Exchange 2007 sp2 on SBS 2008

When you install Exchange sp2 on a SBS 2008 any issues you hit will not be because of SBS or unique to the SBS tool but stuff you would hit regardless of the installation and are pure Exchange issues.

For example... one that Nick Whittome hit during his testing was an error that he got while installing SP2:

"Setup previously failed while performing the action "Install". You cannot resume setup by performing the action "BuildToBuildUpgrade".

As you can see this is an issue that "normal" Exchange has seen.  So if you hit issues, it's not unique to SBS and you may need to google on the exact error message you get.  Plan on about an hour for the download of the SP2 package (at least on my DSL speed) and about an hour to install SP2 on a box... and as I said before TAKE A BACKUP.  Go into the Backup console and kick a special one.

I just discovered you have to disable any & all other security software, don't let the so called tool do just the Forefront check (eg disable all of Trend Worry Free Advanced). And when the installer fails first time round, it breaks everything else - leaves many services disabled etc etc. Stellar performance MicroSloth!  

I think SBS2k8 is a VAST retrograde step. No compelling new features. Harder to manage. Poor console - eg lack of access to many management features via SBS console. Stupid backup that does not work in the real world. Can't disable warnings for backup if using a better (non MS) backup.

Frankly, it would be easier just to install native Win2k8, Exchange & SQL Server. Only advantage now with SBS is the licensing.

Can't get business folk to do ANYTHING with SBS management anymore - it is just too risky with the dodgy tools & complexity of native consoles for Exchange & ADU&G.

Loved SBS2k3, but this will be my last SBS install. MS have really lost the plot. Change for change sake. Rushing product to market. Looking at alternatives - maybe IBM/Lotus, or maybe Apple. Sad.

It is all moving to the cloud anyway. I'll give on premises solutions like this another 5 years at most. Next refresh will probably be Google I guess.
