speedtest.apac.microsoftonline.com - ~150ms. That's because it ends up going Sydney-Japan-Singapore.

If Microsoft want Australians to move to the cloud, then they're just going to have to drop in a DC or two in Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane. We've already got enough backhaul contention within our dominant telco (or ridiculous packet paths due to bizarre peering agreements) without the added latency of going to an offshore DC.

There's also speedtest.emea.microsoftonline.com for our Europe/Middle East/Africa friends too. Finally, there's the Microsoft Online Services Diagnostics and Logging (MOSDAL) support toolkit found at support.microsoft.com/.../960625
