Need Thanksgiving help this week?

If you are the one cooking for Thanksgiving this week, you may want the CHOW app.

If you need help cooking and putting together the ingredient list for the week, it's a helpful reminder of what you need.  Of course you could be even geekier and just order everything done for you http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/shop/.

Thanksgiving may be also when you do your annual "clean up the family computers".

So be armed with

www.malwarebytes.org (and remember to rename it as the bad guys like to block it working with it's normal setup name)

combofix http://www.combofix.org/

An external USB drive holder, one that can handle 3.5 as well as 2.5 inch drives.  You may want to make sure you have sata to ide and ide back to sata depending on what you need to attach to what http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=sata+to+ide

A usb external hard drive to copy stuff over should you decide (and should they HAVE media to reinstall).  Sometimes the BEST way to clean is to a. strongly consider nuking (1), but at least I'd strongly recommend that you remove the hard drive and scan it while it's in an external location.  So pack a small screwdriver in your Thanksigving travel to the family box this week.  You'll probably end up needing it.

(1) Given the root kits we're getting lately, short of watching the external traffic on a system, can you really and truly be assured you've cleaned the system?

If you have any family members that work for the TSA, you could have do the first part of Step 5 above. They have had plenty of practice patting and rubbing over the past several weeks. :-0
