A special build of Exchange
"From what I have read on the net: even though sbs has "exchange" its not the same exchange that you get if you were to buy exchange from msft. Because of all the hooks and stuff that sbs has to use in order for it to be able to be easily managed and interact with the SBS API."
I love these statements. How do people get it in their heads that somehow Microsoft takes the time and energy to build a unique Exchange just for SMBs? Mind you with the next version of Exchange 2010 needing practically a server farm to run it, it might be nice for a unique version of Exchange to be built to cater to SMBs but I think the MS folks think that version is called BPOS. :-)
For the record the stuff inside SBS is the same code. The only thing unique is the stuff put in there for licensing enforcement (must have all the FSMO roles on SBS). But there's no special build for the hooks and stuff.
